Its been a tough month

  • if two months ago i came to you and said lets bet that we wouldn't get a single one of these recruits, you would have emptied the bank account.

    DGB
    daje johnson
    daniel brooks
    corey coleman
    thomas johnson
    mario edwards jr.
    javonte magee
    devante harris
    toshiro davis
    arik armstead
    bo wallace
    christo kourtzidis
    nelson agholor

add the fact we never really reached out to bralon addison or trey williams after the aggy collapse, it's been a head scratcher down the stretch.

  • Bad news at the end of the cycle is just a product of Texas's recruiting system. It really isn't that bad when you consider that even with these failed attempts we have a top three recruiting class. Almost every school would kill for the ability to close on top shelf talent early and spend the weeks before signing day striking out.

  • If I had told you one year ago that we would get all of the following recruits, I bet you would have bet your life savings against it:

    Johnathan Gray
    Malcom Brown
    Tim Cole
    Cayleb Jones
    Kennedy Estelle
    Curtis Riser
    Kendall Sanders
    Connor Brewer

Step away from the ledge. Mack and co. have done a hell of a job this year.

other than the brenham package most were expected to be longhorns. even sanders once they discussed his role on the team.

i'm not exaggerating at all. there was talk on here very recently about this class potentially rivaling the 02 class.

  • Have we even been actively recruiting all of these prospects for the past two months? nono

    Go Toros

  • This class was made when the coaches were able to get Brown and Cole, who were big time aggy leans at this time last year. I don't think about striking out with committed prospects as bad. We get upset when lose recruits and question their word, so the same applies with Edwards, Daje, and Brooks. Credit to the young men for maintaining their words with fsu, tcu, and ou respectively. I can live with those results.

I think Hobbs will get his offer, and I'm happy for him. Maybe he'll break the recent trend of TE whiffs due to bad evaluations and injuries.

Who was talking about this rivaling the 2002 class, except in a passing or jocular manner? Good grief.

If you had told me two months ago that we wouldn't get anyone from your list, I'd have said "man, I wish we could have held onto Thomas Johnson". Outside of the potential disappointment of DGB, none of the others mean anything to me. Would have been nice to have, but oh well.

Except for Toshiro Davis. I am really stunned that Texas didn't close him. I felt all along that we'd steal him from LSU. I'll never forget where I was today when I heard that Texas had backed off of him. That shook me to my core.

i agree, ton of respect to them for holding onto their commitments.

but after losing TJ, i believe getting another speed guy was imperative. Daje and Coleman would have provided that, and both seemed eager to get offered for most of the process.

You left out Dorial Green-Beckham. We still have a better chance at all the others that you listed, though they've all verbally turned us down, than we do with Beckham, who just won't extend us that courtesy. The staff should have seen this in December.

The first link is talking about best *offensive* class since 02. Any other classes jump out at you as being particularly excellent?

Obviously, the 05 class panned out really well. That's the only other offensive class worth talking about; and if you are talking classes as of signing day, it's not clear that it's a better class.

In the second link, there was *one guy* who said that *if we added DGB,* it would surpass '02. Everyone else basically said it's too early to tell.

Personally, I don't think it matters all that much whether this class is better on paper than any other class.

What matters is: (A) we secured three really strong classes in a row despite a massive coaching turnover and mediocre play in 2010, (B) we don't have any glaring roster deficiencies (though we will have some areas of need next year), and (C) it appears that we have a staff that can make the most of our talent.

BTW, going back to your original post, no I would not have emptied my pockets:

Consensus top two players in the country who seemed to be leaning toward other programs two months ago:
    DGB
    mario edwards jr.

Top Prospect & LSU lean from Louisiana:
    toshiro davis

Guys we weren't really after that hard or were committed to other schools:
    daje johnson
    daniel brooks
    corey coleman

Guys we hadn't established much of a relationship with and/or didn't seem to be reciprocating much interest
    javonte magee
    devante harris
    arik armstead
    nelson agholor

Guys not publicly on our radar:
    christo kourtzidis

I don't see why I would have bet a ton of money that we'd get at least one of those guys.

So that leaves a 3 star JUCO QB and a single commitment. Would I have bet a ton of money that we'd go after Wallace or not lose any of our current commitments? No.

Broader perspective: we finished outside of the AP top 25 last year, and the only school that will definitely finish with a better recruiting class won the national championship.

BTW, god bless TJ. He is better suited to a pass first offense, imo.

    IMO, our needs are:
    Legit tight ends
another WR who can stretch the field
    speed back

I don't have a strong opinion on Hobbs, except that I'd like to get a tight end in this class that will produce in a year or two, because it's not easy to find a guy who can contribute at a high level at TE right away. In other words, it's not as easy to wait a class.

With the speed back, we can probably wait a year, it just puts pressure on next year's class.

And you can probably wait a year on a downfield threat at WR, because those guys can contribute early, but DGB has so much potential that you definitely recruit him all the way.

    Just my opinion.

  • OP is valid. A few weeks ago the word around longhorn recruiting circles was we were right there for several top guys. To not even try for Coleman, not land one of the top guys, and lose TJ you have to say that's a disappointment based on where things were looking. Adding Santos and Daje will bring that up a bit to close if that happens.

  • I'm confused, some folks are happy the staff is swinging for the fence and others are happy when the staff was only offering "sure things". I suppose the only thing that really matters is who we have come signing day.

We have the second ranked class in the nation after going 7-5 and being one year removed from 5-7.

That has win all over it in my book.

Exactly. Pursuing top ranked national recruits, most of them OOS, inevitably means that we are going to miss on a high percentage. Ultimately, it's who you sign that is far more important than who you missed. If we sometimes get a Connor Brewer or Jordan Hicks, then we have to count ourselves fortunate.
