J'Covan Brown announced this morning that he will forgo his senior season and submit his name for June's NBA Draft. He leaves Texas 17th all-time with 1,376 career points.

  • Texas now has 2 more ships that they could give out to get to 13 for next year, Ridley is already counted in this scenario. Meaning 2 of Clarkson, Holland, or Pollard have a ship available.

Remember Pollard won't decide until the end of April

  • I was listening to Houston radio today and Pallilo seems to think that this was a bad decision. In fact, he thinks J'Covan is a borderline 2nd round pick because he's a tweener. He usually knows what he's talking about, but I hope he's wrong on this one.

I think he goes into this fully aware of where he stands. Its clear he believes he can play his way up the draft or if he can't then he will play overseas. I think he is going to miss out on a pretty good season next year.

Just because J'Covan Brown may not be drafted, that does not mean it is necessarily a bad decision for him to go pro.

J'Covan is not an NBA point guard now and probably no more of an NBA point guard next year, so what is the advantage to him in delaying a jump to the pros? He's not going to get any faster or any taller in the next 12 months. He will not have more minutes at the point in the coming season for Texas than he had this year; he will probably have less as Kabongo improves his game. He's better off trying to get drafted this year and sign a deal and play D-league for a year while earning some decent coin or going overseas if he isn't drafted or signed as a free agent, because another year at Texas won't improve his draft stock.

It wouldn't improve his draft stock, but he would at least have a degree to fall back on if things don't work out. If it's going to be as much of an uphill road to the NBA as I've been hearing then that may not be such a bad idea.

Yes and no. His earning capacity as a basketball player for the next 12 years or so will probably eclipse his earning capacity over the rest of his life. He can still get the degree through offseason courses.

The NBA isn't the only place for players to earn a decent salary. Brown is likely to do quite well going the Tucker-Muoneke route if he doesn't make it in the NBA.

I'm not against him finishing school. It's just that the calendar is running on productive playing years, and he knows it.

Yeah... I guess I skimmed over the part where it says he has a daughter. That pretty much sums it all up for me. Good luck to him.
