  • ...did any of you happen to pick up the comment in the KSU vs BU game that the Wildcat defense is made of 9 transfers. Eight of which are Juco guys.

The reason I even bring this up is not that the transfers are a huge surprise. The issue is that many say that Snyder does it with below average talent. I challenge that. There are so many athletes who no one ever recruits due to their academic status or off field issues. Guys that never even make it into anyones top 100 lists due to how impossible it will be for top schools to get them qualified. Many of them go to juco but they are far from average in many cases.

Bottom line is that KSU has talent. We just don't recognize the names.

  • Snyder's MO has always been to recruit JUCOs heavily. It's not the entire roster but KSU always had a lot more than other top programs IIRC.

  • OU always seems to have their share of juco transfers too.

I'm sure not going to look my nose down on anyone getting help from the juco ranks. Mack should have done it long before he did.

  • Kansas State has way more talent than they are given credit for, you are absolutely right. Plenty of JUCO talent and BCS program transfers. Then they go out and find high school guys they can develop and grow into their system.

This. He also pioneered scheduling walking corpses for OOC games.

  • I caught that comment too, and it made me ponder some things as well. I realize that KSU has always been built on JUCO players, but what does that mean in relation to "talent'? It's not that every JUCO guy is somehow more talented than a high school recruit, after all these JUCO guys just two years removed from being 3-star high school guys themselves.

I think the big issue is that KSU is getting a more developed prospect (physically and emotionally) than the schools who recruit predominantly high school recruits. In other words, when KSU comes together every August, there team is loaded with 21-year-olds who are as physically developed as they'll ever be, and who know what it takes to play against other 21-years-olds, and know how to prepare and take care of business at the collegiate level.

That means that the only thing on all KSU players' minds is 100% football. There's no learning curve, immaturity curve, academic curve, or physical development curve that other programs have to deal with. As a consequence, Snyder can focus on coaching the finer points without having to worry about physical development, mental maturity, learning curve, etc..

It's the NFL equivalent of having no rookies or young players, and all seasoned veterans on your roster. The benefit isn't necessarily having more athletic ability/ talent on your roster, it's having a bunch of guys who know how to be NFL players and who focus on being NFL players. It's gotta help a coach who is obsessed with teaching the details of the game to have a roster like that.

  • It makes sense to always have some JUCO's on the recruiting board. It's a lot easier to know about a 20 or 21 year old's potential and development than a 17 year old HS kid. It's more of a know quantity. There's also less competition for the JUCO guys as not all schools recruit them, or don't recruit many. I think it's just smart to always take a couple every year... if they're the right players for your needs.

We usually only bring in one or two a year but rarely do they turn into major contributors.

Fine. He has talent. He also has less time to put it in place, coach it up, and maximize it.

Sorry. I fail to see your point. Unless your point is that Snyder is a great coach.

Very good post Racer. Good points. I'll add there's a reduced risk of players not panning out.

IMO, Juco players are fine when you cherry pick, but no way to build a program.
