Just don't get it re: Monroe

  • The kid is lightning in a bottle and the closest thing we have to an elite college talent on offense, yet it takes 11 games to make a concerted effort to get him the ball? In a season where we can't get out of our own way on offense? The "he doesn't know the plays" argument is just absurd. Go back to 1995 and pretend Ricky Williams only knew Dive Right and Dive Left. You know what a smart offensive coordinator calls? Dive Freaking Right and Dive Freaking Left. Over and over again.

That was only because Newton had to retire, and Fozzy probably needs to as well.

Solid point though, another reason why Davis needs to be fired/retired.

  • And seriously, how hard is it to know plays at RB? See the hole, hit the hole/cutback/bounce outside, don't fumble.

  • You guys keep dancing around the obvious...if it's not on-field stuff, academic stuff, what else could it be? Why would Monroe be benched for the 1st half on KO's last week?

    mcb0703

  • I think it's simple. Davis doesn't like/trust/want Monroe.

Davis was asked point blank this week about DJ and off the field issues............he said that had nothing to do with his playing time.

If he's out for disciplinary reasons, explain it... don't say he doesn't know the plays. That's as dumb of an excuse as, "McCoy wasn't warmed up."

I know alot of it is coach speak... but wow, sometimes our coaches give Les Miles a run for his money in the dumbass category.

  • He knows the plays now.

I think it's just a matter of him being able to participate in the passing game.

Considering the simplicity of the routes and combinations of routes, Texas must have the most sophisticated blitz pickup schemes in the history of modern football.

I'm actually fine with that as an explanation. The passing game IS different at RB.

But that also sort of falls back to the awful game "plans" from games like Iowa State and Kansas State. Not to mention, the decision to move him from RB at the beginning of the year.

The Iowa State and Baylor game plans and offensive execution were two of the worst in the history of the program.

K-State was more in the lines of poor QB and line play to me.

  • Not knowing the plays = Big f-ing deal.

If Monroe doesn't know the plays, then you put him in the huddle anyways and have Gilbert tell what to do when he's in there.

The kid has got to get snaps somehow, someway.

  • We ran one play with him today, so the not knowing the plays may be correct; but that play was successful so I don't get it.

Not only was it successful, it was successful twice in a row.

  • I would love to see Texas run the play fake with Monroe on the zone play, then have him keep going on a wheel route down the sideline.

Get him matched up with a LB in coverage, even if it's just a decoy. It frees up the middle, and over the top with a safety.

Monroe didn't know the KO PLAYS in the 1st half last week?

You guys can believe whatever you want to believe...Monroe took a hand-off 60 yards against OU...we haven't seen that play since OU...& then averages 10+ ypc vs ISU & BAY...& then gets no carries until this week? & gets removed from KOR for Mike Davis for the 1st half last week?

And I'm to believe it's not disciplinary? As bad as this season has been for the offense, do you guys really believe Mack would keep any player (averaging 9.4 ypc for the season) on the sidelines if it wasn't disciplinary?

IMHO, this is nothing more than keeping stuff internal with the coaches giving their own spin to the media

I think the KR duties was for a combo pouting and seeing if Mike Davis might provide a spark there. Nothing more.

Like I said earlier, if they don't use Monroe in the passing game against A&M, then they are missing their last chance to go against tendency this year.

I won't be surprised if they don't but it's just bad to me.

  • What's not to get? We've been benching players who make good plays on offense all season long. Davis wants to win HIS way whether it works or not. There's really no other explanation for the disaster the offense has been this season.

Completely agree and it seems crazy to think otherwise.

  • I agree that it is coachspeak and keeping things internal. but heck, can that not do a little swing pass to him on the outside and have him beat only one guy? it is not difficult to design a play or two for him. heck, I would take a quick pitch to him and see what happens. blitz pickup? swing him out and dump the ball to him on a blitz. it is not that difficult.

Anything in the passing game - and I mean anything - would be a welcome addition to the game plan.

For Texas to win, Greg Davis is going to have to come up with something special because I think Texas will have problems covering A&M's receivers, backs and tight ends on D.
