Notion regarding OU, the SEC and us

  • The most bothersome idea that seems to be getting traction in this whole mess is the notion that we couldn't compete in the SEC and that we need to cling to the XII because we need easy wins. What the heck sort of cowardly thinking is that?

Tell me what Texas can offer the SEC that we don't already have? If it was about adding powerful schools then we wouldn't have added Mizzou.

The next two teams into the SEC will be NC State and West Virginia

Seriously, if you think A&M somehow delivers you the state of Texas you clearly don't know Texas. The second largest and most populous state in the country has room for two schools. And it's not an even split by the way.

Is that true? I thought the SEC let the schools keep their own revenue for 3rd tier rights? Shows what I know.

They do right now, but they are creating a SEC network.

Well, the last time I checked, "brave" aggy moved to the SEC, went 10-2 and finished fifth in their conference. If they had stayed in the Big 12, they would have likely been undefeated, won their conference and played Notre Dame in the MNC game. I suspect they would have beat Notre Dame. So was aggy brave or stupid in moving to the SEC?

Staying in the Big 12 has nothing to do with cowardice. It has everything to do with common sense because moving to the SEC would be a net negative financial and competitive scenario for UT. There is no upside and a lot of downside to moving to the SEC. Aggy had nothing but upside and caught lightening in a bottle their first year and still finished fifth in the SEC. Long term, aggy will be even more mediocre in the SEC than they were in the Big 12. It would be crazy for UT to duplicate aggy thinking about anything except replacing a failed head coach.

  • I don't have a link but I was reading an article a while back that a Harvard professor and his research group did on the % of fans that follow schools in their states.

The only four states that I looked at was Texas, Ok., Kansas and Iowa. OU had about 65% of the state, Kansas was a large margin over KSU. I don't remember the exact percent but Iowa was about the same as OU, 65% over ISU. Texas had 60% and the other 40% was divided with the other schools in Texas.

At one time, the article stated, OU had over 80% of the state, I didn't realize it was that great .

OSU only has Stillwater and the rural area around it. There's just no population near stillwater. Tulsa is pretty even once you divide OU, OSU and Arkansas. But everything from Stillwater south is all OU. Edmond, Guthrie, OKC, Norman and Lawton. You can always tell the # of OSU fans because they're only Alumni, they don't have many t shirt fans, but why would they.

I have never disagreed that the Big 12 can't hold it's own on the field. But as a brand name it is failing, and outside of the region it has little to offer as big TV draws.

    3. The SEC has an agreement that prevents adding another school from the same state as an existing SEC school. Now that the Aggies are in, no other school from the state of Texas will be allowed in the conference. Plus, there has to be a unanimous vote of conference Presidents to admit a new school to the conference. At a minimum, A & M, Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, and Alabama would not vote for adding Texas for recruiting reasons alone.

Bottom line, Texas is not getting into the SEC.

I know for an absolute fact that Texas has been repeatedly approached about entering the SEC. I also know that aTm at a high level would be supportive of having Texas in the SEC, 100 years or rivalry and tradition is tough to give up. There is no one team per state rule in the SEC.
It is my opinion the college football is going to go through a dramatic change over the next decade. 1) The new 4 team playoff will eventually lead to an expansion in the number of teams and the playoffs will supplant bowl games. The money from the playoffs will be gigantic, 2) We are on our way to moving to four 16 team conferences, these super conferences will likely be outside the NCAA with their own rules such as cash for athletes in some form. 3) While we have conferences positioning themselves currently, the reality is that the deal is being driven by TV and ratings. The 64 left standing while mostly compromised of current conference members will likely see some movement. Schools with lesser facilities and budgets (Vandy and Miss St. for instance) could very well see themselves booted from the deal. Teams like Texas and OU will definitely have a seat at the table.

The current SEC contract allows schools to sell their 3rd tier rights and keep the revenue. It does not allow single school networks. When the new SEC network is up and running all schools will have to turn over their 3rd tier rights to the league. It isn't a question of whether Texas could get into the SEC. Texas has no interest in joining the SEC. If we did, we would already be there.

Beware of posts that talk about a "buddy" and possibly a brother-in-law and someone who is "in the know" and blah blah. You are about to get your boots covered in manure. Besides, the remark about LHN and SEC was patently wrong, and no one who is "in the know" would have glossed past that.... Never understand why people like to manufacture fabrications and post these dramatic mini-novels.

OP - try the scout West Viriginia website. They will love you and play with you.

Dude what's your problem? Holy cow.

All I did was post something that I was told by someone who I believe potentially has some insight and view. If you have a differing opinion, that is fine. Just say so. But I don't think you need to be an obnoxious jackass. As far as I'm concerned who can move on over to the WV website.

Maybe, another thing that might happen is that new conferences are formed and they just aren't invited. You can look at the current conferences and pick the weak links pretty easily in terms of budget and facilities.

That's easy to say on a message board but in real life, things don't work that easy.

The Big 12 did it to the SWC. Imagine four "new" conferences: West, Midwest, South, North... something like that. Nobody has a claim on anything... that's when you'll see the laggards cut loose. But not until.
