It looks like Trent Dilfer is sold on Swoopes........

  • ........and Dilfer thinks if he had a week to work with Swoopes, he could be QB1 as a True Freshman at UT because Dilfer doesn't think Swoopes has a whole lot to work on as a passer according to Max Olson from ESPN's Hornsnation.com on a radio interview (Link: http://kznx-am.tritondigitalmedia.com/includes/news_items/6/15091/maxolson3.26.12.mp3).

I've always been in favor of J.T. Barrett or Cody Thomas over Swoopes, But if Trent Dilfer is sold on Swoopes, I'm sold.

  • I like Dilfer too, but you can't watch a kid over two days and decide that he doesn't have much to work on.

Dilfer didn't see how Swoopes reacts with pressure in his face.
Dilfer didn't see how Swoopes' footwork/arm action changes when forced to improvise.
Dilfer didn't see Swoopes' ability to go through progressions, again, with pressure bearing down on him.

Things change when 300 pound dudes are trying to rip your head off. Things definitely change when 300 pound dudes have been beating on you for 4 quarters, you're down late, and tired of getting hit.

And that goes for everybody there, not just Swoopes.

  • Dilfer gave Swoopes an invite to Elite 11 Finals in California and they said Swoopes hasn't picked up a football since football season. That is pretty damn impressive in my opinion that he hasnt picked up a football since football season and he still got a invite...

Yep, especially when there were talented kids that excel throwing the ball there like Cody Thomas, Shane Morris, and Kohl Stewart.

  • From ESPN:

Jake Oliver and Durham Smythe have seen the future, and they can’t help but get excited.

The Dallas Jesuit receiver and Belton tight end competed at the Nike Football Training Camp in Irving, Texas, on Sunday along with five other Longhorns pledges.

Both had impressive days, and Oliver earned a spot at The Opening in Oregon later this summer, and both said the exact same thing when they departed Valley Ranch: They can’t wait to play with Tyrone Swoopes.

“He can do it all,” Oliver said. “I was really impressed. I’m excited to be his receiver.”

Oliver developed a good rapport and caught several passes from Swoopes, who earned quarterback MVP honors and one of the 24 prized spots in the Elite 11 Finals.

The impression Swoopes made on his future go-to guys was an important one, particularly because the Whitewright, Texas, star wasn’t allowed to scramble in any drills.

“That’s obviously a big part of his game,” Smythe said. “Being the MVP of the quarterbacks without being able to run the ball means obviously he can throw too.

“It’s good that he comes out here and competes with these guys. Playing at a 2A school, he probably doesn’t get the same level of competition. He came out here and showed it against all the best."

I agree with this. The Elite 11 is more similar to golf than it is to football since playing defense is not allowed.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

Well of course this doesn't make him a great QB yet, but considering a lot of what people were concerned about was his passing ability then him excelling at a passing even where other big time non 2A guys are at is the first good sign that he can be a good QB. Its not definitive but it's positive.

  • The elite 11 is pure silliness. Swoopes is gonna be a superstar, regardless. Just sit back and enjoy.

Knowing that Colt McCoy was a mid 3* recruit who played in class 2A Texas H.S. Football and was only expected to be a career back-up at UT, I doubt Colt was invited to the Elite 11.

Not sure how he performed while he was there, but he was sure selected for the Elite 11 back when they actually only took 11.

My point partially. Gerry said it himself. These camps prove absolutely nothing about QB play.

  • Diminish it all you want, but it means something when an athlete known for his running ability receives these accolades in a purely pass oriented setting.

And if they aren't careful, they may force him into running. May be playing right into his hands. I realize that this kid is not VY, but he sure looks like he has some of his tendancies.

  • Swoopes has been the guy that I hoped Texas would land at QB from the get-go.

I like Swoopes frame even more after seeing some of the pics from the Dallas thing. He looks to me like he has legit size and his frame reminds me of Terrelle Pryor.

I don't think this event will do anything for that argument. At least not for me. And that subject has been dropped for some time now yet,you always bring it up to spite me. I accept who we have chosen as QB guy.

  • No offense guys, but I'll take the opinion and thoughts of a former NFL QB turned into one of ESPN's best analysts over any of yalls opinions/thoughts every single day, regardless of how most think the Elite 11 means virtually nothing.

  • While this is a only a camp it gives Swoopes a chance to refine his fundamentals and receive coaching that he hasn't received up to this point. There are kids like Connor Wood who go to every camp and have a personal QB coach who you have to think are closer to maxing out than a kid like Swoopes. Having him to go a camp like this relatively raw and receive coaching from guys like Dilfer and Romo and be able to assimilate what they are working with him on in a short period of time is encouraging. He's clearly a kid with a ton of potential and room to improve, that to me is much better than a kid that is leaving HS close to being everything that he will be. I'm not saying any of the other QB's are tapped out, just referring to Swoopes as I don't really have any basis for judging anything other than what is reported about the camps.

The fact that Swoopes took the coaching and then applied it in the most difficult part of the camp is very encouraging. Add the fact that he carried it over to the next day and it is impressive. Anyone that has played any sports knows it is very difficult to tweak your mechanics without becoming robotic for a while as you think through what you have just learned. It's very pleasing to hear that he was able to take the instruction and apply it so quickly and effectively. His being coachable is a hugely positive quality.
