Longhorns to play two Thursday games in 2013

  • The Big 12 Conference announced its 2013 Thursday night game schedule today, as approved by the league's Directors of Athletics.

    The Texas Longhorns will play two Thursday night games during the 2013 season. Texas will travel to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State on Thursday, Oct. 3.

    The Longhorns will also reprise their annual Thanksgiving night game when they face Texas Tech on Thursday, Nov. 28. Game times and networks broadcasting the games will be announced at a later date.

    The other two Big 12 Conference Thursday night games will pit TCU facing Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sept. 12, and Oklahoma visiting Baylor on Nov. 7.

  • So, this was the trade-off with ISU for the LHN game? Am I remembering correctly that this past year's ISU game was on LHN? Seems like it.

    I asked someone within the admin a few years ago if Texas would ever host a Thursday night game outside of Thanksgiving and was told "Never" with no elaboration. Seems like there is less of a concern with going somewhere else in doing it though. Sounds cool, in any event. It also gives Mack Brown a built-in excuse for failure, which is nice.

    Iowa State was on LHN last season, yes.

  • The Big 12's TV contract with FOX and ESPN requires 4 Thursday games. This according to the TTech AD dept.

    Tech, OU, and TCU also being featured in Thurs. games.

  • Besides Thanksgiving, Big 12 Thursday games to include:

    TTech / TCU
    OU / Baylor
    Texas / Iowa St

    Big 12 is serious about putting out a quality Thursday schedule, not just relegating Thursday exposure to the Kansas v Iowa St games of the league.

    Give Iowa State credit; their kids were fired up to play a night home game on the national stage. Their staff did a great job. I felt like our kids we a little bit out of it for the first half. We needed our fans to wake us up, but with the mid-week game less traveled than we had hoped.

    With the short practice week we changed some stuff in practice; obviously that did not work out as well as we'd have liked. We, the coaches, take full responsibility for that. I've assigned Jeff Madden to look into short week planning best practices and we'll look at addressing this issue in the off season. Obviously the Thursday game isn't ideal, but with the obligations that the LHN has placed on our team, we have to do what's best for the University, even if we would have been better off playing on Saturday.

    You could have heard that straight from Dodds mouth as he is firmly in that corner. Too many bigwigs travel in on Saturday from around the state that wouldn't go in on a Thursday.

    Me, I'm not a fan of Thursday games. Usually an exposure game for the teams that needs a little. Maybe we fit that category now.
