Insights into our recruiting of Manziel.

  • okay.. long thread but fun..

I declare the winners to be Black Ship and Wild Bill clap. Losers don't need to be mentioned. Nobody remembers second place.

Dear Lord... I was thinking of taking you seriously, but then you went and said Jarrett Lee was a "very good to excellent college QB."

I don't have a problem with missing out on Chase Daniel considering we landed Colt in that class. I would have loved to have seen the response from everyone had we chosen Reesing over Snead and don't have a problem with that "miss," either. I'm not sure how Harrell would have done at Texas. He would have represented a complete shift in philosophy from what we were running and recruiting at the time. Not pleased we didn't get any of our '04 targets, but most of them flamed out anyway.

Ok, Jarrett Lee was a borderline pick. I only left him in there because he did cash a couple NFL checks and even started a couple games, out of desperation mind you, but still started a couple games.

  • Boy, I read this entire thread for the first time tonight. I hope you all now see the futility in trying to persuade or have intelligent discourse with fools. Although I enjoyed the repeated blows to the gut of Chupita by Black Shipley and Wild Bill, you have to remember that it's being done to an imbecile and it is a hopeless cause. Better to ignor totally, never quote and never acknowledge her posts. There is clearly an agenda there, because nobody in their right mind is that obtuse. Perhaps it really is Chris Jessie in drag or even Sally herself.
Sally if that's you we love you and your dedication to defending Mack, but please.
About the quarterback recruiting misses, what hasn't been pointed out is one common trait that all of the winners have had in spades since their junior years in high school is leadership. Vince, Colt, Luck, Griffin III, Foles, Daniel & Manziel had unbridled confidence in themselves in high school and refused to allow their teams to lose.
A second trait is athleticism including escapability. What Mack should learn from this, which he won't, is to look for the skill set but put leadership and confidence as a prerequisite. Gilbert did not have that outgoing self-assuredness that players rally around. Introverts don't make leaders. Gilbert is a really nice guy but he is shy, introverted and easily shaken.
Skill in passing and running certainly helps the confidence in knowing you can win, but what jumps out from the truly great college quarterbacks like Vince and Griffin III is leadership. Regardless if Manziel is only 6 feet tall, the guy is like Little Johnny himself, ballsy. Not only are guys like this usually great quarterbacks, they are great athletes because of love of sports and competition. They would beat you at pingpong or washers or cornhole, and they will lead your team to win games they shouldn't win. Just get out of their damn way and let them win the game for you. That's what Vince & Griffin did.
Vince was a very good basketball player and I believe baseball as well. Griffin was a star in track, football, baseball, basketball. Manziel was a fabulous shortstop, so yes he has a hell of an arm, but he's an even better golfer. It might be his best sport.
The fact that Duane Akina, an ex-quarterback and trusted friend to Mack, was unable to get Mack to even offer Manziel as an athlete is disturbing, especially in light of Manziel's love of the Horns. There was some guy name Flutie that some say was pretty good, but he couldn't have played for Mack because he was only 5'10". So, he's obviously second tier. Four sport stars like Griffin of Manziel who have rare speed, strong arms, intelligence and leadership in spades are not worthy of an offer when you can get a good kid from a good home like Garrett Gilbert, even though he is an introvert and only modestly athletic.
Quarterback is the most important position on the team, yet its a position Mack has screwed up regularly in selection and by pre-ordaining the starter before the kid shows the team he's won the job. For those of you still saying Manziel hasn't proved it yet you'd never make a coach because a coach has to see the qualities of greatness including leadership before it is obvious to the world. If nothing else he could have been a starter at safety.
Mack needs to listen to Duane and Major when it comes to skill guys and to Bo and Stacey when it comes to linemen so we don't offer SFA level players just because they play at Lake Travis. If he could pass on Vince at QB without arm twisting, that tells you that evaluation and vision is not Mack's strongpoint. That's why we are in the mess we are in. His strongpoint is closing the deal that his evaluators bring to the table.

Bobby, what was the criteria for rating Ash 3 points and 22 spots higher?

As for arm strength, Maziel excels on the short and some intermediates. I'd have to watch pass by pass to tell you more but early they obviously didn't trust his deep ball.

    They trusted it against Alabama.

  • We've had above average to great QB play in 13 out of 15 seasons with Mack Brown. And that's the truth.

    Hell of a QB coach/manager!!!

My biggest problem is his inability to have real depth at the position. Basically outside of Applewhite/Simms, Chance Mock was the best 'backup' we've had and I think one of the reasons he didn't transfer like all the others was tattooed on his ass.

I count at least 3 bad seasons: 2003, 2010, 2011. 1999 and 2007 are questionable in my mind as well.

2003 was a bad season from QB play?

RS Freshman VY won Big 12 Freshman of the year. Had a 130 pass rating. 1000 yards rushing at 7 per carry. Had, at the time, the highest point per drive output of any QB in the Mack Brown era. (He later exceeded that. Then Colt did in 2008 but not 2009). VY being in the lineup also added almost 2 yards per carry to Ced's tally.

Oh. And our backup QB put up 16 passing TDs against 2 picks.

That's the definition of above average. And actually it was quite good. VY had some monster games and some clutch games (K State).

Fair enough. My point is that we've had it real good at QB. Outside of Gilbert in 2010 and Freshman not ready Ash in 2011, we've had Major, Chris, VY, Colt, and a good season of Ash with likely two more good seasons of Ash. Unless something nuts happens that means in 17 years we will have had just two years of poor QB play.

I can excuse that in some sense because it was caused by one 5 star QB being a bust.

And it's damn hard to build QB depth these days. Kids want to play within 2 years of signing. I can bet you Okie lite is going to lose a QB or two after this year -- them two have played too well to want to sit behind a soph.

Now you sound like Chupita. You're better than that.

Chance Mock started our first 6 games, only to get benched after losing to OU 65-13. So he was no "back up QB". Vince took over after OU, putting up decent numbers, but when we HAD to throw, Mock came back in. See game against Tech. Mock then started our Holiday bowl loss to Washington State.

That was a good season for you?

It was not just Texas that missed with Manziel but it was interesting to see that Akina liked him as a QB offer. Texas will be fine without Manziel but it's always interesting to get details on how our coaches evaluate. Text below from FW Star-Telegram article.

"Two things about Texas," answered Smith, "No. 1, Johnny dreamed of playing in Austin. He absolutely loved Texas I guess from when he was a little kid. If Texas had offered him a scholarship even as an offensive lineman, he would have taken it.

"Texas offered nothing. I've seen it written where they offered as a DB, but that's not true. Johnny would have gone, believe me.

"But the second thing is to give a lot of credit to Duane Akina [Mack's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach]. Duane worked it hard. He became totally convinced Johnny was a quarterback who could play at that level. He really wanted Johnny.

"When it comes to recruiting, of course, Duane had to then sell Johnny to the offensive staff, and in the end, to Mack. He couldn't make that sell because Johnny didn't fit the dimensions. I know they regret it now, but Duane is off the hook, for sure."

I am guessing his off the field issues made him less desirable. And maybe something else. If he matures, that should become in the past.
