*****Mack Brown on the Connor Brewer situation*****

  • Here's a statement Mack just released that was sent to me from the University:

"We're aware of Connor's situation and are disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing. We've talked with his family and will continue to monitor the situation. Following the completion of the legal process, we will do what's best for The University, Connor and the team. We've always prided ourselves in our program's family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family."

  • Rough weekend for Mack. Part of me feels for him. He's going to take uneccessary heat for not being a baby sitter, just as he is for Majors situation despite the fact that most, if not all blame lies with Deloss.

Then the other part of me comes to the realization he makes $5 mill a year for doing jack shit, and my sympathy subsides a bit.

  • Seems I've heard that scripted statement before too many times. Definitely not a good day in Bellmont from a PR standpoint, especially with two recruits visiting.

I'm guessing you didn't intend it to come across like it did, but the one who shoulders all of the blame for Major's situation is Major, not Dodds or Mack. We don't know enough about how Dodds may or may not have handled Major's indiscretion with the BOR. I suspect we'll find out soon enough though.

  • What a clusterf**k going on this week at the 40 acres. Major, Brewer - now A'Shawn probably going to 'Bama and DD looks shaky (should've told the BOR - liabilties). The Belmont PR machine will overheat on these issues.

Or maybe not - it'll all blow over. Just don't know if there is any teflon left there to deflect any of this without some damage.

  • "We've always prided ourselves in our program's family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family."

Which family atmosphere is he referencing? The one where he tried to strong arm the school into keeping Cleve on his staff despite the guy being bad news and caught sexually harassing a staff member. The atmosphere where he kept the Major incident with a student trainer while Major's wife was 8 months pregnant under wraps for 4 yrs? Or is he talking about the atmosphere that led to 3 players mouthing off to APD prior to last season and 2 more players out drinking and getting accused of sexual assault days before the Alamo Bowl? Maybe he means the atmosphere that now has a backup QB getting and MIP and PI last night.

Sorry, but I'm a little confused as to which atmosphere Mack's referring to in his statement.

Here is just a random thought, does Dodds even go to BOR meetings routinely? It is pretty doubtful that the Regents are focusing on athletic matters routinely. The President handles all other matters and would have known of all high level disciplinary actions. Lots of noise about Dodds and he likely wasn't even in on the discussion on he women's program.

I agree, but I was thinking more along the lines of Dodds ensuring that the BOR was aware of the situation they were being updated on other personnel matters that could be impacted by Major's faux pas since Dodds was the one meting out the punishment. I don't know how the BOR typically functions, so Powers may have been the one responsible for making sure the BOR was in the loop at the appropriate time.

All that being said, I am finding it a bit difficult to believe that the BOR was, at some point, not made aware of what had happened with Major given the high profile nature of his position, his indiscretion, and the issues surrounding Bryant and Kearney. Or, this whole BOR meeting could be a PR move in what many perceive to be a grand plan to oust Powers. At least some seem to think that may be one of the motives behind it.

A prominent state senator is questioning the need for a rare Sunday meeting of the University of Texas a meeting prompted by the disclosure that Longhorns assistant football coach Major Applewhite was disciplined in 2009 for an inappropriate relationship with a student.
