J'Covan Brown to enter the NBA Draft (10:32 p.m. Wed. Update)

  • The Daily Texan is reporting via Twitter that a source has told them Texas junior guard J'Covan Brown will enter the NBA Draft.

    ================

UPDATE: Our friend Mark Rosner at the Austin American-Statesman is citing an NBA source saying that Brown will indeed enter the NBA draft.

Longhorn Brown will enter NBA draft

JCovan Brown, the Longhorn junior who led the Big 12 in scoring this season, will leave school for the NBA draft, according to an NBA source. Brown, who averaged 20 points a game, told reporters after the Longhorns were eliminated...

  • Certainly hate to read that, but I wish him well. I've enjoyed seeing J'Covan's mature while a Horn, and he was a bright spot on an otherwise frustrating season. Next year's squad is going to be awfully young, especially if Myck takes off, too.

    jwatts

  • WTF is going on? The fact that myck is even thinking about leaving is the saddest thing ever. And to make matters worse, we are trying to bring in Holland to replace him? I know that there are better players out there that would love to attend Texas. Why arent we going after them. Im afraid Holland will be as useful as Gibbs was this season! FU*K!

Why not the JUCO route! if we are so young then bring in JUCO players. Anyone know why we arent going after juco players?

  • You got to give credit to the Daily Texan.
Most of the time they just have a bunch of dumbasses running around there (at least they did when I was at UT).
Now they are actually breaking stories.
    Good for them.

  • J'Covan will be missed.

He's had his fair share of good and bad moments, but he always brought it in big games.

    Good Luck.

NBA source: J'Covan Brown will leave #Longhorns for the NBA draft. Brown was pretty clear with those intentions after NCAA tourney loss

  • If your Sheldon this lights a fire under your ass knowing those are your shots for next season.
I have no doubt Julian will be in the gym as he is a fighter.
Sheldon needs to take that next step and this offseason is huge for him.

  • Can I call dibs on all of the absurd apologist claims for next year as the team rolls to another gritty first round loss while playing a bunch of freshman and sophomores as Rick Barnes gets another raise? I would like to lay claim to:

"The program was surprised by the early exits of J'Covan Brown and Myck Kabongo."

"Anyone expecting more from this team doesn't understand college basketball. "

"Even though this team isn't going to compete for a conference title or make a run in the tournament, I really enjoy the way they come to play every night. "

"We've been to the tournament 14 straight times, what more do you want?"

"What, do you want to go back to having Bob Weltlich coach us, son?".

That probably covers most of it. This program is not sturdy right now and I don't think Rick Barnes is any more keyed in on fixing it than he is at planning an inbounds play with the game on the line.

on your last point, he did that this year at A&M. Preach on other than that.

  • Is Ridley a possible one and done? If not then if Myke leaves now then it's possible next years team will be full of players staying thru atleast there Jr season. (except maybe Ridley). It's hard to get optimistic. But if you think about a team 2 years from now with Lewis, Mcclelen, Holmes, Bond, Gibbs, as juniors Felix, Ibeh, hopefully Ridley, that white dude and that guy with the African name as sophomores plus whatever freshman and that's a solid experienced team. So we have a core intacted that has a chance to stick around a few years for once.

Leaving aside for a moment who you want to coach the team, what would you do to fix the problems you mentioned? Anybody can bitch.

  • Best of luck to J'Covan. He overcame a lot to get to the NBA.

  • Good luck to JB! Wish you could have stayed, but it's not surprising at all. Keep pushing and there's a place in the NBA for you!

As for the Horns, same song, different verse. Still think we are better next season, especially with Ridley.

    WTF is going on?

This has been par for the course for the last few years. Last year gutted this team with Hamilton, Thompson, and Joseph leaving, and now two more early departures.

Imagine if all 5 would have stayed, 2013 would be a grand year. But such is the life of college basketball, until Barnes can get players who contribute and stay for more than a year, e.g. Damion James, Gary Johnson, Texas will struggle to be elite.

Eh. It's not so much getting guys like James and Johnson to stay, it's getting the most out of the one-and-dones.

I don't think anybody should be surprised/upset that Brown is leaving. His game is as ready as it's going to be at this point IMO.

If Kabongo does in fact leave, that's a whole 'nother story.

Yep. Barnes has no plan or roadmap to get better. I would say next year looks more of the same except we are likely to be much worse.

Meanwhile coaches like Self, Williams, etc who get paid the same amount of money somehow just keep on trucking every year. But the built in excuses are there so get ready for them.

Then there is always the "you could not any better argument". As if The UT regents only have closetojumping and Rick Barnes as possible candidates for a 2+ million dollar a year job.
