My take on Ole Miss

  • Nemesis Prime said...

IMO, it's a no win situation for Texas.

Win big, oh well it's Ole Miss, they suck. Win close, it's sky is falling. Ole Miss shouldn't hang with UT.

Obviously a loss sucks either way.

I'm content if we beat the spread. I'm ok with any win though as that's the goal.

Btw, I'm not saying they suck, I'm talking perception.

Totally agree. This is a large part of why I'm not too unhappy that we're no longer playing A&M as that game was always perceived the same way. Nothing positive was ever gained by beating them. The key difference is that I am saying A&M sucks, though.

I agree with you as far as national perception of Texas goes, but I don't really concern myself with any of that at this point in the college football season. If this game were at the end of the year and Texas needed a win to jump somebody in the polls that would be a totally different story.

This will be a great test for this team IMO. An early game on the road against a decent opponent (that they should beat) will help out a lot as the season progresses.

And those of us (meaning local media and you diehard fans) will know the difference in a big win, close win or loss. With a bye week followed by the start of Big 12 play coming up after this game, this is one that I've thought for a long time needs to be the game where Texas shows it's ready to compete for a conference title.

Don't feel comfortable then. No Ivan Williams on this roster.

Speaking of Ivan, I saw him in the spring during softball season. He was an umpire at the game. He looks like he could sweat off about 25 pounds and step right back into the fray. He is a really nice guy and still very solidly built.

  • I think above all, this is a huge test for Ash. This is a game where we should come away with a much better feeling as to how he has progressed from last year in terms of making the right decisions under pressure. He'll certainly have the home crowd to contend with, but also a defense that I expect will give him some different looks and bring pressure at times to force him in to bad throws. I also expect them (Ole Miss) to try and stop the run early. Our line has to be able to step up and give Ash enough time to make his throws, so I would call that test number two.

Everything has a different feel to it on the road (especially early in the game) and so while on paper we should be able to win this one, I'm not as confident in terms of predicting a blowout. I think this could be a low scoring game, something along the lines of 28-14 type of win. SEC games tend to slow the tempo of the game, so it will be interesting to see how our offense comes out early. If we are successful in our run game early on, then the score seperation could be much higher. I still expect Harsin to come out and change things up a bit. I would look for him to come out passing (short routes) to get Ash going and settle him down early. I think Ole Miss will be looking for the run early, so will see what happens. No matter what, this one should provide a much more realistic view of the state of the team going in to conference play,

  • Just a word of warning. When OM starts getting beat down, the fans start throwing whiskey bottles at opposing fans. Be careful and good luck

  • I'm watching the replay of their UTEP game right now, UTEP could easily be winning this ball game. Went for it on 4th and Goal at the 1 and then threw a pick in the end zone on their next possession. Ole miss also fumbled and were lucky to get back on it.

Worst part is it's cheap whiskey.

Should be a good contingent of burnt orange there, so I'm sure they'll have no problem drinking it, but as papa says beware of the cheap stuff.

they also seemed to drop the all from what i could tell was no reason .. well see if they can force that many turnovers on what seems to be a very ball controlling offense
