My Top 5 Most Improved 2011 Commits Since Last Season

  • Here are five members of the 2011 class that I think have greatly improved over the past year...

    1. Kendall Thomspon
His body has really undergone an impressive transformation. His weight is about the same (225 pounds) but he dropped some body fat and added muscle. He was always instinctive, but his lean frame has made him quicker and helped his burst to the football.

    2. Quincy Russell
He looks like he's focusing all of his energy on football rather than two sports and it seems to be paying off big time. I'm impressed with his work ethic and he's got good intangibles. He'll be a kid that Mack Brown and staff will love having in their program.

    3. Joe Bergeron
Can't state enough how overlooked he gets, simply because most people tend to write off fullback prospects (even though he's the nation's best). He's always had great hands but like Kendall Thompson he's really dedicated himself to being in the best shape he can be in and it's only enhanced everything he brings to the table - including his blue collar mentality.

    4. Cedric Reed
Here's another two sport guy who I think will get better as he makes the transition away from the hardwood and onto the gridiron full time. He's another one of those guys who goes to a small school that doesn't have the S&C programs as the other big schools, but he's put in the time on his own to keep his body lean and he looks primed for big things this fall.

    5. Garrett Greenlea
It was a tough call for the last spot between Greenlea and Josh Cochran, but I'll go with Greenlea. I love that he spent his summer working out and taking college classes so he can enroll early at Texas. He's added 75 pounds to his bench max over the past year and continues to improve on his flexibility at just under 6-7.

  • good stuff Jeff.

    Xcoachtoo

  • Great info

    MBarnett

  • Thanks for the info. Great, great class we have committed.

    Micalynn

  • Nice list Jeff. Greenlea is going to be a Leonard Davis type player in college. He is very underrated in the many databases, but the guy is a beast and he will be starting for us next year.

    hooke_dup

  • Greenlea is taking college courses before his senior year of high school? That's pretty good for anybody, but especially unusual for a elite football prospect.

    Sessamoid

  • One of my best friends coaches in Klein and said he couldn't believe the size/flexibility combo on Greenlea.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

  • Steve Edmond wants to be on that list. Just got off the phone with him and he said he is at 240-pounds and in "great shape". Played at 235-pounds. Ran 4.7 at Texas camp, wasn't happy and worked with a speed coach after that and has run in the low 4.6's.

I'll have a write up on Edmond in the morning.

His goal is 200 tackles this year. Not sure I've ever talked to a kid with that # as a goal. Then again, how many ever had 182 tackles in a season as a junior.

  • 240 and still in hs, does he have a chance to remain at lb? at that size he sounds like a buck or de.

I think he's a 250-255 pound hammer at ILB, but I guess you can't rule out 'buck'. Think Kendall Thompson is a better bet at 'buck' right now.

  • Gerry,

Are you sure that Joe Bergeron will be a fullback? His dad posted a few times on OB and insisted that his son was not going to end up as a FB at the next level.

I think he's an FB all the way, but with versatility to play in an ACE formation. A RB, 7-8-yards deep, don't see it.

  • I'm hoping if we see something like this one month into the season, that Sheroid ends up high on the list. I really want to see what he puts down on the film this year.

    Gerry,

Joe's mom said they were told H-back all the way, not RB. Not sure why she was took such offense to the term "fullback," but I think that's what pobo was referring to.

    Didn't Edmond start pretty high?

If he's "improved" that much, very impressive.

Nice feature and yes Jeff, think you are right on Joe. Really looking forward to what he can bring to the backfield.
