Gerry, Bobby and Jeff...do you think Mack and company continue to recruit RSJ and fight to get him back in the fold?

In the past it seems feelings would be hurt and they would move on. Hope that is not the case.

    Texas is recruiting him.

I can read between the lines. But the problem with that is people just assume anything and everything.

So he's dealing with a street agent and/or his AAU coach.

    Awesome, our wheelhouse.

Not necessarily a street agent per se

Bingo, the thought that immediately crossed my mind when I heard the news was the play everyone was singing RSJ's praise over. The incomplete pass that he caught, or the one that should have been. That might have more of an impact than we thought. He might not hav been in awe of swoops.

I edited out my post because I don't want to throw Ricky's family under the bus like that and I can understand as much as anyone the temptation involved, but what you read was the crux of the situation.

Pray for his family that the decision they make is a sound on based on his best future prospects and nothing else. That's all we can hope for as he's a good kid at heart, but good kids have a way to being steered into bad situations by family in these situations.

I understand where you are going with this but these aren't the best examples to use. We won an NC without Peterson and Dupree last 1 season at OU.

Not sure you know where I am going because you seem to have missed the most important issue in the comment. Maybe you didn't realize it but you made my point with the reference to us winning a NC while losing AP to Sooners. The kid is important but he is only one player and not as big as losing AP. That's my point.
I have almost forty years of misses. Which one or ones do you prefer?

would you mind sending a PM to PDX Horn

I still think he'd be getting the same level of negative recruiting about how we would use him, why we keep having players leaving, who's going to throw him the ball etc. etc. but it probably wouldn't have had as much of an effect unless you add in the whole basketball angle.

I am all caught up. Thanks for thinking of me though. peace

Is the issue of comprehension with the writer or the reader? Reacting to too much sugar perhaps? Original post was pretty clear. The purpose being to help all the hand wringers on the threads about the decommittment.

  • Before people start having hypertension from this annoucement, I think people should step back from the edge and remember that it is a free country and 17 year olds, whether impressed upon by adults, are still 17 year olds. Very prone to this type of indecision.

I am more concerned with the upcoming season than losing one good player that we don't even know what his production at the next level will be.Not to mention he is not due on campus till 2013. Is he irreplaceable?

I think the current staff is solid. Let's trust them to manage the process. From all indication, the kid notwithstanding, they are on top of things with evaluation and ferreting out talent. That is all fans can ask of them.

  • What is the common nexus here? L$U, A$M.

    Answer: $

Street agent and/or relatives seeking "extra benefits".

We are going to need to get serious with the under-the-table tactics of $EC/L$U/A$M.

We must have a conversation with the NCAA enforcement personnel to have any hope of combating illegal recruiting tactics.

Thomas, Johnson, Darius White, Rashaad Samples, RSJ.

There, at first glance, appears to be a common thread in these unusual developments. A$M may have gone to the Dark Side in the blink of an eye and is returning to the Jackie Sherrill era tactics.

I normally don't post over here, I just like to lurk to get multiple view points, but this is laughable.

If you're looking for someone dirty in all this, it'll be Baylor, or anyone else saying they are recruiting him for mainly bball (cough Kentucky cough).

Thomas Johnson - his cousin was a commit here and we run a WR friendly offense...no hard to figure out.
Samples - IF he picks us, it's because again, we run a WR friendly offense, his dad and Sumlin are friends, and we some of his Skyline buddies committed/enrolled.
RSJ - I think he ends back up with you guys or LSU. If he ends up at Baylor, than you know something really dirty happened.

  • Meh. Personally, I think he'll come back to the good guys in the end. Just get Maulerson on him and he'll change his mind. Let the kid check out what's out there, and he'll quickly realize why he chose Texas to begin with. Plenty of time to court him back

  • I think that recruiting in Texas is approaching an era of nastiness not seen since the god old bad old days of " The Pony Express ".

  • My head spins with the permutations of all these reasons..

I watched Tony Gonzales play both football and B-ball at Cal. He was okay in basketball.. sort of like the typical hulking football guy with bullk but no finesse but he progressed with his footwork but was an inside close to the basket scorer. In football, he was good but you would never have predicted his HOF career.

It can be done to play both but he really took off after he started focusing on football. He was good enough to play D1 basketball and RSJ looks even better to cause him some questions as to what sport should he do. A guy who puts up 20 to 30 pts consistently in AAU is legit. So, I can see his quandry. He will do well at either but I suspect will do unbelievably in football especially if he lasts as long as Gonzales.

RSJ should go play some summer hoops out in LA or NY against some pros to get a feel for what he can become, get it out of his system, or help him make that solid decision. Might as well sample the cow before getting hitched forever.

PS. I think he would even more special at WR with motion, Hback looks, TE, whatever.. imagine the matchup issues on a small DB or slow LB with his leaping and quickness. The priority should be more, other TEs and have RSJ out there all the time as a jumbo WR with the ability to spread the defense or be a big blocker on the wings. That would be awesome. Enough with the full time TE talk. He is a special athlete. take advantage of it.

Interesting take, however, I'm not buying the "dominating against the dominant SEC defenses" is what it takes to make first round money in the NFL.

If he completely dominates in the Big 12, his road to first round NFL money will be all but guaranteed.

This kid can't (I hope) have an ego that would dictate a defection to the SEC just to face better competition.

I'm trying to the of the best TE's (I think RSJ will play here because he will outgrow WR) in the NFL and if they went up against those SEC defenses:

    J Finley - Big 12. A Hernendez-SEC
    M Lewis - PAC 10. J Witten-SEC
    J Gresham - Big 12
Gronkowsky (sp?) Patriots - PAC 10
    J Graham - ACC
    V Davis - Big east
    B Pettigrew - Big 12
    T Moeaki - Big 10
    T Gonzales - PAC 10

I agree with the top Jimmy in that going up against SEC defenses rather than other conferences defense will better prepare you for the NFL

I understand your point, but it's invalidated by the Ryan Perrilloux debacle. Did a lot of people believe he'd decommit? Yes. Did it shock and anger the staff? yes. Did they get lucky that McCoy turned out to make it not matter and make us all forget? Yes. That doesn't change how big it was at that moment in time. That happened the week of signing day. This happened 8 months before one. So it is hard to see how the margin can be considered large at all, no matter how it is couched.

This. Ryan Perriloux was a much, much bigger decommit at the time. This one is Brantley-ish.

Perriloux may have surprised fans but it was not a surprise to people involved in recruiting at the time. Furthermore, RSJ, I feel, is a certified bad ass.

I did not get that feeling with Perriloux despite whatever he was ranked at the time.

Bobby, you have made revisionary history into an art form; but this takes the cake. Losing a position player eight months away from signing day doesn't come close to having the #2 QB in the country decommitt the week before signing day. I don't know what your motivation is, but its getting old.

Not Bobby but what the hell could bother you about losing Perriloux? The guy is a bust. If he couldn't win the QB job at LSU then he sure as hell couldn't win it at Texas.

Not trying to take away from your point about Colt covering up the Perriloux miss,

We were blessed Perriloux went elsewhere.

    He was poison to LSU.

Didn't Perilloux win the SEC? I don't think he was beat out, i just think he beat himself makiing stupid mistakes.

What about the term revisionary history escapes you. Perriloux was the consensus #1 dual threat QB in the 2005, the next Vince Young. Every school in the country coveted him.

  • By the way, for those who think that Perriloux was a complete bust at LSU: He was the MVP of the SEC championship game win over Tennesee that lead LSU to the national championship game against Ohio State. In his two starts at LSU, he was 40-55 for 550 yards. He was a huge talent.
