Major Applewhite talks about Patrick Suddes

  • Major Applewhite was made available to the media after Thursday evening's scrimmage. Applewhite worked with new Director of Football Operations Patrick Suddes and feels the Longhorns made a good hire.

"He's been around the draft process and was heavily involved in player personnel at Alabama. He's been through quite a few guys in terms of evaluating personnel. He's been around that system of evaluating and recruiting players, and does a good job and works hard."

Applewhite then went a little further into what made Suddes a good choice.

"No. 1 he works hard. When the coaches are coaches you don't get to act like a coach, you go recruit. You're at the computer sitting working on the internet, Web sites and all of that. He's good at that. He's good about maintaining communication with high school coaches, working camps and clinics."

Running clinics and camps is going to be a big part of Suddes' job. From that standpoint Applewhite has first-hand experience how good Suddes is in both areas.

"Alabama has one of the best clinics in the country and he did a great job with that. He does a good job of getting recruits camps because Tuscaloosa is a hard place to get to. He'll be able to implement that system because he's been around it for so long, and we've got good coaches here who know how evaluate and recruit players."

With the personnel department expected to expand, Applewhite thinks bigger is better when it comes to Texas maximizing it's hires.

"It's man-power. The more people you can get the better job you can do. Now that we've got a bigger department we can push more things to that department and take work off of not only football coaches, but the secretaries and the football operations people."

  • Sounds like a good start. So long as roles are clearly defined and Texas avoids a "too many cooks in the kitchen" scenario, building a recruiting team seems like the only reasonable option for a program of this magnitude.

LHN - TX Football - The Suddes File

Didn't take long for Texas Football to find its first Director of Player Personnel. Meet Patrick Suddes. It was just 2 weeks ago that Mack Brown announced he was looking to hire someone to spearhead Texas' recruiting efforts. Suddes will do that as well as coordinate the Texas Football camps and High School Coaches Clinic.

  • Taken from today's quotes....gotta like his approach.

@ESPNHornsNation: Patrick Suddes: With Longhorn Network and everything else, they've got a lot in place. We need to build a machine." #longhorns

  • Good to know. Looks like a fantastic hire at a position of great need. This hire is a lot more important than some may think. The guy has great experience on two levels with Saban and is a hard worker. This is going to make our recruiting better from camps to smarter use of time in the field, and it helps our best recruiters have more time doing what they do.
    Thanks for posting Jeff.

If not "groomed," his handprints seem to be all over the program now.
