Learning from last night

  • 1. The Alabama offensive line, as dominant as it is, would have been much less effective if McCarron hadn't a) proven he could complete the post corner against man coverage and b) tested them deep with Cooper. As good of a running team as Bama is, they still had to be successful throwing to set up the run.

    2. I don't know that I've ever seen a better run blocking OL in college football.

    3. The Alabama defense, while very good, was not overly impressive from a scheme perspective. The Irish had a lot of good playcalls and had things open, they just didn't execute. I think Bama has great defensive talent but it only reinforces my belief that the spread is the best offense for college football.

    4. Eddie Lacy looked like a different running back last night than he has all season. The lateral quickness for a guy his size is phenomenal.

    5. The wide receiver Cooper is special because of the combo of deep speed and elite quickness/athleticism. He may be the best deep ball guy I've seen since Randy Moss. I know he wasn't "overwhelming" last night but I truly think Cooper will be incredible if he stays after it.

    6. Notre Dame almost had all of the pieces of the puzzle. I think their OL was good but not great. I think they lacked some speed in the secondary and I think their QB is not a complete player yet.

    7. I thought the two best players for ND last night were the tight end Eifert and the receiver Daniels. Also liked the other receiver Jones and safety Zeke Motta.

    8. Every single member of the Alabama OL will likely be starters in the NFL. They are massive and they are physical.

  • From what I saw, everything for Bama started with that O-Line. They just dominated up front.

  • Is Nick Saban good because he recruits well, or evaluates players well, or because of the scheme he runs? His teams are always competitive year in and out? what are we missing out on?

I love Calvin Johnson but I consider him more of a complete receiver.

90-percent players IMO. And he deserves credit for identifying and recruiting them.

On the field, he doesn't do anything fancy. But he coaches them up extremely well. Very basic football really.

  • Saban has consistently recruited AND developed a great offensive line. That's where football games are won and lost. It's been one of our biggest problems.

    Yes

  • I saw an ALA team that said "we're gonna do whatever the hell we want...& there's not a damn thing you can do about it..."

The hardest hit McCarron took all night was from his own C when they were arguing on the field

  • Texas unfortunately has not been able to control the line of scrimmage.

Also, he demands perfection & does not coddle his players - no entitlement going on at Bama

There's really not a position he hasn't recruited and developed well. His linebackers have been phenomenal.

I agree with you about the offensive line play. The last time I saw a group that dominant was ironically Notre Dame in the 87-89 time period. I remember teams putting 8 and 9 in the box and it didn't matter, their oline dominated the point of attack.

One other thing, the Alabama quarterback is doing a pretty good imitation of a guy on his way to the NFL. Good accuracy, throws the ball well short/mid/deep. Makes the right reads.

  • I also think there is a lot of credit that should go to Bama's OC. He dialed up a great offensive game plan, one that was very diverse and kept the Domers D off balance all game, IMHO.

Bobby, you said for several years we were making mistakes on recruiting O line. It appears to me we are doing a better job last couple of years . Would you agree with that?

  • Those kids take on the attitude of their HC. You saw that in the exchange between the QB & Center. They both were still competing when the game was essentially over. Nico Johnson said he was made because they felt they could have shut them out.

And they look huge compared to ours, and run faster, and are way more aggressive getting after it in the running game. Alabama has huge players for their positions all over the defense.

    "90% players"
hmm.... Bobby, agree they don't do anything fancy scheme-wise, but he and his staff are great technicians. Bama's D was in position most all night and they tackle extremely well. Their offense may be "simple" but the execution is precise and that is coaching. "90% players"..not imo.

    Yes, I believe so.

Guys like Estelle, Riser, Perkins and James, those are the types you need to recruit. I don't know if they will turn out, no one does, but they are so much farther ahead athletically and with physical potential, that it's night and day.

I think the difference between Bama and Notre Dame last night was almost entirely on the players. Both of those coaches have sound schemes, coach well and had good gameplans.

    9. Oregon is probably the second best team outside the SEC.

    10. Texas still does not have anywhere near the beef up front to be able to compete for a NC in 2013. Shocking the disparity, really.

  • Bobby,

Would love for you to probe your sources to see if Alabama and A&M might have actually done Texas a favor by arousing the administration and BMDs that this program is far behind, and needs a sea change.

    9. I don't think so. I don't like their defense. And I think their QB is just ok. I think Darron Thomas was a better fit for that system.

    10. I think the OL is coming. These guys are elite. There isn't a Darius James every year in the state of Texas. Same with Estelle. I want to see if Ridgeway pans out, and if Texas signs A'Shawn and Billings before commenting on the other side of the ball.
