Jackson Jeffcoat thoughts

  • The more I think about it, the more I am awed by what Jeffcoat is doing. IMO, the collective fanbase doesn't realize that we are watching something truly 'special.'

Obviously in the Mack Brown era, we have never seen a defensive player come in as a true freshman and play at this high of a level. Quietly, I think we all thought this was a top 5 defense in the country, and it took Jeffcoat one game to become a starter. Simply remarkable.

I think my question would be...what is his ceiling? He is apparently carrying 240 lbs...is his body of the type that is going to add more weight? How much strength can we expect to see by the time he is a junior? What other areas besides strength can he add to take his game to another level? Are we looking at a top 5 draft pick in the making?

Just some thoughts and questions...regardless...exciting stuff.

  • He might have been the best player on the field last night. I bet he's happy coming to Texas...the rest of our DLine is pretty salty themselves so they couldn't double team him.

  • The guy looks like an NFL linebacker to me, as far as his build. I'd hate to see him get any bad weight that could slow him at all. His speed + his technique are his advantage. You do wonder, when a guy is as well coached as he is, what amount is left under his "ceiling"...

But if he did nothing to increase his current skill set other than get more experienced, I'm not sure that guy isn't a first round after '12. He may not stay at DE though...

  • Jim Jeffcoat played 15 NFL seasons at about 6-5, 275. That seems like a pretty good target to me.

Understand your point, but players aren't full-grown as a frosh. There is still a lot of body maturity and strengthening to go

  • In another thread, I made the same post about not being able to really guess his ceiling.

I know I don't see him as a linebacker body long term. I see him growing into a 6-5, 265 or so guy after 2-3 years of full-time offseason. One thing to remember is that he's never had a full off-season with weights. He was a high school basketball player.

Weight is going to be added, it just needs to be good weight.

I'm not worried about him getting good weight, when the only position on the team that seems underdeveloped consistently are OL.

  • I honestly don't track the NFL closely enough anymore to know: is 265-275 lbs enough to be a starting defensive end in the NFL?

  • 3-4, no, 4-3 yes.

What's funny about Jeffcoat is how entertaining he is off the ball. My brother and I picked up on this vs Wyoming and it picked up against Tech. Some guys hit hard, some guys talk a lot, but watch Jeffcoat's demeanor and activity on every play. He is the easily meanest dude on the team already. Its probably a funny thing to say, but watch him off the ball pushing people around and fighting his blockers and finishing tackles. He's in on every little skirmish that breaks out. We laughed when he had the late hit on the Wyo QB because we were almost expecting it and thinking Muschamp won't encourage it, but he probably likes his attitude between the sidelines. Surprised to see that kind of swagger and mean come out of that kid.

Chicago DE Julius Peppers is 6-7/280...conversely, Orakpo is 6-4/255 & playing both an OLB/DE combo

If you want to compare JJ to another college DE, I'd look @ Da'Quan Bowers from Clemson...after watching him Sat against AUB, I was very impressed with the way he's gained weight up to 6-4/275, but still plays very athletic @ the DE

That being said, I expect Muschamp to experiment with JJ throughout the year

  • I'd like to hear from some old-timers to see if they can think of any immediate comparisons.

  • I'm not old, but I would like to throw a name out there....Deacon Jones.

If you get a chance to see Mario Edwards this year, there's a direct comparison that can be made to Bowers.

As far as Jeffcoat goes, I knew he was good (obviously) I just didn't know he was THAT good. He played in a 3-4 defense in high school and faced a lot of double teams at the point of attack. That's not the case and now that he's playing a 3-4 end he's being given the chance to cut loose a little bit.

The thing to watch with Jeffcoat is how much weight he gains this offseason. A great offseason in the weight room could lead to some very special things next fall.

Bottom line - I haven't been this impressed with a freshman DL since Tommie Harris.

270 is generally regarded as the minimum as a 4-3 DE unless you are an unreal talent like say Charles Haley. Less than that would be regarded as an outside LB type in a 3-4.

  • I hope he doesn't mess around with basketball. Nothign but offseason weight and speed training.
