OU Spring Game=Not all that impressed

  • Their run game looked okay but it seemed more like a product of their defense sucking, they reached the endzone twice but apparently kicked like 5 FG's, Bell throw two dropped picks that aren't on the video, the one long TD pass they had looked like they kinda just chucked it up and Vacarro, Diggs, Byndom, Phillips, etc would've at least swatted it but probably picked it.
It could be the hate for OU but their defense missed tackles and their offense seemed to just kinda chip until they got inside the 20's where they stalled out. Overall not impressive
    Thoughts?

  • Run game will be there for OU...very solid

Not sold on the WR group past Metoyer...just not consistent...this year will show how much L Jones relied on Broyles...right now, Texas DB group has a significant adv over OU WR group...OU needs WR Reynolds to learn how to catch with his hands & not his face-mask

LB group is borderline pathetic...best returning LB is T Wort & he's coming off a torn knee...if Brian Harsin cannot utilize McFarland/Grant/Terrell against this LB group, then he's not the OC I think he is

OU OL/DL will be solid & both have depth

DB group is over-rated...I know there's gonna OU posters that come over to debate this point, but truth hurts...DB's try to make plays simply on athletic ability & not playing smart...they will get beat over the top, time & time & time & time & time again...this OU DB group reminds me of 2008 (45-35) & the repeated stupid plays that DB group tried to make, & failed

Right now, I'm convinced the winner between Texas DL vs OU OL will be the greatest factor in the outcome...can both T's take care of JJ & Okafor? Can the OU interior take care of the 4-man DT rotation from Texas?

Not sold on Reynolds or Stills after their game against your defense last year is head scratching.

I'd like to have a nickle for every time a Horn said OU lost its defense when Mike Stoops left. Well he is back coaching the secondary with 4 starters returning. Two of them picked off Ash last year. Same matchups this year.

Wort's knee was two years ago. He is fine. Wort and Corey Nelson are very good at LB. OU brings more experience to LB than Texas.

Our offense is always good. It will be again this year. Your offense isn't good. You won't get by on a physical run game. We have 4 SRs starting on the DL and veteran LBs and DBs, and with your shaky QB, we will crowd the box and stuff the run again.

I don't think your DL vs OUs OL is the key to the game. You won't get to Jones any more than last year.

The key to the game is Ash vs the OU defense.

I don't like to be the guy defending OU, but two things stick out. One is that we don't have a proven true TE on the roster. There is some hope for the current group, but I'm not going to grade Harsin based on their productivity in pretty much any game. I think we should be pleased with exceptionally average combine with scoring/big play outbursts off of "funk" plays this year. We're still a few years away there. That's how bad it's been.

And OU's db's were all over our passing game in 08. Colt hit minuscule windows time and time again. I'm sure they can be had over the top off of good play action, but 45-35 was more about a sensational performance by McCoy combined with Ship abusing the middle than OU's secondary.

Ignore DR's input. His perspective is based on the perception that his Sooner's schooled a mature well oiled Longhorn machine. Picking off true freshmen who were 4th string just six weeks before, abusing 4 guards ( three of which were underclassmen) and a true frosh LT, while scoring on a talented but young secondary learning a new defense isn't particularly hard to do. It's a shame for him that we won't be bringing that team back to Dallas.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

Being sold on Reynolds and Stills after watching your passing game disintegrate once Broyles was injured is a head scratcher as well. They effectively disappeared, and the OU passing game with pre-season Heisman candidate Jones managed one whole TD pass and 6 picks in the last 4 games of the season. I'm sure you guys will be fine, though.

Agree...not taking anything away from OU because they're gonna score all year long...just the nature of their offense...that being said, I look @ the players they've lost (@ many positions) from last year & just don't see solid overall replacements, at least not yet

Regarding Harsin...IMO, at some point, he's gonna have to take the next step...gonna have to have that WOW factor game that changes the confidence for the Texas offense...& I believe it will be against OU's def this year...I'm pleased with his 1st year in Austin, just wanna see him take the next step to great

That was with Broyles on the field drawing most of the attention. They will have to stand on their own merits this time. They had trouble down the stretch last year, after Broyles was injured, even against some suspect defenses.

With a new DC and 12 veteran defenders returning, it's a little early to call OUs defense suspect. On the other hand, the word suspect may be accurate considering the new DC.

I know I can't wait to see if our defense improves under Stoops.

Yeah our offense sputtered down the stretch without Whaley and Broyles. Whaley is showing signs of fully recovering and a good sized Juco Damian Williams will get a chance to play RB.

Stills wasn't the same after Broyles went down but he was hindered by a pinched nerve in his neck/shoulder area. Reynolds was pretty solid all season. Trey Franks played decent, but RS freshman Kameel Jackson played really well as he got more reps.

I believe the plan this year is for Stills/Franks to take over Broyles role in the slot, and outside guys to be Metoyer, Reynolds, Jackson, and Juco Cortney Gardner. Those 6 guys are a pretty good core.

We have an outstanding group of true freshman that may find it tough to get on the field.

Look, I'd rather be the guy in this conversation whose team won 10 games instead of 8. However, although every year is different, how you finish one year may carry over to the next. OU lost 3 of its last 6 regular season games, and the defense gave up over 40 points in each of those. You lost to Tech at home, and they proceeded to collapse from that point on. In the most important game of the season, you could only muster 10 points against a very poor OSU defense. Both OU and Texas had to deal with several injured offensive players in the second half of 2011, but Texas managed to finish strong against A&M and Cal, with the defense dominating a good offense in both cases. Texas will have all its running backs healthy, including Jonathan Gray, The QB who was 4th string and a redshirt candidate going into the fall, wound up as the starter. Inexperienced QB and banged up RBs = poor offense, especially behind an inexperience OL. It's hard to imagine the offense not being better, and the few losses on defense have been replaced with players who look like they should fit right in.

The only way to settle the argument is to do it on the field. See you in Dallas.

Your offense should be better. If you keep Shipley, Bergeron, and Brown healthy there is little doubt you have weapons. Injuries to young guys is to be expected and they were all true freshman. They will have to prove that being prone to injury is not their norm.

OU pretty much fell apart without Whaley and Broyles as the lack of sustained drives put our defense on the field more to be exposed.

I think many Sooners began to buy into the yearly contention of Horns that BV was no Mike Stoops. Tensions between BV and DB coach Martinez didn't help much either. I think Sooner fans are ready to agree with Horns again in that Mike Stoops took a lot of OUs defensive mojo with him when he left.

One thing is for certain, we feel very comfortable now with our DB coaching. I still feel BV was a great LB evaluator and coach so it is yet to be determined how Kish fits in now. On the bright side, Mike Stoops and Tim Kish have worked together and continuity between them should be consistant.

Texas consistently starts this game slow. We never seem to match OU's intensity until well into the first quarter and we're usually trailing by a couple of scores already.

OU's pass defense was 79th in the country last year.

We had gotten so much read and react that it was difficult to watch down the stretch. All conference OCs knew where they could confuse us then hit us. Our defenders started looking like they were surprised they got suckered.

BV still did a good job of bringing pressure, but his series's of prevent D was so predictable. Guys like RGIII just looked us over until he found an open receiver. Our guys were plenty talented but hamstrung by scared play calling.

It's difficult to watch a Diaz style of in your face pressure and tight man coverage really make it tough on an opponent and eventually wear them down, then to see OU with the same talent but struggle to hold someone under 500 yards. UT has had two DCs in a row that didn't want to give up 300 yards.

Yeah Diaz is more risky, but what good does it do to be cautious and still give up 500 yards and 40 points? BV just outcuted himself too much the past few years. In my opinion, never let a good accurate QB have time to scan the field, never. We did it all the time and Tech just played pitch and catch all game with our 7 or 8 defenders standing around waiting in the secondary.

MS talks about not changing too much, but I know he doesn't like to let a QB get comfortable. He gets players focused too. Back in the day when practice was open, the funniest part was watching Mike Stoops interact. Most of the time berating, but some of the time like Dad shelling out brief praise. He gets their attention.

OU has solid talent on D, can't wait to see what difference MS makes in our attitude and precision.

Living here in Oklahoma many of the Sooners fans I have talked with believe history will repeat itself now that MS is back. I am of the opinion that you guys need to tap the brakes a bit. Things change and since he has been a head coach MS may not be as happy working for his brother. Being that I am a native Texan and a Longhorn fan I am considered to be full of bs. Not saying OU won't be successful. Just don't expect them to be as dominate as they were before.
As for myself, I have more of a wait and see attitude about the UT offense. They will be much better. The question is whether or not they will be ready to challenge for the conference championship. The one thing I am certain. Texas now has the offensive staff to get them where they need to be.
