Longhorns lose a big piece -- more on the RSJ news

  • This whole turn of events just doesn't make much sense unless something significant happened for RS-J to decommit. It sounds like Bohls has been told the reason for the decommit but he cannot comment on the reasons at the request of his source (and I understand that). But Bohls does appear to think that, based on the reasons given for the decommit, that RS-J will land somewhere else. Jeff/Gerry, does this decommit stem from an outside influence or did something happen on the Texas side of the equation that resulted in RS-J wanting to re-open his recruiting (or are you at liberty to even say one way or the other)?

Is this possibly about him wanting a shot at a QB spot? I've read he's going to play QB again for Sealy this year.

This is a very interesting take on the situation. I'm sure the Texas coaches made it clear to RSJ that Swoopes is the QB recruit for the class. If RSJ indeed wants to compete at QB and both aggy and LSU indicated that would be possible, then this scenario makes sense.

You will excuse me if I defer to Gerry & Jeff as to where a recruit will or will not land.

  • The basketball only makes sense for Kansas and Kentucky, but where does Cal into all of this? we just beat them in the bowl game amd were only going to get better while cal will have to deal with USC coming back to prominence amd Oregon already being there now. I cant say much about their basketball program since I don't know much about it. LSU makes sense football wise because of theyll most likely always be in the title hunt and the aggies sort of make sense because theyre closer to home.

Say what you want about Bohls, but his sources are usually pretty solid.

  • My question is this – how realistic is it for a player to play both football and basketball in college, at a school like LSU or Texas? To excel at either sport requires dedication and training. At Texas, (and LSU), the football season extends from August to Jan 1st, or even later if you make the NC. If you are a receiver it is important that you do the 7 on 7 and other drills with your QB in the summer, so even when football is not in season, training must go on. How much time does this leave for BB? If you are a good football player at a good school, you can, at best, hope to join the basketball team the first or second week in January. What are your chances of being good? If you devoted the summer to getting better in football, you probably neglected BB, and the pickup games and training that occurs then. If you devoted the summer to BB, then you may very well be shortchanging footfall. You must miss all of the Nov., Dec. basketball while you are still busy with football.

To excel at football at your position, you may need to "bulk-up" and put on muscle and weight. At basketball, depending upon position, that weight may be a detriment because of loss of speed. Etc. etc.

No need to go on explaining the problem as you can fill in the rest for yourself.

College ball is not like high school. When you get to college, and want to excel, it would seem to me that you pick one sport, and train as hard as you can to be the best you can be in that sport!

Don't we already have one project passing Qb, compared to JT Barrett/Cody Thomas committed this year?

  • LSU is a big player in this ordeal.... Not wanting to play TE is another... We have a long ways to go until signing day, but we have some ground to level out to get back in this thing...

I thought he was going to be a WR if he wanted. Are you saying that Texas coaches told him he would be a TE?

  • Holly cow, sounds like a PMS convention. Let's just remember, it is one player and even if he winds up at a Big 12 school, he cannot murph into two players on the field of play. If he does, one has got to leave 'cause you can't play with 12. I have grave doubts that one player can turn around or crater the program.

If he wants out and really has decided to go elsewhere, we have many opportuinites to compensate for the loss. Texas has receivers on campus, coming aboard in the fall to mitigate the loss of one pleyer in the 2013 class. Plus we have a really good WR prospect in Jake Oliver in the class. Hook em.

To be clear about this, I'm just asking. I'm not suggesting this is the case. I don't know, but I am curious about it.

We talking about the same Kirk Bohls?

I've read Gerry for 7 years or more, Jeff for 5.

Sadly read Kirk more than that. I haven't seen a day where Kirk knew something about a recruit, especially one not from Central Texas that Gerry and Jeff did not know.

If he "knows" anything, it's most likely because someone at the AA-S relayed Gerry Jeff or Bobby's comments to him.

  • Always a good sign when the high school coach has no idea what is going on.

"I can't say I'm real comfortable that this is going on," Sealy football coach Jimmie Mitchell said. "It was a little bit of a shock. We had a plan to visit a number of different schools back in March, but instead he decided to commit to Texas. Now, he's had a change of heart about seeing other places."

Top recruit Seals-Jones reconsiders his commitment to Texas

Sealy, Texas, quarterback Ricky Seals-Jones is backing away from his commitment to play football at Texas.
