  • Let's stop talking about how justified JG is in taking another job for a moment, IF he does. Instead, let's start talking about how a program as storied as the University of Texas can have a season like last season.....an offseason like last offseason, and then, just as our big recruiting push for next year gets ready to fire up, how we could lose one of our most beloved former players who just recently came to coach for us. How, after all of what recently transpired, do we not begin looking like a laughing stock compared to other big, historically successful programs. If Jerry EFFING Gray, who supposedly REALLY wanted to come HOME to Texas, can decide, before coaching a single PRACTICE, that he's ready to hit the road, no matter how justified,......who on G-d's green earth can we really expect to stay here and COMMIT to our players? There will ALWAYS be a greener pasture, won't there? Haven't we become a stepping stone to a better position for anyone? How many Major Applewhite's do you think we have on our staff now? I think anyone seeing us as a final destination school has to immediately evaluate their assumptions. I wish JG the best, whether he stays or goes, but face it.....if you have a corporate mentality in your hiring, expect a similar mentality from your hires. "It's not personal, it's business."

  • Of course it's business. But I don't think for a second Jerry Gray taking a higher-profile job -- and yes, a DC job at an NFL franchise, even a moribund one like the Titans -- means or says he loves Texas any less, or makes him any less of a Horn. It's a far better-paying gig, and just because it's Texas he might be leaving behind (MIGHT being the operative word) doesn't make him any kind of a jerk. Still a great player, still an outstanding coach, and I hope he sticks. But if he doesn't, good luck to him. I wish him success. And if he ever wanted to look the Horns' way again, hey, the door should be open as far as I'm concerned. Did he sign some kind of contract that says he wouldn't take another, higher-profile gig? I doubt it.

Either way, he's still a guy who can throw the Horns up without any shame, and he's still a Horn. Hook 'em.

  • Agreed. But he's got to do what's right for him, his family, his professional future, not what's right for people he doesn't know but who love the uniform he played for. Sure, I hope he stays, but I definitely don't think it lessens Texas as a viable -- a FANTASTIC -- place for another hot coach. You don't think there are a dozen hot defensive backfield coaches out there right now that aren't chomping at the bit now that the position's open again? It's fricking TEXAS. A guy left a DB position -- and an "assistant head coach" title, which to me is just that, a title -- to take a DC position at an NFL franchise. That s**t's gonna happen. I hope he stays, but if he doesn't, the next guy Mack brings in will have plenty of sizzle. And there are a lot of them out there right now hoping Jerry takes the Titans gig. Bank on it.

  • I don't think anybody here would be shocked to see both Harsin & Diaz leave for HC jobs in 2-3 years if they are as successful as we hope they will be. Many of us are hoping for Applewhite & Gray to take their places as OC & DC respectively. From there, many fans would like to see either Applewhite or Gray get the shot at replacing Mack when he retires. If Gray leaves after only 1 month on the job, I wouldn't want to see him as our HC some day. There would always be a concern about him leaving for an NFL job. Granted, there is a huge difference between leaving for a lateral job and leaving for a promotion, but the concern would always be there for me.

  • I don't think the position Jerry has/had/would-have-had with Texas would be a significant influence on whether or not he might be considered ahead of DCs whenever Mack decides to step down. As to why Mack wanted the guy he chose, I'll just accept that he has his reasons. Clearly Jerry didn't feel so disrespected that he didn't get offered the DC job that he wasn't willing to take that apparently lower job. It just meant the price tag was a little more appealing elsewhere. And maybe he's also thinking our young firebrand DC's gonna have his own head job in two years somewhere else, and that that will be the time he comes back to Austin looking for something else ... because maybe that's when Mack decides, hey, Jerry, it's your time now.

Who knows? Either way, Texas is gonna have a smokin' DBs coach. And next year's gonna be fun. Either way.

  • Hey, man, I got no more idea who they are. I'm just willing to bet that phone will be ringing -- with a buttload of incoming calls as well as outcoming -- if Mack finds himself in the DB coaches market again. We lost a guy to a DC job in the league. We're still Texas. Step back from the ledge.

  • While I have wanted Mack to hire Jerry Gray for the DC position since we let Reese go; Mack has concerns about Jerry making the transition to coaching in college. Some of those concerns are obviously legitimate, mainly recruiting. It isn't that Jerry is bad at it, but he is a wildcard at this point because we don't know if he is good or not. He only did it for 1 year at SMU & since they were just coming off the death penalty, it wouldn't be fair to judge his recruiting abilities based on that year. I hope he stays at Texas for his sake and ours. The Titans are a mess right now & I would hate to see Jerry put in a position where he can't succeed. I do wonder what sources the 2 tv sports guys are using to claim Jerry is solid to TX. I assume that they know better than to use Chip Brown as thier source. They could ask the meteorologists if Gray is staying and have as much chance of being correct.

  • Thanks. Now I just need to get Jerry leaving off my mind & fall asleep. I agree with your premise that DB coaches are probably already lighting up Mack's phone. We are certainly on short list of schools to be considered DBU.

  • I'm a noob. I wouldn't know how to do a smiley-face chestbump. Consider it done. I chest-bumped the computer. Now I need a new monitor. Thanks a lot.

    ExpatriaTex

  • Sorry, smiley faces aren't available on mobile but I am giving you the bump in spirit. Btw - if Jerry leaves, my money is on Mack calling Willie Mack Garza first if Willie hasn't already called him.
