Insights into our recruiting of Manziel.

  • It was not just Texas that missed with Manziel but it was interesting to see that Akina liked him as a QB offer. Texas will be fine without Manziel but it's always interesting to get details on how our coaches evaluate. Text below from FW Star-Telegram article.

"Two things about Texas," answered Smith, "No. 1, Johnny dreamed of playing in Austin. He absolutely loved Texas I guess from when he was a little kid. If Texas had offered him a scholarship even as an offensive lineman, he would have taken it.

"Texas offered nothing. I've seen it written where they offered as a DB, but that's not true. Johnny would have gone, believe me.

"But the second thing is to give a lot of credit to Duane Akina [Mack's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach]. Duane worked it hard. He became totally convinced Johnny was a quarterback who could play at that level. He really wanted Johnny.

"When it comes to recruiting, of course, Duane had to then sell Johnny to the offensive staff, and in the end, to Mack. He couldn't make that sell because Johnny didn't fit the dimensions. I know they regret it now, but Duane is off the hook, for sure."

  • Nothing about his recruitment is at all out of the norm for Texas under Mack Brown. For about half of the great players who have come here, he had to be begged by assistants to take. His talent evaluation skills are on par with my grandmother's, and she is dead.

Vince Young and... ????? I love stupid hyperbole.

It would have been interesting to see how Manziel would have fit into Harsin's offense. It would also be interesting to see how much trouble he could have gotten himself into on Sixth. I don't have a problem with passing on JM for Ash. It's not like we whiffed, and this isn't nearly the same as going all-in on Gilbert while ignoring a million other amazing QBs in his class and the class before him.

  • I can see why they picked Ash over him but he would have been nice to have. I'll take Ash over him now but at the end of the career I'm sure he'll have bigger career numbers. On the other hand taking only one qb a year is something I don't agree with especially if someone with talent wants to come aboard.

They begged for RG3 and I believe maybe a couple running backs unsuccessfully.

So, what do we make of Muschamp's comments about Texas recruiting Manziel as a DB? Seems to me there is some revisionist history at work here by someone. All that being said, hindsight is 20/20. Lots of folks passed on Manziel as a QB. No doubt he's having a great year, but QBs have had great years before and come back to earth soon thereafter. He may turn out to be a great college QB by the time all is said and done, but the book on Manziel is still being written. The first chapter looks good, but let's see how the rest of the story plays out before anointing him (or anyone else for that matter) as aggy's messiah and/or labeling Mack Brown and other coaches that passed on the kid as mental midgets.

  • What would Duane Akina know about being a QB? Certainly not more than Mack...

  • I just wish Texas had taken the best available QB instead of Case.

    Diggs.

And then let's not forget to juxtapose these "beg" offers with early offers like Kyle Kreigel and Patrick Nwokpara. Kyle and Patrick probably had better letters of recommendation from their homeroom teachers though.

Applewhite had to beg Mack to offer Quandre and they offered him very late. If you were looking for another example. Although I am very happy with the RB's on campus now, there are a handful of other elite guys that Applewhite could have gotten in the classes before Brown/Bergeron that were vetoed.

  • Mack's talent evaluation skills are crap. It's not really even debatable. He thought Vondrell McGee was "really good" even after he go to the 40. He put Cody Johnson as his feature back. He started Killebrew over Kindle. He let McWhiffer recruit LT pusses for years. He is a dumbass when it comes to talent eval.

The thing is that in his first chapter he already looks to be one of the best QBs they've ever had, has led them to a victory over Bama in their own house, which effectively makes him their "messiah" if that's the term you want to use.

And I don't need Manziel to play well to label Mack Brown a mental midget.

Going for an extra play against Nebraska and almost losing in regulation time is the move of a mental midget.

Taking a spread QB with a slow release and trying to plug him into a run-oriented pro-style offense is the move of a mental midget.

Saying that much of the fanbase isn't a "friend" because they are critical of your mental midgetry is the move of a mental midget.

Not trusting the EVALUATION of a former college QB who is begging you to approve an offer for a kid he believes can play is the move of a mental midget.

Defending a mental midget online and downplaying Manziel's affect on the A&M program? Also the move of a mental midget.

  • that sounds about right. I can't imagine Mack EVER taking an undersized QB. He will always value tangible size over actual ability to play football. It gets him 8 wins and a trip to Holiday Bowl without having to do much else.
