Mason Walters named to 2012 Outland Trophy watch list

    Texas Longhorns junior offensive guard Mason Walters has been selected to the watch list for the 2012 Outland Trophy, honoring the nation's most outstanding interior lineman, the Football Writers Association of America has announced.?The watch list of 71 players includes only tackles, guards and centers from both sides of the ball.

    Walters is a third-year offensive lineman who has started all 25 games at right guard for his career. He was named 2011 second team All-Big 12 (San Antonio Express-News) and honorable mention (Coaches). Walters started all 13 games at right guard in 2011 and started all 12 games at right guard in 2010.

    The junior from Wolfforth, Texas, appeared in one game at tackle and on special teams in 2009 before missing the remainder of the season due to a foot injury and redshirting. He enrolled in January '09 to take part in spring drills and was a prep All-American who was ranked as the nation's top center by ESPNU and the nation's second-best offensive tackle by Rivals. He earned eight letters in three sports as a prepster.

    Texas has had three winners of the Outland Trophy, including Brad Shearer in 1977, Tommy Nobis in 1965 and Scott Appleton in 1963. Three other Longhorns have also been finalists, including Justin Blalock in 2006, Leonard Davis in 2000 and Dan Neil in 1996.

    The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists to be named on Nov. 19. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner.

    The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in major college football. The winner of the 67th Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century, will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 6 on ESPN.

    The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 10, 2013, in Omaha, Neb.

  • Call me crazy, but I think if Donald Hawkins is an emphatic answer at LT he'll get more postseason run than Walters.

    I was about to post something along the same lines. Even EA sports is sleepin on Hawk.

    Cochran is by far our best OL. I cant wait to see what he can do being over 270 pounds!

  • I will throw this out there, but I think Hopkins will end up the best OL. Wait until you see him back at his natural position. Just wondering if I am the only one to notice that there is a Outland Trophy discussion and people are talking about multiple OL from Texas.What were the odds of that a yr ago

    I sure hope so. He was a Matador last year and our 3rd-4th best OL.

  • He is not tackle. He was completely out of position. I talked to someone how thought he was an NFL prospect as a freshman at guard. He has not backed off his assessment. I do trust his eye. Coaches knew he was a guard and thought he was the best they could do. Think Okafor at tackle and then the move to DE. (or i am high on orange kool-aid, but it is definitely one of the two)

    He didnt play Tackle exclusively.

  • started all 13 games at RT. I will make my bet on Hopkins as the best interior lineman. I hope Walters gets a little more consistant and makes it a real battle. time will tell..

    He played guard as well and was equally bad. He probably will be our best interior lineman, but that isnt saying much. Im ready for Flowers and Riser to step in.

    And btw, from last year patchwork barely functional line, to this year's line being outright good, to next year's line being just plain nasty, I think it's safe to say that Searles is doing some yeoman's work.
