LHN endures growing pains, Dodds hopeful distribution will grow

Hate it. Speaks volumes when your team/recruits are more worried about what they'll wear than how they'll play.

Gotta look good to play good.

It's not really a point of looking good, it's just "change". All uniforms look good.

But anyway seriously? Half the players are inked up to the point of looking dirty.

A different color on a uniform will polish the turd? Please.

What strategy do you recommend for a product to which we have sold the rights to another entity? Like it or not, it is ESPN's to sell at this point.

The world is defined by those who go out and take it. I recommend a scratch-and-claw strategy. Treat it like a street fight and get medieval on the work needed to get broad distribution. You are offering the Clayton Williams Theory to which Dodds seems to also be subscribing and selling. I would prefer not to see the outcome of a decade of fruitlessness as inevitable, but if you wish to lie back and enjoy it, have at it, man.

I have the LHN, but I am utterly indifferent towards the programming due to the state of our athletics program. Perhaps I will tune in to catch some baseball, but otherwise I'd rather not watch them polish the turd for most of the day.

This is where I am. Haven't tuned into the LHN since the OU game. The state of the athletic department disgusts me.

ESPN might be in charge of distribution, but it was Deloss who caved so quickly and totally to the B12 and NCAA regarding high school football. And the biggest, loudest complainer, Missouri, left the conference anyway. High school content was clearly a major part of ESPN's initial distribution plan and Deloss gave that up far too easily.

Sorry, no way Dodds was going to let the LHN crash on the rocks of high school sports. That would have been dumb.

I think ESPN could fight that legal battle and win it, but this apparently is not the time.

The LHN is awesome. Don't see how Dodd's can be blamed for distribution issues. The potential is through the roof. It's definitely going to pay big dividends in all sports recruiting. "Hey, stud baseball player's mom - want to see almost every game your son plays - send him to Texas!". Same with basketball, football, softball, swimming, tennis, golf, soccer, tiddlywinks , etc! Coaches shows, player interviews, ex players coming back to campus, etc. It's all a recruiting goldmine. Plus, don't forget he academic side. They show everything UT. It's only going to expand. It's our own network! Patience, patience, patience. ESPN will figure something out.

What a wonderful world you must live in. Is Obama the president there?

  • as an alumnus of UT and fan of my alma mater's athletics programs, I'm big fan of LHN. Baseball coverage is awesome.

Interesting thought about ESPN fighting a legal battle for high school sports. Texas could claim they have no influence to stop ESPN to the Big 12.

They probably could have had they did what ND and NBC did. Right now, NBC can show any high school game they want with a ND recruit in it and the NCAA couldnt say anything about it.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

So can Fox Sports with OU recruits.

This is why I think the landscape has changed enough for Deloss to push back against the B12. Fox Sports shows high school games. Fox Sports is also the OU Network (and OkState, and TTech, etc) during its branded segments.

  • I got it when Uverse signed on. I initially watched it all the time. Now I only watch it if a UT sport I want to watch is on. The programming is just not that great, as there is only so much content the university can supply.

I think the idea and concept where great, but the reality is that no one athletic department needs its own network.

Who's yours - Ahmadinejad? What a miserable world you must live in. I know it's not cool to be pro-LHN on this board (which blows my mind) so help me understand. Name me one thing in my post that you disagree with and why, instead of making your cute little derogatory statement.

  • For those that say they watch it all the time what is it that you like?

Outside of live events (mostly basketball and football) only the All Access show is worth watching to me. Noe of the other programming is all that captivating. I don't even think the practices are all that exciting and don't tune in much anymore for them.

The problem many have with LHN is the football games being placed on there. It was never meant to be a network to televise 25% of the regular season games on it.

Fair questions. Let me start with your last question. You're right, it was never meant to televise 25% of the games. It was my understanding that the LHN would only pick up games that weren't picked up on other channels like in basketball, baseball, and all other sports. The LHN ensures that 100% of all games of all sports are going to be on TV. Pretty sweet IMO. Obviously, putting 25% of football games on the LHN is a marketing ploy designed to get fans fired up and put pressure on the big carriers. Like it or not, football is the only sport that gets fans fired up enough to actually pick up a phone and call their carrier and ask for the channel. I did it and I know lots of other fans did too. It worked with uverse. Hasn't with TWC - yet.

Personally, I like just about everything related to men's sports. Coaches shows, player interviews, assistant coaches interviews, practices, etc. I used to take off from work and go watch practice live! Now I don't have to. The Classic Games are fun to watch - we always win! I got into Women's volleyball during their NC run. I even found myself watching some professor talking about renewable energy in Texas. (I know, it's not for everybody.) right now, they're interviewing Mack at football practice.

I really think that once distribution increases, it's going to be a goldmine for recruiting. Kids will be able to see what their coaches will be like, what practices are like, and what the facilities are like from an early age.

Oh, and I do understand why people who don't have access are pissed. I just think the UT administrations hands are tied. ESPN obviously thinks Texas's brand is big enough to support it's own channel. I do too.
