Mizzou running game vs defense

  • I think everyone knows by now that Mizzou's RB Josey is fast, fast fast but i fully expect our defense to be able to stop their running attack.

    1. He is not a good between the tackles runner, which are the ones we struggle against.
    2. Our linebackers are fast enough to keep him sideline to sideline
    3. I expect to see more Mykkle Thompson due to Gideons lack of speed and if Gideon is being Gideon by taking bad angles we're in for a long day.
    4. Hopefully they'll have Monroe in the role of Josey during practice in order for the defense to see that type of speed.

What do you guys think? If we keep the big plays down i think we can handle Mizzou

  • you do know that their QB can run, right?

  • I am aware of that, but I'm not as threatened by him as i am Josey breaking 40+ runs like he's been doing. I have watched some games and parts of others and i feel that our line can get in the backfield to stop the read option, which Franklin is almost as bad as fozzy handing the ball off.

  • Missouri is dangerous because they are able to throw the ball better than Texas. That could be the difference in the game. I am probably in the minority in that I believe Texas is closer to being effective in the passing game than most. But, Ash will have to make plays this week throwing the ball. The Tigers pass defense would be a opportunity for Ash to have a good day.

We won't see less of Gideon unless he gets injured, why I don't know

  • The long run burst through our line is what worries me. We have done good since OSU but it only takes one or two to flip the game. Guessing, I think we are going to see more of the WCO that Harsin ran against Kansas. Spread the defense horizontally with short passes towards the side lines and run up the middle, move the ball, with a few deep shots thrown in here or there.

  • This will definitely be a good test of the defense. Franklin can run and he can be a very effective passer when he gets in a groove. Add Mizzou's running game to the mix and we will really get to see if the Texas D is deserving of the high ranking it's receiving thus far. I have a lot of confidence in our D based on what I've seen so far. If we can consistently get to Franklin, I think we win handily. If not, it may be a long day.

  • They're going to have some drives on us, and get points. We'll have to hold them to FGs, and answer scores ourselves.

They're a lot better against the run than KU, Tech, and maybe even OSU. MIzzou played good run defense vs. OU and OSU, and I'm concerned about us not being able to sustain drives, especially in the first half.

  • Missouri is good on offense. They're not great.

Josey is a tough-nosed runner who is better outside than inside.

Franklin is a streaky passer and a very good athlete. If Texas can contain Franklin with the ends - Jeffcoat and Okafor - then I think Texas stands a real good chance of limiting Mizzou on offense. I would assume we'll see a lot of the under look Texas used against Oklahoma State with Christian Scott on the play side with underneath coverage and tackling ability to help against the quick outside passes.

    I agree with this.

Texas could win by 20, lose by 20 or it could be a nail biter. I think this is one of those games where you have to see how some things play out. See which players make big plays.

I really like where Texas is headed right now, the confidence they're playing with and the identity they're building.

Texas needs turnovers and they need big plays.

OU and OSU are not good running teams. They do it enough for it be effective and for it to work for them, but I wouldn't put anything into the fact that Mizzou played good run defense against those teams. Baylor just put up almost 300 on the ground against them, and they're not even considered a running team IMO.

Gideon is in there because he knows all the alignments and defensive calls. Those young CBs are athletically good, but still need guidance and experience. What Gideon lacks in athleticism, he makes up in knowledge of the game that allows the others to be ready for what's coming and be better at their positions.

Without that, he would not be starting. Question is, who will be that person next year in the backfield if Vacarro goes Pro?

I would love for this visit to Columbia to turn out like the last one. We were expecting a close game, and a rout broke out.
