My take on Ole Miss

The 260 lb DT y'all are talking about is true freshman Issac Gross. He was an under armor all American. He would been redshirted if we were deeper! He has unbelievable first step quickness and doesn't give up on plays. Can't wait til next year when he comes back at 285

Our bench is littered with under armor and army all Americans, we'll see what he has on game day. I have no doubt he might get some occassional pass rush, but I doubt he holds up against the run especially when the backs hitting up the middle are almost his weight.

    Good stuff Bobby.

I agree with the poster who said it's not going to be as easy as originally thought.... or at least it doesn't appear that way right now.

Looking for a 4 touchdown beat down in Mississippi. I think we control the game from wire-to-wire.

  • Ole Miss was losing to Central Arkansas at the half and if UTEP (with their 2nd string QB & RB) hadn't turned it over on downs at the 1 and thrown an int in the end zone they would've been leading the game in the 4th quarter. That's also not taking into account a missed FG. Both games in Oxford.

As long as you don't overlook them, you should handle them easily.

That 2-0 record is fool's gold.

  • They're roster also lists DT's weighing 292, 298, 294 and 317, so if the 260 pound DT isn't holding the point of attack, I would expect to see some heavier guys lining up on Dom again.

I get to turn on my TV and actually watch the Horns play this Saturday instead of hunching over my PC and trying to follow a pirated internet feed.

    Cant wait !!!!

  • I watched OU-UTEP, and UTEP's offense was absolutely worthless once its top RB went down with an injury. I'm not surprised that Ole Miss' defense played well in that game.

  • As many have already mentioned, this will be a game that we have to come out early and send a message with our offense that were not going to allow Ole Miss to make this a game. There crowd will be juiced up under the lights with a national audience tuning in, so I think the task for us is to utilyze our speed players early and often and make it clear that were going to dicatate our tempo and force there D to play catch up. Our D will be ready. I have a feeling that this is the kind of game (on the road) that will have their attention and so I look for them to step up. This is all about our offense and how Ash responds to the pressure early. That's my key going in to this one.

I'm looking for more of a power game early for Texas. The one thing the Ole Miss D seems to have is speed. What they lack is size.

If I were calling plays I'd wear them down physically early, then hit them for big plays once they start getting tired.

But then he will be 20 pounds slower.

    - Ole Miss has a good running back, but the Rebels' run game overall is relatively weak (which is one of the reasons why Houston Nutt got fired a year ago). New head coach Hugh Freeze uses a lot of misdirection to get things going.

And if you're talking about Jeff Scott, I'm pretty sure he entered the season with some back issues - may have even sat out the first game.

As we saw against Wyoming, teams can make plays down field against Texas, but I think it would be tough to make a living that way. If Ole Miss can't establish an effective running game ... well, I don't think they want to deal with Texas defenders with the ears pinned back all evening.

I think Texas offense has to limit mistakes, thereby putting the onus on Ole Miss' offense to win the game. I like Texas' defense in a 60-minute matchup with just about anyone. The stat I'm curious to see at evening's end is time of possession. If Texas runs away with that, which I think they have the personnel to do, it will be an anxious evening for the Rebels.

  • Good thread for an Ole Miss fan to read. I'll give my thoughts for your amusement.

We use 4 RBs (2 of which are true freshman). Scott (who did miss game 1 with a concussion) and Mackey (the ex-QB) get more work than the others. Probably the best way to describe our rbs is a quick burst. Not overly special, but can't make the occasional play. Our WRs are a little lacking aside from Moncrief, and could struggle against the Longhorn secondary. Freeze will probably run a lot of quick routes to get the ball in their hands, so it will come down to how well the Texas secondary tackles. Oline has played better than last year, and with 2 new starters this year, should hopefully improve each game, although Texas is a different animal.

Defensively, I think we will get the ball run down our throats. What it will come down to is turnovers. We have had an opportunistic defense thus far. Whether that's bad play by UCA and UTEP or good play by Ole Miss remains to be seen. We do have some big DTs, particularly Gilbert Pena, they just play behind Gross (the 260 guy everyone is referring to). We run a 4-2-5 so the Stinger (Denzel Nkemdiche, Robert's brother) will have to continue to play well against the run. He will have his hands full with the Texas RBs. I think our secondary will matchup well depending on who is out there. Sawyer is a playmaker, but Goldsen and Pendleton tend to play soft with too much cushion.

We will probably play 7-8 true freshman in the game, which should tell yall something about this Rebel team. Hopefully we can continue our performance from the first 2 games, but I think Texas takes this one in a slightly closer than expected game. 38-24.

  • Nice post - thanks for your thoughts...+1. For your information, we'll be playing at least 8 freshmen, though most will be on special teams...they are actually turning out to be a huge strength for us, especially in coverage....but a few will play key roles, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

  • I thought Diaz said in press conference they play a 4-2-5 nickel for the most part. Is that hybrid 4-3?

Solid post, thanks for sharing. I think Ole Miss fans have a lot to be excited about for the future. I also think Saturday will be a good day for them to get tanked and enjoy the pregame festivities because there won't be much to enjoy during the game. The Texas staff is going to unleash the hounds of hell and this game will be U.G.L.Y. for the Rebels.

    Stick around and post more.

  • Ole Miss has to take a stand on what they want to stop. I think they will sellout to stop the run and take a chance on the back end. I dont know if itll work, but the line being as small as it is, you cant just play it straight up all night. The texas OL has been ok. Nothing like I thought I would see after reading all the posts from this board about them in the preseason. Still, Ole Miss was a sieve against the run, so if the texas running game is what it claims to be, it should roll.

Gonna be interesting to see how Ash performs in his first road game. The whole team for that matter.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

It will be a great test for Ash and this offense to see how well they can execute now. I think Ole Miss will sell out to stop the run at least early on. I'm sure Harsin's game plan will take that into account.

Now it's time to show they belong with the big boys! Hook'em !!!

  • IMO, it's a no win situation for Texas.

Win big, oh well it's Ole Miss, they suck.
Win close, it's sky is falling. Ole Miss shouldn't hang with UT.

Obviously a loss sucks either way.

I'm content if we beat the spread. I'm ok with any win though as that's the goal.

Btw, I'm not saying they suck, I'm talking perception.
