I'm reaching here, but perhaps the lack of a statement is because Jerry does not want to put his friend Munchak in the compromising position of not getting his #1 guy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but only the media is reporting Jerry is the leading candidate (and quite extensively I agree), but Munchak could still claim otherwise to other candidates at this point.
Hey, I guy can dream, can't he? Either that or 1) Mack is giving Jerry time to think, or 2) they are both stalling so Mack can announce a replacement simultaneously with Jerry leaving. But I tend to agree with some posters, that there is not much to read into the radio interview this morning. The only definitive statements we will get are Tennessee hired another DC or Jerry is leaving. Don't think we will get a "he's staying" statement.
Anyone know of anybody who will be at this luncheon and can provide a full update?
Hope Jerry stays. Understand all the fan's emotional responses, but IMO Jerry Gray should do what he most desires for he and his family. Regardless of how that happens, he will always be Longhorn of great distinction. Let's be proud of him and treat him with the respect he deserves. Longhorn fans have long prided themselves as examples of fervent but classy passion. Now we have the chance to prove it, regardless of potential temporary hurt feelings. Best of luck to Jerry and here's hoping he is wearing Burnt Orange on the sidelines this coming season.
He had to know and address NFL opportunities in his interview. he was over qualified and had to give some assurance that that would not be a concern going forward. we effectively jettisoned Akina for him (if reports that Akina changed his mind and wanted to stay are true). Therefore he owes us not even interviewing this year. He owes us that, as I am sure we were very reluctant to even consider him, given this possiblity.
If he leaves, I say screw him. he burns his bridges. it is in poor taste to even consider this, given what must have been said in the interview. he gave up a lot, but so did we in taking him.
if he is speaking at the lunch, does that mean there could be a chance he announces then that he is staying?
It certainly improves the odds that he won't be interviewing with the Titans this afternoon!
Munchak has told more than one person that Jerry Gray is his first choice. Those people are both in and outside the Titans organization.
I'm a little bit shocked at the vitriol being hurled toward Gray when he hasn't actually done anything yet. I would expect that from aggies, but it's a little disheartening coming from fellow Horns. The guy is an alum and obviously a stand up guy from all that I've read about him. I'm sure this is a difficult decision for him and as fellow longhorns, I would hope that we would want to see a fellow alum succeed rather than hold him back from his goals. As a family man, I'm sure that one of his main (if not THE main) goals in life is to provide the best life for his family. How many of you are in a position to turn down a guaranteed salary of 1M per year? I'm not. Sometimes in life when you think you have things figured out, things change. It's not like Gray sought this Tennessee job out. It fell in his lap. He'd be a fool not to at least check it out and see if it would be better for him and his family. For all we know, he may be doing this interview as a courtesy to his friend. Either way, I personally wish him the best of luck and no hard feelings.
