Kirk Bohls Upset With Mack Brown...

  • From ESPN...

"Monday night Austin American-Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls lit into the Texas coaching staff for its lack of shake ups to a 3-2 team during the bye week."

"Bohls writes that Mack Brown revealed a depth chart for Saturday's game against Nebraska with "absolutely zero significant changes" and "went on about business as usual" after back-to-back losses to UCLA and Oklahoma."

"What got Bohls boiling is the fact that Brown is underplaying his renewed emphasis on the ground game and playing Garrett Gilbert more under center, and is now shuffling through his fourth option at running back (D.J. Monroe) and junior Cody Johnson, who was named the unanimous starter in August, is now relegated to short-yardage situations."

"We do know that this Longhorns coaching staff -- rightfully celebrated as one of the best in all of college football for its work since 2004 -- has underperformed the same as the players, and many of the gaffes can be traced to the offseason," writes Bohls.

  • Usually disagree with Bohls, but not here, glad he wrote it.

  • Really not a lot to argue about . . . I think even the coaches may have had a tad of the poison cheese in the off season. I think he is correct in assessing that many of the gaffes affecting the team now occurred in the off-season.

Although, I do disagree with his presumption that Mack could have made some miraculous depth chart change that would have fixed anything. IMHO, the problems do not lie in the depth chart.

  • Just exactly what magic button do you think Mack can push via a lineup change to fix everything?

Everyone wants an instant fix. I just don't think it's in the cards. Nor do I think things are quite as dire as some make it out to be.

Now if we had a full back on campus that we can lineup in the I and run Cody all day long, I'd be happy with that.

Same here. Bohls is usually way off. Here I think he hit the nail on the head.

I agree with you that there isn't a whole lot they can do roster wise right now but if we drop this game to Nebraska I would hope the coaches makes changes and get as many young players experience as possible moving forward. All of our goals going into the season would be lost so might as well start preparing for the next.

  • I don't think there's anything they can do from a two-deep standpoint. The only two things might be a healthy Mike Davis and a different punt returner. Otherwise, it's just moving people for the sake of moving them and Mack is smarter than that.

That's right. Our RB situation aside, don't insult me by just switching names around so we can pretend all the problems are fixed.

  • I didn't really care one way or the other about the static depth chart, but I agreed with his concern about the "business as usual" vibe he got. In addition, the underplaying of the rhetoric we listened to all offseason about going under center and emphasizing the run game, taking the pressure off the qb after lessons learned in natty championship game etc., is aggravating. Now saying balance was the goal all along, regardless of how we get there scheme wise, is tough to listen to. I agree with Bohls on that, and while there isn't much we can do about (bc i also agree we are handcuffed by talent issues), I'm glad to see it addressed in his article and hopefully future questions asked about it.

    Richard

  • I always took it as a "we want to be able to run the ball when we need to" while others took it to mean that we would be converting to a power running game.

  • You know what, this staff (yes, even Greg Davis) deserves a little more latitude to get called out like this. Mack Brown doesn't owe the press a G-D thing. What the hell is he supposed to do? Spill his guts and go through a thorough and public review process with the media to make sure that everyone in the room is comfortable with the game plan? How about if we invite Bob Stoops and Bo Pelini along just to make sure they're cool with what the staff is thinking too?

Part of Mack's job in managing the media is to keep all these spell checkers (and us fans really) happy without telling anyone a THING. I'm not sure if he's required by the league or the NCAA to disclose true state of the players' injuries, but I wish he wouldn't, the same way I wish he wouldn't discuss supposed game strategy on upcoming opponents.

    I feel better.

  • Good job Bohls. The tough questions need to be asked and someone needs to point it out when they are giving nonsense answers and excuses. The internet media depends on access too much to make these points. Glad the paper can, as Bellmont can't ban the statesmen.

I agree though even if we pull off the win, we need to get far more reps for the young guns particularly at CB and OL since no matter how this year finishes, we lean on those guys heavily next year.

If the gap in production isn't too wide, I agree.

    Richard

  • Yup. All of the marginal SRs (MITCHELL, Smith, Earnest, Norton, Chiles, Kirk) should see reduced PT because the future is now. Even guys like Huey, Hix and Chykie should be losing reps to the young guys

It will be interesting to see what happens to PT post-Nebraska. An ass-whipping there is going to lead to very vocal demands for immediate and consistent PT for the next generation.

  • Bohls may get one rigth every once in a while, kind of like the blind squirrel, but Mack is a hell of a lot better coach than Bohls is a writer. If Bohls could write like Mack can coach he'd win a Pulitzer.

That is why I wanted GG getting more reps last year in blow out situations.

I agree, but kind of beside the point.

  • I wouldn't make wholesale changes, but I'd have someone else returning punts (Hales, Fitzhenry, Monroe), and I'd put Hopkins at RT and live with the results.

Agree. I may be ready to see someone else in there for Huey as well.
