No offense, but I'm guessing the OP is a Sooner or from another fan base. They'd all love to see Mack hang out for several more years. It's not like Mack hasn't had time to turn things around and unfortunately the issues in the past 3 years were all on his watch which started in 1998. He's done great things and raised the bar, but my opinion is we need a fresh start with new energy. We were on the right track by making Muschamp the HCIW, but that slam dunk hire is now leading Florida to a BCS bowl and national championship consideration in just his second season in Gainesville. My hope is we talk to Patterson. He does more with less than just about any coach in the U.S. and he'd absolutely cause Stoops and OU to take notice.

21-15 overall record, 11-14 conf record, & 3 straight losses to OU, including 2 straight national TV blowout losses is not spiraling up
Not sure if you realize it (actually, you probably don't), but your criteria of spiraling up would be appropriate for The University of Texas at San Antonio football team...it's certainly not appropriate for The University of Texas at Austin football program
It's clear Black Shipley, CTJ, JeezGuy & several others on this site were exactly correct about your acceptance of mediocrity for UT

So chupita doesn't want to get rid of Mack because we might miss on our next hire even though there are competent hires out there that could do great things with all the talent and resources we have yet he wants to hand the program over to a guy who's never been a head coach anywhere nor the sole OC at his own program?
I like Major but he's not ready. Apparently Mack doesn't even think he's ready to be our sole OC.

LOL! Well, he has still led Texas to the best winning % of any other program since he started coaching in Austin. Has won a NC, and directed his team to another one within 4 years of one another. You fail to look at the entire body of work and focus on only 3 years. Not sure if you realize that (actually, you probably don't)...
I would challenge you to name 1 other program in a BCS conference that has demonstrated a tradition of winning football games better than Mack since he started at UT. Just one other school that can hang with his record since 98... Just one.

Besides Saban, Harbaugh, and Meyer... I don't see a better option available.
Who? Art Briles? Charlie Strong? Jackie Sherrill?
Get real... other teams have the same "talent" and "resources" that UT does. I remember when we weren't even a conversation on the national level. I believe it was right before Mack showed up in Austin. And for 20 + years prior.

OU 1998 - Present = 153-42 (Stoops began @ OU in 1999; record @ OU is 148-36; add in OU record of 5-6 in 1998) 1 National Championship, 7 Big 12 Titles 98 Big 12 conf wins, most among any current Big 12 coach Salary = $4.3M
Mack 1998 - Present = 145-40 1 National Championship, 2 Big 12 Titles Salary = $5.1M

Here's one chupita. Bob Stoops at OU is 148-36 (80.4 winning percentage) since he took over at OU in 1999. He's one win shy of Mack. His worst season was his first in 1999 at 7-5. He's been to 3 MNCs, won one, won 7 Big 12 titles. And if you want to tack on 1998 to OU's program in this discussion, they went 5-6. So that means OU's total record since 1998 is 153-42. Mack is 149-42 since 1998.
