Mack Relationship with the Media

  • "Texas media telling us how horrible their relationship with coach Mack Brown. Makes you feel lucky to cover Mike Riley."

That's a tweet from the Oregon State beat writer from Corvallis. I didn't think there was a bad relationship at all. Have I just missed that completely?

  • Mack gets huttburt when these writers call it like they see it. He's also a world class bullshit artist, and not a single word that comes out of his mouth can be trusted.

He simply says what he thinks needs to be heard at any given moment. If it happens to be true it is merely a coincidence. The media here cannot call him out because they will quickly be cut off from information. I imagine those media members with any dignity have grown to disrespect him personally for the constant lies he makes them print.

Sounds plausible. Just hadn't heard of any animosity before.

Depends on the media...if it's Kirk Bohls or Chip Brown, it's well-deserved animosity

But there are issues with Mack & other media

+1........................very good post and would add that I think the media ,as a whole, should be harder on Mack.

  • Media-coach relationships work both ways. I remember Bill Parcells telling his rookies every year that "The media is not your friend. No matter how nice they treat you, they will stab you in the back the first chance they get."

It's an adversarial relationship, at best. Like any relationship, it goes a lot better when things on the field are sailing along smoothly. When they aren't, both sides get prickly, and things are less cordial.

In other words, yet another example of how tweeting the content of a private conversation rarely constitutes major news.

  • Do other coaches pull media credentials from th media?

Az, I get that you are a Mack homer. Mack is the knife in your orange tinted eyeballs. Me, I've had to sit thru one too many 60-20 blowouts at the hands of OU not want him anything but gone. I hate soft teams and that is what he has allowed to evolve. I attend minimum 8 games a year and am actually almost dreading re-upping for another year. Mack, be gone!!!!!

  • Would love a detailed response from Jeff and Bobby on the OP's tweet by the way.

  • First of all, no reporter should expect a coach to do their job for them or to even make it easy for them to do their jobs.

However, Mack and the Texas sports info department has made it tougher to cover the Horns than it is at other places. Little or no pre- or post-practice interviews, no practices open to media only, preferred access by LHN, often preferred access by TV media over print or Internet, etc. Add it all together and some in the media feel unwelcome.

I personally don't feel that way but I understand why some do.

  • The only thing that is preventing a resurgence of Texas football is the negative reports in the media. They are causing a downturn in recruiting. Blowout losses to OU are not the problem. The media is the problem. Is it any wonder that relations are strained?

This is obviously not reality, but I suspect that this is reality to the one person that counts, Mack Brown.

  • The UT SID department sickens me, like most of Bellmont Hall. The place really needs house cleaning, starting at the top.

    Rick Zoloft

  • As far as wanting to control the narrative, I think all coaches want that to some extent. But Mack takes it to the Pravda level in its hey day.

He hates the LHN because its ran by ESPN and not Mack. So he doesn't have absolute power there. He's also paranoid about social media. With the exponential growth of that and blogs, it's making it more and more difficult for Mack and the Bellmont Information Ministry to keep control of the message. So Bill Little's essays extolling mediocrity are looking more and more absurd.

  • Interesting - don't we have an entire network devoted to nothing but Texas sports? How many hours are Mack and the remaining staff required to provide content for that network?

Ask the Oklahoma media how they feel about Bob Stoops... that guy is a friggin wealth of information flowing. He would just assume they all line up and he could take a piss on'em.

Just ask Sumlin after Aggy get's their asses handed to them in the Cotton Bowl and everybody in the media is asking questions about "Johnny" playing golf with the Jonas Brothers, and binge drinking with Mel Gibson.

Bottom line - Who the Fock cares what the media wants?

I could car less what the media wants or what they think of Mack. I dont really care what you think or what you want. What I care about is sitting in the Cotton Bowl every 2-3 years and having to watch toothless gooner kick our ass 60-20 and then heading out to the midway at halftime having to drown myself in wax beer and Fletcher's corn dogs to try to justify the trip. Got it, Chiquita boy. You and your boy, Macky, be gone and none too soon.

You forgot the fans. They are part of the problem too according to Mack.

First of all - dooshbag! Mack is not "my boy"... I am just smart enough to understand that short of hiring Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban, or Urban Meyer this year, he is the only answer for the short term stability and long term success of the program.

I have been to one of the 60 to whatever games at the Cotton Bowl myself... I also watched the NCG against USC and the other NCG just 4 years later that Mack guided us too...

Mack told us LAST YEAR that he was going to bring this team back, and will compete for BCS bowls and NC by 2013. I look at what we return next year, and what everyone else in our league will lose, and am willing to let a guy that has proven to be able to take this program to the highest level and win there...

To consider listening to a bunch of internet idiots pitching the latest unproven candidate as our savior is reckless, and just plain retarded. Charlie Strong was the guy early... then it was Briles... then it was Patterson. None would have a friggin clue how to run a program like UT, and have had short-term speratic success in their current roles...

You don't like Mack? Deal with it! You don't like me? Go f--- yourself! I really don't care...

I'm gonna pull for the Horns regardless... I'm not locked in with Mack on anything. I am willing to wait and see if he can live up to his commitments next year. He did in 03 and 04 by winning an undefeated NCG in the Rose Bowl.

Not sure what a "Mack homer" is. For the record, I will continue to support the team, no matter who the coach is. I guess that makes me a "Texas homer," which I will proudly admit to being.

I just find complaining media members to be as irritating as anything going on inside the team. I also think the cowards who tell their little stories to their friends from out of state, in hopes that they will show up annonymously on Twitter, have very little room to pass moral judgment on others.

(BTW, this thread was started by an aggie, so give that some consideration, as well.)

Yes, that is pretty much it. The fan and the media. That is the problem. Well, and injuries. Injuries, fans and the media. Do you know what scares me to death?
