Is Harsin under pressure?

  • GoingCoastal said...

Huh? We were subjected to Greg Davis for 13 years. Harsin will get at least 2 years before the fans bring the heat on under performance.

Two years? Ha. More like two quarters of the first game.

GD's "production" was all smoke and mirrors. Our schedule is always a Charmin soft 1 game season. I really don't care whether we can score 40 or 65 on North Texas. Here's the points we've put on OU since 2000:

    14, 3, 24, 13, 0, 45, 28, 21, 45, 16, 20

    Average: 20.8

This. Avergage points for 2000-2004: 10.8

Texas fans are known for their patience. Harsin will be given plenty of time to produce before he starts feeling any pressure.

    Good one. I get it.

Nope, he won't be feeling much pressure. This spring we have 8 TEs, none of them impact players, and 7 healthy offensive lineman. If we don't have success, it's because of how Mack put together this roster. These next few years are going to be painful. Period. We need to give a long leash to these coaches and let them build this program back up brick by brick.

True, but given our fan base, I just don't think this is realistic.

Fans, in general, have completely unrealistic expectations of their players and coaches. Hence the ad nausea "Fire Coach so-and -so" web sites that appear every year.

The coaches here will not be given any slack whatsoever. None. Wont happen. Just read this site or any other. Look at any in game thread. Every single play is scrutinized by an ill informed bunch of internet coaches.

Fair or not, this is the age we live in.

  • Quarterback makes a great point, though, about giving these guys leash and TIME. Things were so shaky on both sides of the ball last year, and the unbalance these guys are facing -- a dearth of talent and even bodies at some positions and an overabundance of guys who can barely earn their scholarships at other -- that there are bound to be a lot of shaky moments before everybody gets comfortable with the new schemes. if we expect too much from our none-too-close vantage points, both Harsin and Diaz will be perceived as failures long before they have a chance to succeed. And that'll be too bad if it happens, because I'm confident, even convinced that both of these guys will be bringing great things to the program. And as bad as our product on the field was last year, and considering everything the players are going to be processing and learning, we all need to be patient.

And Victory10, I agree totally with your thought -- I think it was you -- that it's Diaz who will be feeling the most pressure from this peanut gallery and others, simply because of how popular Boom was here. Anybody who coaches at Texas is like the object of light under a magnifying glass, anyway -- we are Texas, after all. I think there will be a lot of people here and at other sites screaming this year when things go the slightest bit wrong, then crawling back into the woodwork by 2012 when Harsin, Diaz, Applewhite, Wyatt et al have the Horns right back in the thick of the chase for the Big 12 title, if not No. 1 in the land.

  • Every football coach is under pressure, and more of it is self-imposed than fan / alumni / media imposed...Every coach worth a hoot coaches best with his back to the wall, too...Funny, he works his tail off to stay out of the back-to-the-wall situation, but it's that situation that drives him to his best...There are no comfort zones--ever--for those striving for excellence...Not one lazy rep...That's why you do it....

  • Neither coordinator has an easy job ahead of them this season. But, I think Harsin has more tools to work with than Diaz does given how thin we are at DT and now corner.

The depth on the OL is an issue. But, I'm optimistic that a new scheme will take a bit of pressure off of those guys. And, I'm anxious to see if some new enthusiasm at OL coach will make a difference there.

Harsin is replacing one of the most disliked coordinators (rightly or wrongly) in our football history. Diaz is replacing a guy who most fans really liked. I think you can pretty easily make the case that Diaz will be facing more pressure than Harsin.

As Lee Trevino once said, "You don't know what pressure is until you've played for $5 a hole with only $2 in your pocket."

That was a great response. In general all OC are targets. I have many friends who are die hard fans of other football teams. To a man they hate their OC and blame him for their team not being the mnc.

  • AT is correct in what he wrote. Both Diaz and Harsin will be under much more pressure than they have ever been before. The standards over the last 10 years have set the bar pretty high. I don't think either has ever faced the scrutiny that they will face here at TX.

That being said, from a fans standpoint, I believe that at least a 1 year grace period will be allowed before fans jump all over them both. This year has so many built in excuses for failure, and the expectations are pretty low from most of the fans I talk to. Low still means an expectation of 8 or nine wins and a bowl game. More importantly, it will be the improvement throughout the season in conference play.

As for Harsin, he will definitely get more slack than Diaz. The general consensus, for whatever reason, has been so negative on GD and our offense for so long, that just seeing new ideas will get fans excited about the possibilities. Diaz will not get nearly the slack as Harsin because everyone liked Muschamp and believed we had a good defensive system.

  • Is Harsin under pressure? Am I on the right board?

Seriously, somebody help me understand how in any way can Harsin (and Diaz) not be under a world of pressure?

    There are levels of pressure.

There will be an ebb and flow to that IMO.

  • Any reasonably intelligent football fan will rejoice at the improvement in our offense. Greg Davis had become so incompetent in his use of talent that high school coaches laughed at our offense.

They have a track record such that they could still land a good job after 2 nondescript years at Texas.

the next few "years" will be painful? Tap the breaks on the doom and gloom. Texas has lots of talent. Some of it inexperienced. Some of it that was not coached up well last year or in the best physical shape, but the cupboard is FAR from bare. There is no reason this program should be going through YEARS of painful seasons. Last year sucked, but I think history will show it as more an aberration than anything. Its the only of its kind under Mack and there were far more reasons Texas went 5-7 than just pure talent itself. From coaching, attitude, conditioning, etc they all had bigger impacts. This team should not be winning just 6-7 games next year given what is on campus and the staff they have now,

  • We're not winning the MNC next year. We probably won't be in serious contention for the conference title next year. Take a few breaths, realize this, and the development of next year's team (warts and all) will be something to enjoy.

I, for one, will enjoy watching an offense who's goal is to put it's players in the best position to succeed. One that's interested in giving linemen angles, RB's holes and receivers the chance to catch the ball on the run. One that's not afraid of shifts, motion, and the use of the unconventional to move the football. I want to see how Harsin responds to not having the best players on the field every game, and how he responds when his offense meets some scoring adversity. Honestly, between him, Wyatt, and Applewhite, we've got one helluva offensive brain trust to tap into for ideas.

I want to see how Diaz responds to a true passing league. The SEC has recently discovered the spread and is chunking the pigskin more than ever, but it is still very much a league that likes to move the ball on the ground, and there will be no VY/Cam Newton clones free lancing their teams to victory this year. Will he send pressure every down? How will he protect our young secondary?

I want to see how Will Russ performs.

There's a lot I want to see, but in my mind, the pressure is somewhat off while the team grows into it's new offensive and defensive molds, and the roster is restocked with not only highly ranked players, but players recruited with a philosophy in mind. I think the pressure is largely off in 2011. 2012? Well that's when even rational fans can get a bit irrational.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

  • I think the greatest issue Harsin will have to overcome is expectations.

Basic thought #1: Greg Davis sucked and is predictable, so much so my grandmother could predict the plays. Any decent high school OC would be better. He may not be the worst of the worst, but he's real bad. If only we had a good coordinator, our talent will be able to light up the scoreboard like a pinball machine. Harsin's offenses have been lighting up the scoreboard like a pinball machine, therefore he must be great -- certainly better than GD. It is therefore inconceivable that Harsin will not greatly outperform GD.

Basic thought #2: If Harsin could run record breaking offenses with the poor ole talent level available to Boise, just think what wondrous things such a man could do with the true talent the like of UT enjoy.

I just don't think it works out so simply. Those thought processes are creating unjust expectations that will in turn create undue pressure.
