Mods -- Why wasn't Gray ever considered for the DC job?

  • Honest question...does anyone have any insight why he wasn't ever more seriously considered any of the numerous times our DC job has become available?

  • My 2 cents, but I think Mack wanted someone with current collegiate experience. The NFL is still a pro-set dominated league. Some teams (NE, GB, etc) have adopted spread principles, but most clubs are still running pro style offenses.

I think Diaz brings a lot of the same philosophies that Will brought, which have been proven to be effective against the spread attacks that are so common in the Big 12.

Not saying that Gray couldn't have schemed for those types of offenses, but he doesn't have that experience on his resume.

I was really excited about getting Jerry in as a DB coach because he could have eased back into the college game and would have been ideally suited to step in once Diaz takes a head coaching job (likely inside of 3 years).

Jerry Gray was a popular former letterman who had openly made known his desire to be the Head Football Coach at Texas, it really isn't hard to figure it out.

This has always been an absurd theory. There is literally no scenario where Jerry Gray could exert any kind of pressure to usurp Mack Brown from his head coaching spot.

We just lost a DC that was a cult favorite among our fan base and was in line to take over for Mack when he stepped down. There is no way that Gray could have presented more of a "threat" than Will Muschamp did.

  • Jerry Gray bailed on us at a critical time and it is hard enough dealing with losing him as a position coach. Losing him as a DC would have put us in a worse situation than where we are now. We also don't know if he is any good at recruiting. He just hasn't had any track record and probably never will.

  • Timing was off. Muschamp was named Florida HC on December 11. The Seahawks season didn't end until January 16.

  • We got a good coach in Diaz...time to move on....enough with the speculation

  • Gray leaving at this time is not good for Texas, Gray even acknowledged that.....time to forget him He made a commitent and didn't live up to it, simple as that....glad he wasn't offered the DC job

  • +1...+2.....+3.... All these guys that think he "just had to take care of his family" in BS. "Offer I couldn't refuse" :"Taking care of my family"..... Those are the statements guys make to rationalize their lack of character......Been on the job just long enough to take the price tags off his UT knits..;.... Can you imagine the stink if Gray had taken the DC job? All this crap about not burning bridges.... Give me a break....... Can you imagine this guy taking the HC job a few years from now , and then lurching for an NFL job????? Gray wants to be an NFL headcoach........ No problem. Mack thinking he could hire this guy to be a college DB coach is infintile.........Connect the dots........ Sorry guys.....Mack put together a geriatric staff over ten years, then suddenly figured out how to put together a dream team?...... Even a blind hog finds a few acorns now and then....... Love the new coaching staff, but these guys are here because of the institution , not Daddy Mack.

I'm guessing they are real busy breaking a bunch of offer and commitment news with the Junior Day.

I'm thrilled having Diaz as the DC. I'm happy that Jerry, a fellow alum, is also doing good. I think we'll be fine.

  • I certainly am not in the crowd thinking Gray "owed us nothing" (can't believe I heard that)

But I don't think he's leaving "lacks character", he had to take this offer.

I'm only upset that I thought he could have taken it much faster and it appeared he left TEXAS twisting in the wind.

It was bad timing, not all his fault and poor handling

But he had to take the offer.

  • I heard Mack had concerns that Jerry Gray deep down is an NFL guy and that he may flake out on us after just a couple seasons...

  • There were multiple reasons why Mack never truly considered Gray for the DC job.

    * Being a DC in college - what you have to defend against - is somewhat different than the NFL. The personnel and ability of personnel is very different, too.

    * Gray was in the middle of a NFL season and didn't want to wait to hire his DC.

    * It had been 15 years since Gray coached in colleges.

But, I actually think Mack did consider Gray for the DC position, he considered a lot of people, but decided on someone else.

austinr, not a flame, but for me, the mention of a writer for the AAS discredits even more. imo the Statesman has gone down hill dramatically in the sports reporting arena.
