Directv has a channel dedicated to Sandy coverage. Been watching and this is phenomenal from a weather nerd standpoint. However, I can't imagine being one of the people in it. T&P with them.

Gerry, hope she stays safe. Without getting too "weather nerdy", this is why I was totally against the National Hurricane Center reclassifying this "hurricane" as non-tropical before it made landfall. What does that mean in non-meteorological terms? It means that when a system loses its core (warm convective center), you can no longer classify it as a true hurricane, even though the winds associated with it and the damage will be the same. This is semantics by NHC and so instead of having hurricane warnings issued along the coastline inland, you get high wind warnings. Unless you’re in to the weather, people are more likely to take that change as a "downgrade" and view it that the system is not a threat or that it has somehow weakened. I would argue that the system did not lose tropical characteristics and therefore should have remained classified as a hurricane all the way inland. This would have allowed local NWS offices to stress the hurricane conditions more easily using the hurricane warning as evidence that this storm was going to be dangerous (even inland).

As for your sister’s area, I’m expecting that winds will reach hurricane force (gusts) throughout the night and are already as you pointed out at tropical storm force as we speak. Definitely these sustained winds will create an environment for downed trees, power lines and broken windows. The good news (if any) is that I’m not expecting as much severe weather in terms of tornadoes, as is typically the case with land falling tropical systems. That is because on the back side of this storm, there exists a huge trough that is pulling in much colder air in to the core of Sandy and over time this will create some impressive snowfall totals on the western side of the storm and to get tornadoes, you need a "tropical" airmass to be in place.
