I'm Done With This Defense....

I share your concern on the D. But, man, this one feels good especially because I feel like we found a quarterback.

Hey, I agree with you there, and it's been a pleasure watching his and his teammates' growth this year. That was a pretty decent secondary he was throwing against and he did quite well. Our offensive line didn't look like world beaters out there by any measure, but we started moving the ball on them quite well at the end.

I was very impressed with Cowboys' tenacity to stay home despite our numerous misdirection attempts. They may give up yards and yards because of the nature of their offense, but Bill Young defenses are usually very sound.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

  • man it was a pain to watch our D, OSU's rb's were gashing us left heavy. id rather these defensive problems be early in the season, but i'm not sure if they're fixable. WVU will torch them if our d plays the same way. we shoulda beat OSU by 10+, a couple dropped balls, and there you go. Where was Malcolm brown1, didn't matter i thought gray looked really good when he got the chance.

True, but it would take a lot more than that for me to be "done" with them. I've been through quite a bit worse than that with them.

When they were supposed to be a sure fire top 10 unit? We have two good DE's, one good corner, and one good safety at the moment. A DT flashes here and there.

I've been apologizing for them for the first three games. Understanding that the players being replaced had seen an order of magnitude more football than their replacements. The inability to line up, make the routine tackle, avoid complete coverage lapses and busts or do more to frustrate a QB making his first college start is more than irksome.

We gave up yardage and points last year, but were excellent in almost every adjusted stat column after facing some truly loaded offenses. I think we'll be considerably worse in those same stats this year against weaker offensive competition. It's not a fun unit to watch. I have no faith whatsoever in their ability to get off the field against quality competition. the offense, otoh, is building up quite a bit of credibility with as many personnel limitations as the defense.

They're nothing special and will get their stuff pushed for the remainder of the season.

We apparently didn't appreciate Robinson and Acho's play enough.

    thats the attitude....

You are mistaken if you think the offenses Texas faces this year aren't as good as last year.

OSU is averaging more yards and points than last year.
Baylor is just as good as last year with Griffin.
WVU and TCU replacing Missouri and aggy from last year are trade ups.
    Tech is Tech.
    KSU is about the same.
    ISU is about the same.
    KU sucks.
OU is the only team I would agree with you on being worse than last year.

Battle tested. He's gonna be at the helm for the next 3 years. By the time he's gone, I think we are going to realize we lost someone special.

  • So everyone thought Diaz was the next defensive genius last year & now he is a moron. Harsin was an idiot last year that was barely a step above our last idiot & now he is a borderline genius. Which is it? Do the Jimmy's & Joe's mean more than the "x" & "o's"?

With a true frosh QB getting his first start of his career?

Look, it's not a sin to let a spread team move the ball on you. It happens. I can deal with that. It is a sin to miss tackles leading to explosive plays and touchdowns. It's a sin to let WR's get behind the secondary on 3rd and 16 from the minus 8 yard line. It is a sin to let one player run the same play to the same side against your team with near impunity for nearly 3 quarters.

We were boned on the kick out of bounds call. It clearly touched the OSU player, and his body language said "I f'ed up!" from the second the ball was redirected to after it went out of bounds. We busted a well placed directional kick coverage, and we shanked a punt. We didn't do our defense a lot of favors, but they couldn't stop a wet fart this evening. That wasn't Brandon Weeden and Blackmon torching our defense.

I'll say this, outside of AP's two egregious whiffs, our tackling was considerably better though our ability to get off blocks was suspect and we were out of position time and time again.

Agree with everything you said with the exception of our tackling being improved .
That shit is still atrocious. We look like an NFL team with the "put a shoulder on him and he'll crumble". It's sad looking so far and I haven't seen any improvement all year.

I'm not mistaken. I think time and competition will bear that out.

OSU played Arizona and two teams that would struggle to give Southlake Carrol a good game. Let's recheck those stats by the end of the year. They replaced Weeden and Blackmon. They're not as good as they were.

BU is not just as good as they were with Griffin. Come'n man. Really? The Heisman winner, that faster than hell wr, and that hoss at RB head off to the league or post graduate work and they managed to get better on offense? They're plenty good. I believe I said Florence would do just fine before the season, but let's be real here.

WVU would be the equivalent of last year's OSU or BU offense. They are truly elite.

TCU has yet to play anyone with a pulse either. They have a QB and some nice pieces on offense. Are they better than last year's aggy offense? Doubt it. Better than Mizzou? Maybe. Probably

Tech is Tech, and KSU is KSU. ISU is the same, KU has a decided fupa advantage, and BlowU is definitively worse.

So that's one team, WVU, being the equal of what we faced last year. One. There's one maybe, and seven equals or worse.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

    Post that tripe elsewhere.

I've been pumping Harsin for two years, and think the world of Diaz. Something tells me that he wasn't the one who made the thud tempo decision. The things that are pissing me off are kids playing dumb football related and not necessarily schematic.

The D who has at least 4-5 future NFLer's on the field at any one time would struggle to slow down the geriatric crowd rushing a Ryan's buffet.

Diaz's defenses are predicated on the LB play.

Look at who he's got right now at the position.

Cobbs - jr. that is playing LB for the 1st time ever in his football career. Probably should have RS last year to learn the nuances of the position.
Edmond - soph. man beast that is a 1st year starter, and his built more for downhill running games than spread attacks. Still though he's getting better.
Santos - true frosh forced to start at WLB when he's really a MLB.
Thompson - soph. that didn't play much last year at the position.
    Jackson - see above.

The only guy on this team with real playing experience at the position was Hicks. Who also happens to be the best all around LB on the team. I can't say that I'm disappointed with their play, because I don't think anyone could honestly have any real expectations from this group based on their lack of overall playing experience.

This is a rough league where you have to be aligned correctly 100% of the time, or the offenses will chew you up.

I think the most disappointing thing from tonight, for me, was Diggs dropping INT #4 in the EZ.

  • I always thought the way to beat a spread offense was to pressure the qb any way you could. We seemed to be playing prevent all night.

Every team WVU included will continue to gash us if our LB's crash the gap on every snap and immediately take themselves out of the play. Santo's and Edmonds do a decent job of tackling when they haven't run themselves out of the play which is usually almost every down. Unfortunately most of our defense has zero confidence in themselves right now.

Unfortunately, the hype on Edmonds seems to be just hype. He is not getting off blocks. Given his size, I doubt he can be a plus defender in the passing game. If he is not a plus player in the running game I am not sure he is helpful. I am hoping the lights go on, but as of now I am removing the "bad MFEr" from his wallet

Certainly bend but don't break, and let a QB making his first collegiate start make mistakes against the best defense he's seen.

  • The biggest issue I see is 3rd down. This unit just seems allergic to 3 and outs. I would love to know Texas's stats on 3rd down. Just an amazing amount of 3rd and longs given up. The secondary is should be good enough to win these battles, but they want to make me relive that 3rd and 18 from the OU game over and over. It was fixed after RRS last yr. I am just praying it happens this week, because that will make a huge difference

Texas is actually pretty good at 3rd down defense.

    Wyoming was 1-11 for 9%
New Mexico was 6-15 for 40%
Ole Miss was 4-12 for 33%
Oklahoma State was 6-13 for 46%
On the season 17-51 for 33%

I would agree with you until I saw the stats, but I think that comes from giving up some 3rd and 10+ yards too often.

Currently Texas has allowed 17/51 3rd down conversions

It's not that. It's the explosive plays. Texas has already given up more 50+ yard plays in 4 games this season than they did all of last year, or is very close to it.

That's the biggest issue I see, that and blitzing on 3rd and long. Trust your AA DE(s) and play coverage.

ding ding ding! We have a winner....

That, and really, we don't have anyone else that can take Phillips spot?

They should work at least a few hours a day on tackling alone.

  • I'm sure they've been working on tackling and watching film of previous games leading up to this game to see what went right and what went wrong. The talent is there and I don't think Manny has gone from genius to stupid in a year.

I have to think its mental. When Randle went on that long run on the 2nd play, the unit is probably thinking to themselves "here we go again". Then the players start thinking too much and start pressing and snowballs.

They did start to get some stops as the game went on and forced them to settle for 3's. Plus a couple of times our kickoff team didn't do our D any favors on coverage or botched squibs. Also, let's not forget Okie State is an explosive team.

The coaches have a better pulse on the team than I do. But I'm not sure another "come to Jesus meeting" is in order. Instead, have them watch film of the Holiday Bowl and show them what they can become.

In the meantime, I feel like I'm commisurating as if we lost. Snap out of it, WE WON!!!

  • They are in a pretty shitty situation.

Clear that Phillips needs to be the 5th DB. He isn't cutting it. But... Thompson and Turner are worse. I'd experiment with Diggs at safety and Evans or Duke Thomas taking over at CB, and then Phillips coming in for the nickel, or something.

    WildBill71

  • Also, LB is just a cluster f. Best player is out, Santos and Edmond get lost, Thompson looks to be the 2nd best but is inexperienced, Cobbs shouldn't be considered a LB, and Tevin Jackson is nowhere to be found after supposedly stealing snaps from Cobbs during camp.

I am really starting to wonder if it is time to experiment with Hicks in the middle. Cobbs at least brings the ability in pass coverage and blitzing. If Edmunds can not contribute on the inside zone than his value is diminished. Perhaps it is just a knee jerk reaction, but I am starting to think that perhaps the best LB unit would be Cobbs, Hicks, and Thompson.

  • Diaz is in over his head. I said the same thing last year, and it looks the same now. His scheme is flawed/a gimmick. Our players are, according to all reports, in the best shape that they have ever been in. Yet, we see a Dline that cant get any consistent pressure, LB's who cant fight over a block or fill the right gap, and DBs who cant tackle and are out of place. Anyone else see how pissed KV got when OSU scored on the play where Diggs dislodged the ball from the wr in the endzone? Guys have no idea where to be. His, for lack of a better word, 'exotic' blitzes dont reach the qb nearly enough and leave us vulnerable to the big play. For instance, anyone else see Byndom get his world rocked multiple times when he blitzed? People are saying its not Diaz's fault and the players (LB's esp.) need to learn to read and react. Who do you think is responsible for teaching them how to read and react?? He's simply not doing his job, or at the very least he is not doing his job well.

    utkaluman597

  • When I see such hyperbolic rants, I always mentally cue up Curly Bill's ". . . . .. well.. . . .bye.. . ." quote.

Not that I don't share some/many of the same fustrations. Clearly this is nowhere near the "best D" or even the "Best DL" in the nation.

Clearly there are issues though I will point out, Blake Gideon helped make this D better, he played like a true S. Yeah, I like stirring the pot sometimes

Not one of your down voters, actually gave you an upvote because even in your hyperbolic rant, you did get it real football.

But I will point out a very OVERLOOKED but very important stat.

While our offense opens conference play 4 for 4 scoring TDs in the end zone, our Defense BOWED UP flex BIGTIME in the end zone holding an explosive OSU to only 2 TDs on 5 trips. Add that to the 2 point conversion stuff and the D accounted for 14 points DENIED to the Cowboys, 17 if Diggs comes up with the INT.

Now that's taking bend but don't break a bit too far but it is not to be denied.
