  • It really doesn't matter if a QB has a strong arm, fast, quick, accurate, quick release, intelligence, works hard, has good instincts, etc. If he doesn't have prototypical size, especially height, Mack won't touch him.

Really? Never realized Colt was of prototypical size coming out of high school. Guy was barely six feet tall, if that.

Colt and Case beg to differ. Did Johnny not join the FCA?

  • I like who we have but let's not belittle the miss. Huge! Ash is a good QB. The Kid, Manziel is a seminal QB talent--as a Frosh! He's playing like a senior but I understand the Oline he is playing behind that has 3 and 4 year starters also has a lot to do with his success. The advantages aside, he is a good deliverer of the football and has moxie in his ability to make plays. A great player. That's why they have been in every game this year and could just as easily be undefeated at this point.

HC and staff must continue to learn from such colossal misses. Like the TE at Washington, Austin Jenkins, RG, to mention a couple. People we could have had but projected at positions other than what the prospect wanted and who then have gone on to great success at other places at the position they wanted to play. RG paid us back handsomely for the mistake. Glad we don't have to play the aggies this year or anytime soon with the kid at QB.

Under the best of circumstances misses are bound to happen but it should be studied and hopefully from what we learn we can cut back on the colossal misses. o not go back and look at how and why we whiffed on players who become phenomenal stars is unwise.

Yes but they were coaches' sons and that makes them better.

I would say the majority of the QBs recruited by Brown have been 6'1" or under (meaning they're listed at 6'2" or under). I don't consider that to be prototype size.

You think Ash's arm is better?

I think Ash has a slightly above-average arm. I don't think Ash has some sort of howitzer.

Bobby, what was the criteria for rating Ash 3 points and 22 spots higher?

As for arm strength, Maziel excels on the short and some intermediates. I'd have to watch pass by pass to tell you more but early they obviously didn't trust his deep ball.

Ash is a bigger more durable player. Manziel did a ton of freelancing, about 10x what he does now. Manziel did more freelancing than VY for example.

    Both taller than Manziel.

In any case, did you think Mack envisioned Colt as his 4 year starter when he recruited him? Or was that job supposed to be Jevan Snead's? As for Case McCoy, I'm not really sure why he's on the team so it's tough for me to defend that one.

So, what do we make of Muschamp's comments about Texas recruiting Manziel as a DB? Seems to me there is some revisionist history at work here by someone. All that being said, hindsight is 20/20. Lots of folks passed on Manziel as a QB. No doubt he's having a great year, but QBs have had great years before and come back to earth soon thereafter. He may turn out to be a great college QB by the time all is said and done, but the book on Manziel is still being written. The first chapter looks good, but let's see how the rest of the story plays out before anointing him (or anyone else for that matter) as aggy's messiah and/or labeling Mack Brown and other coaches that passed on the kid as mental midgets.

It was a motivational speech he gave at halftime of the Aggie-UF game. Basically saying you are letting a DB run all over you to the defense.

Doesn't seem to be much evidence UT ever recruited Manziel for any position.
