  • Tom Izzo v Rick Majerus about as good of a coaching matchup as one can get in college hoops. Two of the very best "pure" basketball coaches of our era IMO.

Big day for the state of Florida.

    Chalk city.

Crazy how different the Thursday/Saturday and Friday/Sunday(?) games have been. Two double-digit seeds are guaranteed a spot after today (Xavier-Lehigh and USF-Ohio) and either a 7 (Florida) or 15 (Norfolk St.) will be alive next weekend too.

  • Four shots for big upsets, Creighton over UNC is the only one I see with a chance of happening. Maybe I'm too gunshy after looking smart for about 32 minutes before my prediction of Baylor succumbing to oxygen starvation was laughed out of the Pit in the final 8 minutes last night. (Midway through the half, they looked dead, too.)

Georgetown gets 130+ minutes a game from guys 6'8" or taller. I suspect Howell or Leslie (or both) get into foul trouble and NC State can't hang with the Hoyas from then on.

St. Louis is a good A-10 team, but I can't see it handling MSU's front line.

Purdue doesn't shoot that well, doesn't prevent opponents from shooting that well, and it is 1-8 in its last 9 games against ranked teams (OK, Wisconsin wasn't ranked on Jan. 12, but should have been, and I counted them as one of the 8--you caught me). It doesn't turn the ball over--ever, and it shoots threes at a high percentage, but that won't be enough.

Meanwhile, if Henson can't go, then Carolina loses its biggest advantage over Creighton--rebounding and interior defense. Creighton hoists a ton of threes and makes them at a very high percentage. UNC is average at guarding the perimeter.

Creighton could have a shot if Henson is still out. Carolina was actually outrebounded by VErmont, but it outrebounded FSU, so that could still go either way. Game is in Greensboro, which gives UNC the decided advantage, making it hard to pick an upset.

  • So of course Howell and Leslie stayed out of foul trouble for the most part in the first half and NC State is leading 30-27 on the strength of offensive rebounding and 10 Georgetown turnovers. Georgetown was up 25-15 with 5 minutes to go, but it concluded the half shooting 1-5 and committing 6 turnovers. Horrible end to the half for it.

  • One of the guys in my Sunday spin class is a Georgetown grad. Total east coast snob. Go State.

    gordosan

  • Georgetown starts the second half doing nothing th helf teammates get open away from the ball, but Howell just picked up his third foul with 16:40 left. Howell comes out. Georgetown is down four after getting one free throw.

  • So much for NC State slipping with Howell on the bench. Hit a pair of threes, gave up a transition layup after a steal, now shooting ft up 8.

Two great coaches. The difference is that Izzo has Dramon Green and Rick doesn't.

NC State has been getting good open looks.

  • It took Georgetown 5 minutes to get it back to 4 points. Technical called on . . . somebody. Announcers promise they'll tell us about it AFTER the commercials.

Short break. Double tech for woofing. Brown and Clark. Third on Brown.

Looks like we could be in for a good finish to this one. Good game to get today started.

  • NC State looks really good this game--much more active on both ends than Georgetown. NC STate just went to a zone though. Gave up a three, but got a steal out of it.

    bierce

  • Georgetown is the team with the key big in foul trouble. Sims just went to the bench with his fourth with 7:56 left and NC State leading by three with Howell about to shoot ft.

I'm so ashamed for not describing this game as a good chance for an upset. It's not like Georgetown has been playing great of late.

  • There's been a ton of made and missed deep threes in this game. Georgetown's Thompson gets to 20 points on that long one.

    Dave Behr

  • Howell is strong on the boards but can't get anything to drop. Thompson for the Hoyas is draining some long threes. I agree this has turned into a fun game.
Ok strike that about nothing dropping. FTs are good

  • Sims comes back in with about 6 minutes left. Geogetown down 3 with ball.

I'm thinking they are pretty happy in Raleigh with Gottfried now.

    bierce

  • Georgetown hit a couple of threes against the zone to pull close, but it is going three-happy and taking too many long threes without running the ball inside first. No chance to get Howell out with fouls now.

As I'm typing, Hoyas airball another three.

    No doubt.

I grew up a diehard Michigan fan, so it pains me to say this, but I think Izzo is by far the best coach in the country. I'd take him over anybody. Not only that, but he's never done or said anything that would allow me to dislike him in the least bit.

  • And another three lands on the bridge.

Georgetown has settled for horrible shots over the last 4 minutes or so.
