Let's say Johnson expects to get legit playing time by year 2. Here are both Texas and A&M's 2015 DE depth charts.

Texas: Senior: Shiro, Juniors: Cottrell & Bluiett, RS Freshmen/Sophomores: whoever we sign in 2014. That's it.

A&M: Seniors: Manukainiu, Taylor, Obioha, Williams, RS Sophomores/Juniors: Points, Hall, Arnold, and an outside shot at RSJ, RS Freshmen/Sophomores: whoever they sign in 2014.

How in the hell is A&M's depth chart more favorable?

Manukainiu, Points and Alonzo Williams are all playing DT. So in 2015, you would have:

SDE: Obioha (SR), Alexander (SR) and probably Arnold (SO)

WDE: Taylor Twins (SR and JR), Hall (SO)

Obviously everything is subject to changes. Both Taylors have been put at DE because A&M needs bodies. I think Alexander might go back to the WDE in the fall, but he is the only other guy they can put on the strong side while Obioha is out with an injury.

Again, I don't know that it's better or worse than Texas, but I don't think that's a depth chart that scares a player off.

  • All I'm saying is there are plenty of reasons this kid could use to choose A&M over Texas. Their depth chart should not be one of them.

If Sumlin is able to convince this kid that he will see the field earlier/more at A&M than UT then Mack is truly done as a recruiter.

  • Better engineering program, better facilities? Hearing these things out of recruits mouths have me feeling like I am in the twilight zone. If one of the coaches don't immediately clear this up with facts then they just aren't doing their jobs on the recruiting front. The notion that he could leave UT campus thinking that A&M measured up on the engineering front speaks volumes to begin with. I'm starting to feel this staff(outside of Searles) has no clue when it comes to recruiting these days.

I think some of you are a bit too caught up in ranking the engineering schools. I doubt he is going to pick which of the two is ranked higher by USNWR. Hell, he wouldn't pick either if the point was simply to go to the highest ranked school with a football team.

Both schools offer excellent educations in engineering. That's what is important to him, IMO. Then you have the other criteria that most recruits consider -- depth chart, facilities, comfort with coaches, etc. -- that will help him determine where he goes.

Actually, I am responding directly to one of the claims he made...that A&M gets the edge in the Engineering major. That is simply false. If he only said what you just wrote, it wouldn't have merited any response.

Seniors: Manu and Williams are both DTs.
RS Sophomores/Juniors: Points is a DT

RSJ will not be a DE.

That leaves us with 4 DEs on the roster older than him, 1 more than y'all.

Even if you are correct, the point remains the same. The depth chart is still not more favorable for him in Aggieland. That being said, you have got to give Sumlin credit for being a good recruiter. If he can convince this kid that A&M has a better engineering program than Texas and that the depth chart is more advantageous for early playing time based on those numbers, he has earned my respect.

  • Better engineering? Better facilities? Better depth chart? Better this. Better that.

    Everything is debateable.

The point that should NOT be lost on Texas fans is that whether you believe one school to be better than the other or not, Sumlin is getting these kids to believe A&M actually IS better. That's recruiting 101, and right now he's eating Mack's lunch and eyeing his milkshake.

But it's all good. We're Texas.

  • If RSJ wants to play on Sunday he will move to defensive end or tight end that kid won't make it as a reciver in the league. The problem is he thinks he is the next Calvin Johnson.

Those guys are all defensive end body types.

Alonzo is 280 already as a freshman/sophomore and a likely starter at one DT position this year.
Points is 6'3" 260 as an early enrollee freshman...most people think he'll be a DT for good.

Manu is the only guy I question. Seems like a perfect 3-4 DE. It'll be interesting to see if he can gain more weight., but, like the others, he's already 270 as a RS freshman.
