Non-UT Big 12 Bball notes for week of July 16

  • Thanks for all your input guys, but to keep everything in a semblance of order, I suggest any UT recruiting news be added to NYHorn's Texas basketball recruiting thread. This is merely my weekly meanderings about doings at other conference schools. (I guess Big 12 stuff is OK for the Horns board instead of the 6th Street board. At least it is all relevant to UT athletics, so I'll keep it here until directed otherwise.)

    Baylor

Getting a visit from Tyus Jones, a top 2014 PG. According to this report, Jones wants to be a package deal with Okafor and Pinson, and those two haven't shown interest in Baylor, but 2014 signing period is a long way away.

    Kansas

Conner Frankamp broke his foot and is done for the summer.

Bossi interview with Lawrence Journal World on Frankamp and Greene (another 2013 KU commit)

    Kansas State

In the category of university inferiority complex, we have K-State responding to Self's All-Star celebrity game homer with a Bruce Weber interview about being a baseball fan. (Zero info on the KSU basketball team, so don't bother.)

    Texas Tech

Rodrigo Silva decided to skip Lubbock to play pro in Brazil. That's of no effect on the 2012-13 team, since it was reported he would have been redshirted anyway with Tapsoba and Kravic being available.

Things should pick up soon. KU, KSU, OSU will all be going on trips to other countries in August, and there should be a lot to report then.

Texas is the latest to offer Xavier Rathan-Mayes, a 2013 SG from CIA Bounce. He visited UCLA in June.

papa horn, thanks for that. I'll put it on the Texas basketball recruiting thread. I don't think many people will be looking here for UT recruiting info.

  • I wonder if Barnes will consider playing overseas in the coming years... It seems.so valuable with the extra time you get with players, especially when they are so young like this Texas team...

I wonder about that, too. I think the advantage is somewhat tempered by the new rules permitting coaches to work with players at least a little during the summer, but there's nothing like actually playing games to get a team ready to play games.

  • I also saw that Texas offered a 2013 shooting guard from Georgia. Tim Quarterman is the name.

Yeah, that's in the basketball recruiting thread. But Gerry mentioned the possibility of non-committabe offers to stay in the hunt...

  • Interesting. I have commented before on the likelihood of Wannah Bail having clearing house issues. In the DMN blog comment about Silva, there was this little gem:

In addition to Silva’s pending departure, Rivals150 forward Wannah Bail has left campus after a good first semester of summer school due to an academic issue.

According to Level, head coach Billy Gillispie expects Bail back for the fall semester.

I have no idea what the academic issue is, but that can't be a good sign.
