  • Bobby & Co...great job on the list

    - Looks like a light year @ QB

    - Whoever gets TE Jay Rome is gonna be very happy...starting to think he may start from day 1...very gifted & talented TE

    - Does Steve Edmond stay @ ILB? I was thinking he'd move to OLB with his speed & coverage abilities...

  • i really like your rating system. It looks like one of the best out there right now.

    @ut755

i think Walsh was a guy that just tore it up at camps this summer.

  • Can you give us a little insight as to who helps compile and stack the list and what the initial process was as well as the expectations going forward. How will players be evaluated, and by who? How frequently will the list be updated?

  • First of all, here's a link to a write-up Gerry and Jeff put together on the state's top quarterbacks.

I think Walsh was at the top at the time of this list, but everything is subject to change. One of those reasons is that Ash seems to coming into his own as a senior. We knew he had a high ceiling as a prospect, but he's actually performing better overall this year.

Meanwhile, Walsh is a dual threat QB in the truest sense of the term. He can hurt you with his legs as much or more than his arm IMO.

As far as the national rankings, who does them, how often they will be done, etc.

Gerry is involved in this process along with four others. Players will be updated multiple times during their high school years, likely once every two months or so. Our next update for this list will be late October.

I like Walsh because he is a true dual threat QB, he's got terrific leadership, he's instinctive, a ++ arm and is just a playmaker. He's a coaches kid and just has a serious passion for the game. He can quick game, fit intermediate or stretch the field vertically and does so with the type of arm that is a difference maker. He has to watch the flying left elbow. That is when he can go through a period of inconsistency.

I like Ash too. He's a very good thrower of the ball and pressure doesn't bother him. Better athlete than probably given credit for nationally. He's not scared to fit a tough ball.

  • Know it's blasphamey in some circles but not sure we are making the right move going away from the spread to a more pure pro style attack.

But then I've been a fan of true dual threat QBs in college since. . . . .pretty much forever.

The ability to make the off scheduled play, to force D's to account for every player all the time is a huge schematic advantage.

It's not blasphemy here - it's just discussion. But just to be clear, Ash is more athletic than say Garrett Gilbert. But less so than Colt McCoy.

He's more in that Matt Stafford type of functional athleticism category.

I understand what you're saying regarding the spread...but, IMHO, the spread offense is the single best reason for the lack of OL development over the past few years...because so many TX high schools use the spread, I believe OL are not developed in run blocking & controlling the LOS...just too much pass/zone blocking & they enter college behind the curve...

When I look at a player like Kyle Hix, I see a future low 1st round - 2nd round pick if he plays for ALA...b/c of Saban's offense, I firmly believe Hix would've developed much better over the years without the spread/zone read offense...just my $.02

So why did Texas go with Ash and not Walsh?

I believe Walsh had family connections to Okie State & had been a long-time fan of Okie State
