JUCO DT recruit

  • There are currently 119 former NJCAA players in the NFL. The talent is most definitely there. So it must have more to do with admissions and Macks M.O.

The difference being that most baseball players are full qualifiers out of high school and are taking more competitive classes at the start of junior college that will transfer to UT.

Question...How does it work with basketball? We have taken a few kids from JUCO. Are they mostly full qualifiers out of HS?

One or two have been, yes. Having talked to someone, it's proven to be a real challenge to recruit and get in JC guys in hoops. Texas has liked 2-3 in the past, but just didn't have the transferrable credits, etc...

  • When was the last JC basketball player that Texas signed?

About the same time as Texas football I think.

People need to understand how difficult it is with admissions when guys aren't taking courses that transfer out of the gate.

Yup. It didn't fit and the jury acquit.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess it has been a while since the last bball juco. I agree with Mack's stance on this for the most part.

  • I will say in my situation at Blinn, I knew I was going to UT after a year and worked with the admissions office at UT to ensure I could transfer in and have my courses count. I made a 4.0 my first semester and a 3.8 my second semester at Blinn, and the credits I needed to count were counted.

However, I was friends with some of the football players, and they were taking "easier" courses for which UT did not recognize.

So, I see the difference. I just wanted to clarify that UT does not reject all courses taken at Blinn. To the contrary, Blinn is a pretty good juco (except for the fact I had my horns sawed off on my car sticker almost daily while I was there).

  • The problem with Jucos is that the Juco coaches desires (to keep their players eligible to play for their juco) does not necessarily run in conjunction with Texas' desires (to have the players take courses that will transfer to Texas).

In other words, the Juco coaches want their players eligible for them and the easier courses will transfer to other schools but not Texas.

Yes that's very true, my post was directed at the person who said UT would not accept Blinn credits.

  • Most of Blinn's classes transfer just fine. I imagine what causes the most problems are the remedial math classes that Blinn and other jucos have.

Math and science tend to be the main culprits.

    This is my point exactly.

Joe Juco football player is more often than not taking courses that will transfer to a schools general studies program or some other watered down degree program. Texas doesn't offer programs like that.

They do that because academics aren't a priority. And it is not just football. Applies to athletes in other sports as well.

The kids that transfer in know what courses to take ahead of time.

The combination of a kid with that much foresight who can make an immediate impact on the football field is pretty rare.

  • The degree program doesn't matter. For he first two years, students take the basics and almost all those classes transfer to UT except for things like the remedial math classes. The problem is caused by what Bobby talked about. The juco coaches aren't always looking out for their players' best interests down the road and want them eligible now. So they take remedial classes that won't transfer to Texas and after two years the kid isn't close to having the number of credit hours towards a degree that the NCAA requires.

I think it has more to do with Mack than admissions. Baseball still and will continue to bring in juco's.

As one who has had experienced in such matters, when the boss says get it done- one usually does. That being said the transferability of credits from community college to major universities like UT is truly complex and frustrating not just for stud players but for all students. U suspect that if Mack wanted a judco from Podunk Community that somehow everything would align correctly and he would be admitted.

You nailed the basic problem. Math requirements eat up a lot of time and cause major problems. I would not however blame the judco coaches for some of the problems. Lots of chiefs run around the community college admin area and create some rather strange requirements at various institutions. Back many years ago I was thus involved and to this day have several deans on speed dial. As a good friend once said talking about one of his degrees I have met the enemy and it is "us".(speaking of an ivy league school).
