Knebel, Garrido very frustrated

  • After the game there was a very frustrated Augie Garrido and a very frustrated Corey Knebel.

The closer pitched three innings and ended up taking the loss in the 3-1 defeat when he gave up two runs in the 11th against Oklahoma State.

After the game Garrido was upset saying "We've pitched Knebel too many innings, and that's my fault."

Knebel said, "I wish they would decide if they want me to be a starter or a closer."

The Longhorns aren't thinking of starting Knebel, but they pitched him 7 innings against Texas Tech and three-plus innings tonight.

It was quite obvious after the game that Garrido was upset.

It's possible that pitching coach Skip Johnson made the call to leave Knebel in the game, and Garrido wasn't happy about it.

Knebel said he felt tired, but he didn't say anything to the coaches.

"They can tell when I'm tired from the way I pitch," he said. "I don't have to say anything."

Knebel said he will take tomorrow off.

For the record, he's not feeling any pain or any type of unusual discomfort.

I'll have more on this in the game story.

Augie should be upset and it shouldn't be with just the pitching. The game tonight was the second worst game I have seen this season.

    We need a BATTING COACH!!

  • I hate to knock Augie because he record speaks for itself, but one of the things he is notorious for is going to his best closer way early in a tied ballgame. Why go to Kenebel in the 7th tied 1-1?
Only way you go with Knebel more than 1 inning for a save is if you are up 2-1 in the eighth and you bring him in to get a reliever out of a jam. Augie likes to go with the ace closer early and then expects him to be stretched out for 2-3 innings. That is what you have setup men for. Get the lead first and then bring the closer in to close out the game.

  • I love stuff like this, thanks for sharing Alan! It's always nice seeing the player perspective, especially when unfiltered.

Is it just me or is 24/7's baseball coverage as good as / better than it's basketball coverage?! Not sure if that's a compliment to the baseball reporting or a negative towards the "non-Bierce initiated" basketball coverage (which as of late has gotten substantially better, thanks in part to new info to actually report on).

    BhamHorn

  • Baseball far more entertaining than basketball these days.....so if the reporting is equal that of basketball I would say rightfully so.

I too appreciate players unfiltered reactions. Keep up the good work.

Someone mentioned this earlier in the week ..............a major concern for the rest of the season is the lack of arms on the Texas staff. I don't worry about Milner, he has a rubber arm but the rest can't continue at this pace.

I can't remember a time when a Texas baseball player called out the coaches before in print. My guess is Augie is not going to react to that well............

Is he going to bat for us?

You really think it's the batting coaches fault?

And not to excuse the coaches in any way, but the quote,

"Knebel said he felt tired, but he didn't say anything to the coaches.

"They can tell when I'm tired from the way I pitch," he said. "I don't have to say anything."

Is very lame, IMO. Knebel, you're a big boy now. If you are tired, say so. Don't throw the coach under the bus.

I absolutely do think we need a batting coach! We leave too many people on base and then can't seem to bring them home. Some of the guys are standing there with their bats and seeing pitch after pitch and won't even swing the darn bat. I'd rather they swing and strike out rather than stand there watching the ball go by. Very frustrating!

The team average was up to .281 at the beginning of this series.

That's not terrible. It's not great, but it's not terrible.

Fine Alan, but being in the middle of our league is not getting the job done. If we want to exceed and be in contention for bigger and better things, then we need a batting coach!

Texas' batting average has risen 80 points since the inception of conference play this season. The middle of our lineup is having very quality at bats and showing some real power that was long thought to be forgotten with this years' squad. Our MO has not been power hitting, especially since we are in such a pitcher's park, but the development of our young team at the plate this year has been an absolute improvement.

I disagree with you 100% in that being in the middle of our league isn't "getting it done" in terms of offensive statistics. There is no worrying about being in contention for bigger and better things, as we are already in contention for those things. Omaha is an attainable goal EVERY year under Augie, and this year seems no different.

We're not Florida, we don't play in a field that's conducive to power, and we don't have the offensive firepower that they do. We also tend to lose our power hitting recruits to the MLB draft before they ever stop on the 40. That's the thing about college baseball, unpredictability; therefor Augie keeps an offensive game-plan that is immune to the changing dynamic of the game.

Good pitching, good defense, contact and precise hitting, and speed.
We call it Augieball, he calls it 5 national championships.

Coaches need to be smart. Players need to shut up and play.
