OU Spring Game=Not all that impressed

But they still kicked our ass. Until we prove we're the tougher, better, more physical team I won't be trying to put them down.

Yep. Plus this guy wasn't being inflammatory at all. Respectful and seemed to know what he's talking about. Post more often sooner.

Not sold on Reynolds or Stills after their game against your defense last year is head scratching.

I'd like to have a nickle for every time a Horn said OU lost its defense when Mike Stoops left. Well he is back coaching the secondary with 4 starters returning. Two of them picked off Ash last year. Same matchups this year.

Wort's knee was two years ago. He is fine. Wort and Corey Nelson are very good at LB. OU brings more experience to LB than Texas.

Our offense is always good. It will be again this year. Your offense isn't good. You won't get by on a physical run game. We have 4 SRs starting on the DL and veteran LBs and DBs, and with your shaky QB, we will crowd the box and stuff the run again.

I don't think your DL vs OUs OL is the key to the game. You won't get to Jones any more than last year.

The key to the game is Ash vs the OU defense.

Didnt see anywhere that said OU lost its defense, but they did lose by far their best pass rusher, both the Lewis boys, and while true OU returns 4 starting DBs, they are nothing to brag about. I'll take Diggs, Byndom and Vaccaro everyday. Even if our other safety had more experience, I'd still take Tony Jefferson as he is a baller plain and simple. Those 4 have a good shot at taking the All-Conference spots, possibly a couple All-Americans.
Yes OU has a little more experience at LB, but Steve Edmond is already better than Wort even before his knee exploded. Nelson is good but doesnt have alot more experience than Demarco Cobbs. Edge to Cobbs if he can stay healthy. Healthy he has the playmaking ability that T. Jefferson shows for OU. Beyond the 2 LBs you named, no one with significant PT is left. Jordan Hicks is coming on as a Junior and from all reports seems to be finally letting his work ethic and drive match his potential. I think he does a great job picking up the slack for Acho being gone
The OU receivers did have great numbers against us at Dallas last year, but that was with Broyles still playing. Stills, Reynolds, Metoyer and all the Freshman WRs coming in make up a good unit, but I think a UT secondary plus a year experience in Bennie's weight program and a year older, minus the secondary's 4-year traffic cone Blake Gideon and I think this is a push at best.
Lest we forget that if Ash doesnt go color blind and give OU 21 points and kill 3 drives single-handedly, OU has 34 points and UT has 3 more possessions.
Bottom line, I think the lines for both teams, both UT OL vs OU DL, and UT DL vs. OU OL will decide this game. UT getting pressure on Jones without his Broyles security blanket will be huge, and UT's OL giving Ash more than 1 and a half steps before he is being hit by defensive linemen will go a long way toward UT having a successful offensive showing during RRR '12

With a new DC and 12 veteran defenders returning, it's a little early to call OUs defense suspect. On the other hand, the word suspect may be accurate considering the new DC.

I know I can't wait to see if our defense improves under Stoops.

With all their returning experience, OU should have a great pass offense and a solid run defense. OU's ability to run the ball when it had to was pretty lame last season, and it's rare that an OL in a pass-heavy offense transforms into great run blockers. OU's pass defense ranked 79th in D-1 last year, so it won't be hard to show improvement, the question is how much.

UT's defense was pitching a winnable game last year until offensive miscues undermined the effort. This year, that defense should be improved. UT's rushing offense should be solid, but it's pass offense is a work in progress. It remains to be seen how far Texas's pass offense has progressed, but it's doubtful they'll donate 5 TOs and 7 sacks again.

In the absence of easy scores, this should be a tight game. Kicking and field position will be huge, and defensive depth could be a factor in the 4th Q.

Being sold on Reynolds and Stills after watching your passing game disintegrate once Broyles was injured is a head scratcher as well. They effectively disappeared, and the OU passing game with pre-season Heisman candidate Jones managed one whole TD pass and 6 picks in the last 4 games of the season. I'm sure you guys will be fine, though.

    Is this true???

If so, Deep Red and Bruthaman have been hiding out on this one! Wow.

Now LJ is going to face the first non-gideon Longhorn secondary of his career. He will not lead his offense to more than 20 points vs. us.

I'm starting to think this could be fun.

I'm glad DR has seen the light on our next game: Ash and turnovers will be the difference one way or the other.

Are you talking about the OU game? Were we watching the same game? Yes, our defense played better than our O, but both got absolutely worked. After the 1st quarter, OU did what they wanted with us.

I beg to differ, our defense never got of the field because we didn't have a first down until almost the middle of the second quarter, couple that with turnovers and they had short field all day and even the best defense can't do anything about that.

  • IMO the biggest difference this season v. last against ou will be the Texas pass rush. Jones was not pressured last year and he torched the young secondary. This year should be a different story.

This game should hinge on the battles up front. Can Texas make Jones uncomfortable and can they protect Ash long enough to make a few plays...that's the game right there IMO.

I just don't understand how people can still be saying this. The 2009 Texas team was not as talented as the 2009 blowU team, but Texas won because Texas punched them in the effin mouth until Stoops panicked and his team quit. The absolutely putrid 2010 Texas team stayed within a touchdown the whole game.

Last year sucked, but you're ignoring recent history if you think Texas hasn't figured out how to out-physical blowU in the last five years.

Yes, it's true. Jones had two games over the last four in which he had a passer rating under 92 with a completion percentage between 50-55%. Don't worry, they'll blame the wind, even though Weeden's numbers were better and freshman Jared Barnett had similar numbers to Jones in the Iowa State game.

Yes it's well known that our offense sputtered after losing Whaley and Broyles. However, during that time we discovered the value of Blake Bell running a Tebow power set that started out near the goal line, but then progressed to anywhere on the field when short yardage pickups were needed. LJs TDs went way down and BBs went way up.

Yes Jones lost his security blanket, but lots of top teams lose key players. You guys lost Fozzy and it hurt. I doubt you look at the upcoming season and still feel his absence will hinder your production. Jones will have had bowl practices, spring, summer, and August to find a new security blanket. He is a veteran surrounded by veterans so naturally they will put a stout offense on the field.

He wouldn't put anyone in the conference ahead of Hurst, Colvin, and Jefferson. We have a new DB coach. Remember what it was like at your Spring game with new coaches last year?

I'm comfortable putting money on our DB this season.

Only he said it in a press conference.

Also, Nelson lost his starting job for the game to iboyle sp?, because he isn't "consistent"

I like Vaccaro, but Stoops wouldn't put him ahead of Jefferson. Without bothering to look up stats, I'd say that Jefferson has shown more playmaking ability the past two years with interceptions, sacks, TDs, FFs, and TFLs.

With Colvin and Hurst vs Byndom and Diggs, I guess we can compare post season accolades and draft status. I can't say for sure how the 4 will rank, but I will say its silly to say that Bob Stoops prefers who you have to who we have. Really silly, our 3 guys are 2-0 against yours and you say with confidence that he prefers yours including Turner and Phillips? Come on.

Trust me, Nelson will be our starting WLB and be a tackling machine. Ibiloye will be situational at SLB. Mike Stoops will prefer more Nickle and pull JI for a 5th DB.

Of course this all depends on a lot of potential factors between now and September.
