Note on RSJ

  • I've been covering recruiting before Mack Brown came to Texas.

RSJ's decision is the biggest decommitment from the Horns in the Mack Brown era by a large, large margin. There's no other way to couch it.

Speaking of 'couch', I suspect there are a lot of us that will need a therapist on speed dial if this isn't some kind of elaborate hoax. signcurse

Those who can, do; those who can't, coach; those who never could, complain about the first two.

So what is really going on? Has Mack lost it? Is he done? Why is Giles RSJs recruiter? Mack should be the one. Something is going on internally and it's about to explode. I just hope it doesn't. Just a hunch.

  • We desperately need to have some success this fall. A lot of recruits might have given us a pass for last year with all new coaches but we cannot look anything like we did last year.

I understand your point, but it's invalidated by the Ryan Perrilloux debacle. Did a lot of people believe he'd decommit? Yes. Did it shock and anger the staff? yes. Did they get lucky that McCoy turned out to make it not matter and make us all forget? Yes. That doesn't change how big it was at that moment in time. That happened the week of signing day. This happened 8 months before one. So it is hard to see how the margin can be considered large at all, no matter how it is couched.

Assistant coaches always spearhead recruiting. Mack doesn't do it because then he'd have to do it for every hot shot who would feel slighted if the HC wasn't the one recruiting him personally. Oscar Giles is an excellent recruiter and very good at damage control. He was a key factor in holding our recruiting class together after the 2010 season.

RSJ has probably had a lot of friends and rival recruiters in his head telling him how great an athlete he is, and why did he commit so early without looking around more. He could be hearing other BB recruits on the AAU circuit talking about all the extra-curriculars that this or that top BB prospect got. He views recruiting as his big chance in life, and he wants to look around to see if he really missed out on something. He knows UT doesn't allow commits to do that, so he decommits to see if he made the right decision.

It's rare that a decommit returns to the fold, but that's the job we've got ahead of us here. This is not the time for wounded pride. If want want elite players, we have to adapt and do what we have to do to get them.
Wanting to be a Longhorn early in the process doesn't matter. Wanting to be a Longhorn on sigining day does.

  • I just hope our fans show some class with all this, and don't cause any resentment to the university. I can understand a kid wanting to see his options. However, if he wants to line up against DBU good luck.

  • Everyone wants to conclude that somehow UT botched things over the weekend. I have a different theory.

He competed against top recruits at the camp and dominated, realizing he's the cream of the crop. He now has a different outlook on recruiting and wants to do his due diligence 8 months out. If he was committed to another school he might not have de-committed but taken visits while committed.

His Twitter handle was 'UTbound' and Eric Nahlin still seems convinced he'll end up at UT.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. At the time, without the benefit of hindsight Perrilloux's change on signing day was a devastating blow. Without the miracle that was Colt McCoy we have our 5-7 debacle in 2007, not 2011.

Think about that - because of that one change and without getting lucky on Colt - who was largely recruited because he would not threaten the star recruit things could be completely different at Texas today. Would Mack have survived bad seasons in 2007 and 2008? Obviously things worked out well so in hindsight people diminish the Perrilloux switch.

But I definitely agree it was far worse than losing a tight end of defensive end prospect 8 months out from singing day.

  • Perriloux may have surprised fans but it was not a surprise to people involved in recruiting at the time. Furthermore, RSJ, I feel, is a certified bad ass.

I did not get that feeling with Perriloux despite whatever he was ranked at the time.

  • All I know in speaking to an LSU friend is they are very giddy about what happened and their chances with him and everything he said that included the letter S he used $ instead. He is usually spot on when it comes to LSU athletics.

Combine that with some excellent negative recruiting by other schools and it raises doubts in the kids mind. What doesn't make sense is if his concern is about getting the ball thrown to him and that we have begun to emphasize running over throwing then how does going to LSU solve that problem. Their passing O is just as horrid and is run first. Certainly their bbal team is far from good so that makes no sense either. I can see aggy touting their pass first offense as being enticing. Baylor combines the best of both worlds with Briles offense and Drew bball team.

As has been said, its not always the recruit who opens up the recruiting process.

Can you just put everything out there instead of provide little snippets all day long? Or are you trying to be Geoff Ketchum with your coyness?

Mack and GD were surprised also. Not shocked but they believed he was signing with Texas.

I think what makes this one so unique is that it happened the night/day after being in Austin. That is what seems like the big slap in the face.

The more you follow GH the more you will learn that he gives you everything you need to know with these comments. If he said it, he would drown in phone calls and text from coaches/family/advisors of kids...

Not trying to take away from your point about Colt covering up the Perriloux miss, but he wasn't the reason we didn't tank in 2007. Jamaal Charles was. Without Charles, we go 7-5 or possibly 6-6 with a loss to UCF in 2007. If Ash has Colt's 2007 numbers in 2012, no one here is going to be pleased.

The day Gerry tries to be Geoff Ketchum will be a cold day in hell. Just my $.02.
