My sister lives in Princeton, NJ...they are feeling Sandy now

  • They just lost their first window shutter and it's really starting to get ugly.

From my time in NJ, those houses just aren't built to withstand hurricane force winds. A lot of windows in my sister's house, and so many houses I see - and a lot of trees.

'Supposed" to be sustained 40-50 MPH, and gusts 60-75 MPH in her area until around midnight.

The people that stuck around in Ocean City/Atlantic City are the ones that need some luck IMO.

  • I should be up there later this week. I'll take pics if there are any worth taking. Hope your family rides it out safe.

I will. Teterboro should be a lake, but we'll be right there in it most likely.

  • Directv has a channel dedicated to Sandy coverage. Been watching and this is phenomenal from a weather nerd standpoint. However, I can't imagine being one of the people in it. T&P with them.

My cousin and her family, along with some of my extended family, live in or around Dover, Delaware.

Power is now out in Princeton. Getting a little worse - wind/noise combo.

  • My sister used to live in Battery Park (right across from where the towers once stood), and the building she lived in is a block from where Jim "Dream Job" Cantore is reporting from. That is wild if the water crests as high as they are saying. I lived there a few months, and that is crazy to think about.

The hotels in Times Square all have generators. They will be fine and probably enjoy it.

  • Gerry, hope she stays safe. Without getting too "weather nerdy", this is why I was totally against the National Hurricane Center reclassifying this "hurricane" as non-tropical before it made landfall. What does that mean in non-meteorological terms? It means that when a system loses its core (warm convective center), you can no longer classify it as a true hurricane, even though the winds associated with it and the damage will be the same. This is semantics by NHC and so instead of having hurricane warnings issued along the coastline inland, you get high wind warnings. Unless you’re in to the weather, people are more likely to take that change as a "downgrade" and view it that the system is not a threat or that it has somehow weakened. I would argue that the system did not lose tropical characteristics and therefore should have remained classified as a hurricane all the way inland. This would have allowed local NWS offices to stress the hurricane conditions more easily using the hurricane warning as evidence that this storm was going to be dangerous (even inland).

As for your sister’s area, I’m expecting that winds will reach hurricane force (gusts) throughout the night and are already as you pointed out at tropical storm force as we speak. Definitely these sustained winds will create an environment for downed trees, power lines and broken windows. The good news (if any) is that I’m not expecting as much severe weather in terms of tornadoes, as is typically the case with land falling tropical systems. That is because on the back side of this storm, there exists a huge trough that is pulling in much colder air in to the core of Sandy and over time this will create some impressive snowfall totals on the western side of the storm and to get tornadoes, you need a "tropical" airmass to be in place.

  • I have two buddies and their families that live in Montclair, NJ, not far from Princeton as the crow flies. I was on them all week to stock up and get ready. They live in a really old house too, I'm really worried for them - I tried to call them about an hour ago, no dice....

Not a problem...the storm is just about to make landfall in the next few minutes. Your sister is northeast of the center of circulation, which is why she continues to experience the high winds. That unfortunately is going to continue through the night and probably increase in the next few hours steadily as the center gets closer. By the time this is finished, I'm not sure people will recognize Atlantic City. That's how bad this is right now. There will be a ton of criticism and rightfully so that the NHC decided to play "weather classroom" with this storm, instead of doing the right thing for the sake of people in harms way and ignoring the “meteorological” side of this and issuing hurricane warnings, as this storm will clearly cause widespread damage along the coastline and inland up to that level .NYC World Trade just reported a 90mph gust and that's well away from the center, so this is a very dangerous weather event going on for sure. My thoughts and prayers go out to your sister and family tonight.

FYI...not sure if you watch it or not, but Joe Bastardi (Hurricane Expert from Weatherbell) will be on Sean Hannity tonight at 8 PM to provide the latest information/updates and what he expects the impacts will be along the path of Sandy.
