More freshman talk

  • Some think Jackson Jeffcoat is the top freshman right now. Mike Davis second. Hicks right there too.

As talented as Trey Hopkins is, the move to guard may take a little time. Often underrated and rarely talked about, the steps are different at guard and Hopkins has always played tackle. Just needs time to adjust, but will be very good.

  • Seems we have a lot of bodies at Guard, have guys like Porter/Ashcraft not showed well enough to keep Hopkins at Tackle?

Is Mitchell going to hold up at Tackle or is he a bleed for the program guy for Mack?

Porter is the back-up at center or that is where I think he is still working. That is a good spot for Porter. Closer to the ball the better for him (doesn't have the foot quickness to play outside). He had good reviews last spring.

I thought Ashcraft's body looked improved in the two open practices. I think he has to be a little quicker, especially pulling in the run game.

  • Gerry --

What are your thoughts on Hopkins being cross-trained? Natural LT's are so hard to come by...I am surprised that we don't just let him work there full time.

  • Jeffcoat and Mike Davis will be freshman AA this year.

    There, I said it.

I think Hopkins needs to be the 3rd guard to get all of the best linemen on the field this year.

The play of Paden K. plus the injury to Tray Allen has paved the way IMO.

  • Gerry,

I'm not surprised about Jeffcoat, but I was really impressed with Reggie Wilson as well. There's gotta be some big time buzz on him, correct?

Oh yeah, he's just not technically where others are. Wilson has future 1st rounder written all over him. He will have an Orakpo type body/look in short order and he is very, very quick/explosive in short space. It's all about development, but he will play this year without question.

  • Is it Hopkins' lack of height/arm length that keeps him from being a tackle? He certainly has the feet to play the position.

Not at all. Hopkins has a terrific wing span. I would guess 6'9"/6'10". He can play tackle, I think right tackle, but I think the need this year may be at guard. I could be wrong, but it all depends on Tray Allen's health and the play of Ashcraft.

With Texas running a lot of counter, the quick, agile/ athletic guard becomes very key. I think Hopkins could be terrific there too. great thing about him is his versatility. He could play right tackle, guard or be one hell of a center. Cerebral, long arms, quick feet and will be 6-4, 300 by the spring.

protection-wise, guard is more complicated as well LT. LT is typically the easiest position to learn assignment-wise. The LT is almost always covered where guards are both covered and uncovered which impacts assignments.

Good' to hear he is doing well though.

  • Talent at defensive end right now is just obscene. I can't wait to watch these guys in action.

Appreciate the insight. Didn't know that.
