Missouri adjusting to stricter academics in SEC

  • I can hardly keep from laughing. LOL !!!

Mizzou adjusting to tighter academic standards in SEC

University of Missouri officials are discovering that the move to the SEC will also mean some significant changes when it comes to academic requirements for athletes.

  • Well at least they have standards in the SEC. Actually following them may be voluntary.

  • "Mike Slive said, 'Working in the SEC is a privilege...if you knowingly break NCAA or SEC rules, I hope you get fired. You don't belong in the SEC,'" Scogin said. "Then he shut the door and the meeting was over."

This has to be a joke.........right?

  • You know on the way home from school today my 13 yr old was asking about DGB and academic requirements relating to UT and Mizzou.
I doubt Texas would have pursued him if he couldn't make the grade but this is funny as hell.
It emphasized my message of study hard if you want to be a Horn!

  • I might get drilled for this, but with Missouri and TAMU moving to the SEC, when it comes to academics, that conference actually has higher-rated schools than the Big 12.

After Texas, the Big 12, academically speaking, is pathetic.

The Big 12 was a strong academic conference in its original form. NU, CU, Texas, MU and aTm were all power research universities. The Sec had Florida and Vanderbilt. With the attrition in the Big 12, it is now Texas by its lonesome and the SEC has 4 of the top research schools with the addition of aTm and MU.

As an aside, I went to a Foundation meeting and Bill Powers spoke frankly about conference realignment. At the end of the day if Texas had moved it would have been east to the ACC largely because of the academics. The negative with the SEC in his opinion was the rampant cheating in almost every sport, both mens and womens.

  • There used to be a joke that anyone driving through Athens, GA should keep their windows rolled up since someone just might toss a diploma into your car as you were passing through.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

  • I speak Slive. Allow me to translate.

If you get caught, you are not smart enough to compete in the SEC. And if you do, I hope you get fired.

[Slive slams the door for emphasis, not noticing the casino chips and paypal receipts that dribbled out of his pocket onto the floor.]

No one would move to the SEC for their academics, but it might keep a school from wanting to join. It is irrelevant whether the SEC or the Big 12 is stronger academically. Texas is already in the Big 12. If Texas were to shift conferences, we would never consider the SEC because of the academics. It would not matter a whit if the SEC were stronger academically than the conference Texas was leaving. The SEC is not our standard. The Big 10, ACC, and the PAC 12 are all head and shoulders above the SEC. Academics will not be the primary driver, but some conferences - e.g., the SEC - are so lacking in academic prowess it would be enough to disqualify them.
