Mack's Biggest Mistake?

  • Mack the manipulator has tricked everyone that what Texas is going through is normal. He also has convinced the powers to be that making a change would be disasterous. He also had us believing that 10 wins in a weak conference where you have 6 gimmies (yr) are monumental. Well, I have always told people that you should be judged by conference titles. He has 2 in 27 years.
He is stuck like a bug in the rug. With coaching changes around the corner he may find himself alone trying to fix a problem he can't. A problem he can only fix by retiring.

I've been thinking about the state of Texas football a lot this weekend, trying to figure out how we got here from 2005. There have been a few moments that I keep coming back to as times when I could have seen the downward trajectory of our program but didn't. I wanted to list these moments/decisions, but I'd like to hear this board's thoughts as well on what y'all think has been Mack's biggest mistake with the program since winning the NC.

    1. The abrupt transition to a "power" run game in 2010. If you're going to move an offense from a spread passing game to a more traditional run/play action style, that should be done over time, first addressing the recruiting needs then gradually evolving into what you want. I think this played a large role in our offensive ineptitude in 2010, leaving us with where we are today.

    2. Naming a HCIW without a specific timeline. If Mack didnt have a clear vision for handing over the reins, then he never should have named a HCIW. It creates uncertainty within your staff/team as to who is in charge. Then you're constantly battling "retirement" rumors for the rest of your career, especially on the recruiting trail. This uncertainty within the program and it's perception have been problematic since 2009.

    3. "Selecting rather than recruiting.". I heard Mack make this comment soon after the 06 Rose Bowl, about how they were having to do a better job of "selecting" recruits rather than sell them on the program. It sounded great to me at the time, but looking back I've realized that I should have seen this as the first sign of Mack and his staff's complacency. Now that comment really annoys me and I think it's probably the biggest mistake he's made since 2005. He never truly cashed in on the recruiting opportunity he had after finally reaching the pinnacle.

    Thoughts?

    +1. Great post!

To me looking back, it is offering our recruits a year in advance. We stopped evaluating and started looking at the star ratings.

Mack's been talking about having the Texas offense centered around a "downhill running game" since '07.

After 5 years, he's still working on it.

  • Trying to be like other teams instead of being texas was his first mistake. He should have been more concerned about being texas than trying to be an SEC team. A running QB was what got texas rolling under Mack and he changed everything in one season. Thats too abrupt. He had dual threat QBs on the roster but didnt play them. Part of this may not be Macks fault. I think people are too quick to say "this is the year" when you are changing a philosophy. When is the year? I dont know. The OL and QB are not ready. I think you have the QB on the roster, but without an OL, hes going to get killed.

Then there is the whole no tackling in practice stuff. If youre going to be a smashmouth team, you have to practice that way. So, when a team like TCU or OU come calling with "lesser talent" that have been practicing that way for years, problems arise.

He also got cocky on his own success with Vince and Colt. I remember him correcting a reporter when asked about the OU/texas rivalry at the OU media days before the 10 season. He quickly said, "its texas/OU". He hasnt won a game against OU since.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

  • Spot on thoughts especially about recruiting to the needs of a power running team. A blocking "fullback" and strong tight end and center are basic needs for this type of offense.
Somebody should have said to Mack- have you lost your brain at the time.
