Macks replacement

  • Question for Gerry and Bobby, but any thoughts or guesses from others are, of course, welcomed.

Assuming Mack hangs it up in the next two years, who are some names Texas fans might want to keep their eye on over that time as possible replacements for Mack?

This aspect hasn't really been discussed all that much because Texas fans obviously thought they knew who that was, but thats completely changed. I know the more pressing concerns/questions are about OC/DC, but this is the bigger longterm question.

Personally, Gary Patterson seems to make the most sense. His connections to the Texas High Schools are already in place. He has had an excellent eye in his evaluations and he has been a talent maximizer. He appeals to me because he hasn't made TCU great through a Mike Leach type system, but instead, its been about getting the most out of his football players.

The other name I'm intrigued by is Harbaugh, but I think his long term future and desire rests in the NFL. That makes him a pass for me.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or opinions. Thanks!

  • As time goes on, the more I think Gary Patterson would be a terrific fit at Texas. He has the respect of every HS coach in Texas because of the person he is and the success he has had at TCU. He and his staff have evaluated extremely well, because they have had to not having the ability to go select from the top 20 in Texas.

He just knows the landscape, has the respect of the correct people and has proven he can evaluate and develop players and plays good defense.

  • And he is friends with Mack. It would make for a smooth transition.

My only question is how he would hand the politics of the job. He may be fine at it, I simply do not know.

  • Patterson is solid. Harbough would be my number 1, but I think we would have to pay him very excessively to make sure he didn't go pro. I see no logical reason why we couldn't offer him $8MM a year given that percentage of our overall revenue, but i know we won't.

After that, I would want Chip Kelly but he woudl be difficult to peel from Oregon too, without going over the top with money. Again, we should go over the top with money to get our guy, but for some reason in a department that profits in the $10s of millions, they act like 1s and 2s of millions are a big deal.

  • What about that Will Muschamp fellow?

    LonghornJeff

  • My problem with Kelly - and it is my perception based on some facts and some rumors - is that Oregon plays the street agent game. That would never fly here and not sure we want to be associated with that game.

Harbough would be solid. My preference would be for a coach with roots in the state of Texas - or he had a staff with solid roots in the state. I think Patterson would work but I am not sure about his management style. Does he get too involved in the X's and O's? The UT job will eat you up, especially going forward with the ESPN deal and the drive to keep revenue streams moving upwards. We do need a manager, CEO style of coach (IMO).

Maaaybe. But Florida and texas are essentially the same job. If he is sucvcessfull enough to warrant us looking in his direction, Florida won't let him get away. And he woudl be unwise to leave because if you have a good thing going there, there is no sense in chancing it.

Dan Mullin might be worth watching over the next 4 years. Kyle Wittingham from Utah as well is afavorite of mine.

there was a great series on barkingcarnival a while back on cheating. It basically said every institution cheats as much as they perceive necessary to leval the playing field. So teams with natural advantages that put them head and shoulders above do not mcuh or at all. Those in the next cut, do a little. Those in the next cut down, do a little more, etc.

Mack was once an assistant at OU. Do you think he knew nothing of, nor never bent some rules?

I don't know what "playing the street agent game" actually means. Does it mean paying street agents, or just dealing with them? I suspect there is a lot less paying and more accomodating of their wishes. Like showing up for camps or making facilities availabe. Little stuff.

  • Part of my family are big Hornfrog supporters. We play a drinking game everytime Patterson ties his shoelaces! 4 or 5 times a game. Anyone else notice and have a story on it. TCU to quote Mack is really really well coached!cheers

  • Playing the game means all of the above. When they show up for camps - and are paid for their appearance - that is part of the game. When kids from Houston start showing up at Oregon, and many of these kids workout with or train with certain people in the state of Texas, that is playing the game. When street agents are paid for delivering kids to make visits to campus, that is playing the game. None of it would be tolerated at Texas. Perhaps because we have so many built in advantages.

But we digress from the topic at hand. A suitable next coach. Interesting topic and one I hope we get to revisit soon, because I fear our program is sinking in the wrong direction.

What a spectacular fall from the top of the mountain....

It was just a poor attempt at humor on my part.

  • Thanks for all the replys. I don't think Chip Kelly is a realistic choice and doesn't make nearly as much sense as Patterson.

Obviously things change on a year to year basis...but Gary Patterson just seems to make a ton of sense to me. I'd be very excited if thats how things play out.

  • My only question with Patterson would be age but Saban took over Bama when he was around 56 so I can see it working. As long as they win championships I don't care who it is.

  • Keep your eyes on Dan Mullen. He has real potential.

I was and still am a huge proponent of Muschamp. I thought he would have done great things at Texas. With him gone now though there are a lot of other coaches who's ears just perked up a little knowing that Mack probably isn't sticking around much longer. Mullen is probably one of those guys. Over the next couple years I can see Texas, Bama, USC, Michigan, LSU and Georgia all coming open. There's going to be a lot of churning going at some major schools.

    maninblack1

  • I don't see Urban Meyer being out of coaching forever. I don't like all of his methods but I am impressed by his results. I wonder if we'd go after him if the timing all lined up.

This. As I said on another thread I am shocked he wasn't interviewed for the Florida job. He's going to get a bigger gig soon if he continues to do well at MSU.

  • I think that Gary Patterson, Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer would be cool.

I've been very impressed by Paul Rhodes every time I've talked with him. After the first time I met him I thought, "This guy could get me to take on a 240 pound fullback. I'd get run over, but he could get me to do it."

He should definitely be on the list to be considered as well as Paul Rhoads if his teams continue to improve.
