Kabongo suspension reduced (quotes from Barnes, Dodds added)

  • Longhorn guard Myck Kabongo, who accepted impermissible benefits and then provided false statements about the situation, must sit out 23 games, according to the appeal decision today by the Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He already has missed 11.

According to the facts of the case submitted by the university, Kabongo accepted airfare, personal training instruction and then provided false and misleading information during two separate interviews with university officials.

As a result, Kabongo must miss 23 games for unethical conduct and must repay approximately $475 in impermissible benefits to a charity of his choice. This includes the 10-game withholding condition the university self-imposed as a part of its request to reinstate Kabongo’s eligibility.

Statement from Texas head coach Rick Barnes:
“Our thoughts now are with Myck Kabongo and his family. We feel for Myck. He made some mistakes early in this process, and he put himself in a tough position. That said, he was truthful and forthcoming when he talked with the NCAA.

We couldn’t ask for a guy with better character in the way he has handled this situation. From the end of basketball season last year and throughout the spring, he brought a whole different approach to our program. Despite what happened, he has been a great leader for this team and we will count on him to continue that as we move forward. When I talked to him tonight after the decision had been made, Myck’s thoughts were only about our team and our program. That is a tribute to Myck and his family, and it tells you everything you need to know about Myck.”

Statement from Texas Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds:
"We are glad this is now behind us and happy Myck will get an important part of the season back. I appreciate Myck's attitude through all of this. He has cooperated fully with The university and the NCAA and he has absolutely taken care of his business academically. Myck has grown through this experience and continues to be an important part of the team. I know he will continue to be that and were all looking forward to seeing him back on the court later this season. I’d like to thank the NCAA committee, a group made up of our peers, for their time and effort in this case.”

  • Has anyone figured out when he will be back?

  • Better than the entire season. This is huge news for the team and Kabongo. Now the team can move on and look forward to Myck rejoining the team for the 2nd half of conference play.

Feb. 13th against ISU he will make his return.

Just trying to be optimistic here...but the selection committee does look at how a team finishes up a year, so if we can just hang in there and win our share it is possible that Texas will look promising the last half of the conf. schedule and get picked for the tourney.

I feel better about the year now than I did two days ago.

    rosessmellgreat

  • This is good news for the next couple of years as we will have to play without Myck and we will gain invaluable experience in doing so. Unless we continue to show improvement building on the North Carolina win, we may not make it to the NCAA playoffs this year. Hope Myck comes back next year. If not, Jevan and Demarcus will be getting some invaluable experience - and maybe Papi in a pinch. Gonna be there. Gonna be watching. Hoping for the best.

  • So Trent Richardson drives around in a Cadillac SUV and gets nothing, but Myck gets 23 games for $475?

    That makes perfect sense.

And don't give me the "it was the lie" BS. The NCAA never even ASKED a question of TR. Or Lache and Oregon. And Cam Newton got nothing for admitting his father pimped him to schools

    So so so so stupid

Yep last 10, which is where Texas will be with the 8 regular season games, and hopefully a couple of Big 12 tournament games. Those 8 games will include 5 against teams that will be vying for the NCAA tournament in ISU, KU, KSU, OSU, and BU.

  • Seems like they came off the full suspension pretty easy, was this like when you are negotiating for salary and just ask for way higher than you actually think you'll get?

I don't think this is an official criterion anymore, although I always have looked at it as a bogus plug for not having any other reason for keeping a team in or keeping it out.

What they might do is consider Kabongo as they might an injured player. If they play well down the stretch, it will help them if they are in range of a NCAA spot.

  • MK put himself in a position to be publicly embarrassed & face a suspension from the NCAA

The Texas compliance office did not provide adequate representation for MK, did not notify Rick Barnes or any other basketball team reps prior to their conversations with MK, and did not help either the player or university during this process

MK made a mistake & received the relevant consequences...will the Texas compliance office face their own consequences for failing MK & the university? I think we all know the answer to that...the Texas compliance officials involved in this matter should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves

Just another example of the complete disaster otherwise known as The University of Texas Athletic Department

  • It will be very interesting to see if Texas gets a third year from Kabongo now.

He's not going to play 30-32 mins a game, and will have some rust in games - even though he has practiced.

He's missed valuable game experience for a PG that was looking to make the gains needed to raise his draft stock.

You certainly express the unobjective and bias viewpoint and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But for the sake of argument, let's look at the situation from a different perspective.

    1. Texas is king of the hill in college athletics. While true that fans are increasingly impatient and emphatically growing tired of poor results in the big-stage sports (football, basketball, baseball), it absolutely has a responsibility to avoid ANY perceived impropriety in its compliance actions.

    2. It is easy to pile on the compliance department who is ultimately responsible for processing and reporting infractions but there are too numerous examples of institutions whose same officials were deemed negligent in their objective duties to the institution and summarily a big part of the reason for sanctions.

    3. Rick Barnes and DeLoss Dodds may not like the outcome but the bottom line is the compliance department did its job. Would we rather a small infraction, in the scheme of things, lead to an army of investigators signing short-term leases in and around campus poking their noses in every nook and cranny?

I am not saying that our compliance department did not make any mistakes here. But risk assessment and conservative aversion seems like the strategy du jour for these folks given recent history.

Yes, it stinks that a $475 plane ticket and pursuit of career skill training cost Texas its star point guard for 75% of his sophomore season. But there is so much more riding on playing the NCAA compliance rules by the book if you are a Texas caliber institution.

I say lead from the front and maintain a separation of powers standard. Look what happens when you skate that line. The risk is high and everybody, including the NCAA investigators, would love to take down our program given the size of that cap feather.

Not an apologist for anyone. Just choosing to take the long view on this situ.

    Hook 'em.
