I’ve already outlined in one post why I like the location better, and I’ve talked about how the true bowl shape makes for better views from almost any seat. And I’ve talked about why the ugly blimp that is JerryWorld in the middle of Arlington is bad, the ads are extremely loud and annoying, the screen detracts away from the game, and the views from a lot of the seats suck.
Here’s one more reason. I went to my first Texas ou game 2 years ago. The weather was great for that game. A cool breeze was shooting through the gaps of the stadium and while I was standing out in the walkway looking at the patina on one of the original columns with the paint peeling off of it I had a bit of a religious experience. I realized I was watching the greatest rivalry in all of sports, and where I was watching it is the same place where Texas has won all their previous National Championships. It’s where Stoney Clark stoned James Allen. It’s a place where Colt McCoy, Vince Young, Ricky Williams, Major Applewhite, James Street, Bobby Layne, Earl Campbell, Tommy Nobis, and so may more Texas greats have all visited. It where we’ve met gut-wrenching defeats and where we’ve had glorious victories. It’s also where we defeated Roger Staubach who later returned to pilot the Cowboys through their glory years. Where Tom Landry coached, where Bob Hayes, Mel Renfro, Don Meredith, and Bob Lilly played. And it goes on and on. The Cotton Bowl is Hallowed Ground. To me it’s pathetic when Deloss, or anyone else makes comments about we should move it here or there. What you should do is STFU, and learn some history and a little appreciation for one of the few sacred traditions we have left in college football.
