LHN endures growing pains, Dodds hopeful distribution will grow

  • Longhorn Network endures growing pains, DeLoss Dodds hopeful it will be more widely distributed soon | The Daily Texan

  • Hope is not a strategy, but Dodds to old and stupid to know different. Every single thing this twit says at this point is a comparison to how other groups might be in as bad a shape as Texas is.

  • “It’s a normal thing and it’s just frustrating and painful, but it’s normal. In the end it’s still a good thing,” Dodds said. “I’d hope by football season we’d have another big [cable television provider]. But I don’t know that. From the conversations we’ve had with ESPN, I think they’re hopeful we can get another one before football.”

  • I so tired of this I don't care anymore. I just signed with DirecTV for 2 more years because I don't give a rats ass whether they have the LHN or not. It was a potential driver 12 months ago. It's not now. They are dead to me.

How's that for moving the needle? Your time is past. Get on with it.

  • Well, I guess no need to once again review and catalogue the fall and calamity this albatross idea has spawned, but Lord I wish ESPN would can this.

We can't get on with our rebuild and makeover as long as this thing remains floating around polluting the Longhorn landscape.

  • I have the LHN, but I am utterly indifferent towards the programming due to the state of our athletics program. Perhaps I will tune in to catch some baseball, but otherwise I'd rather not watch them polish the turd for most of the day.

Those that don't have it (98%) are mad at the world, and those that do have it (2%) are cooling off.

I happen to be in both categories (don't ask). Great production, high quality, but no lasting shelf value. This is what was wrong with the idea in the first place. The product has no lasting value. It's a dud concept with limited, repetitive, narrow content.

ESPN must really have money to burn, much to the peril of UT athletics.

  • Dave...I believe the subject line is off just a bit...try this

"Texas fans endure LHN pains, hopeful Dodds will go"

  • I have the LHN and NEVER watch it. I just flip right by it on the guide without thinking twice to watch girls softball or some fluff piece about Mack and his program.

What strategy do you recommend for a product to which we have sold the rights to another entity? Like it or not, it is ESPN's to sell at this point.

Fight with the B12 and the NCAA to allow for high school football and other events to be allowed to be aired. Instant new content in high demand in Texas and nationwide.

Leverage LHN's strengths while downplaying negatives (don't force extra football games to LHN).

ESPN might be in charge of distribution, but it was Deloss who caved so quickly and totally to the B12 and NCAA regarding high school football. And the biggest, loudest complainer, Missouri, left the conference anyway. High school content was clearly a major part of ESPN's initial distribution plan and Deloss gave that up far too easily.

  • The LHN is awesome. Don't see how Dodd's can be blamed for distribution issues. The potential is through the roof. It's definitely going to pay big dividends in all sports recruiting. "Hey, stud baseball player's mom - want to see almost every game your son plays - send him to Texas!". Same with basketball, football, softball, swimming, tennis, golf, soccer, tiddlywinks , etc! Coaches shows, player interviews, ex players coming back to campus, etc. It's all a recruiting goldmine. Plus, don't forget he academic side. They show everything UT. It's only going to expand. It's our own network! Patience, patience, patience. ESPN will figure something out.

  • I love the thing. Watch it all the time. It's really paying off in baseball season. The only issue I have with the way UT has handled it is allowing ESPN to show more football games than it is contractually obligated to show. It clearly has not worked as a tactic to get companies to jump on board and has turned fans against the network. The product outside of football games is great, and that is what they should sell to the fan base. The asking price is likely just too high.

Hell, the Rockets and Astros network in Houston which shows every game hasn't been picked up for over half of the city. The strategy of getting people to call and beg for networks just doesn't work.

  • you guys know how great it is to live smack dab in the middle of the largest city in the state of Texas and not be able to get the LHN

This looks to be Dodds folly

Even if it weren't a turd, a whole channel for one school is ridiculous. Just speaks of the "We're the Joneses" hubris that DeLoss has.

Thank you ESPN & the Longhorn Network, for not only failing to realize how an acronym works, but for introducing the black color scheme into the orange and white colors of the University of Texas, and for highlighting what a monumental dipshit DeLoss Dodds truly has become. Both he and Mack are past their expiration dates when it comes to being useful for the University of Texas. Hopefully someone discards them soon because it's starting to stink around here.

Hate it. Speaks volumes when your team/recruits are more worried about what they'll wear than how they'll play.

I enjoy watching the LHN but that is only because I love Texas. I don't see why fans of other schools would ever watch the LHN but if they got high football games and other content they might watch it. I agree with you that high school content was clearly a major part of ESPN's initial distribution plan. At this point the only way I see the LHN getting widespread distribution would be if ESPN forces it on carriers in order to get other ESPN channels and I am not even sure if they could do that.
