When they were supposed to be a sure fire top 10 unit? We have two good DE's, one good corner, and one good safety at the moment. A DT flashes here and there.
I've been apologizing for them for the first three games. Understanding that the players being replaced had seen an order of magnitude more football than their replacements. The inability to line up, make the routine tackle, avoid complete coverage lapses and busts or do more to frustrate a QB making his first college start is more than irksome.
We gave up yardage and points last year, but were excellent in almost every adjusted stat column after facing some truly loaded offenses. I think we'll be considerably worse in those same stats this year against weaker offensive competition. It's not a fun unit to watch. I have no faith whatsoever in their ability to get off the field against quality competition. the offense, otoh, is building up quite a bit of credibility with as many personnel limitations as the defense.

With a true frosh QB getting his first start of his career?
Look, it's not a sin to let a spread team move the ball on you. It happens. I can deal with that. It is a sin to miss tackles leading to explosive plays and touchdowns. It's a sin to let WR's get behind the secondary on 3rd and 16 from the minus 8 yard line. It is a sin to let one player run the same play to the same side against your team with near impunity for nearly 3 quarters.
We were boned on the kick out of bounds call. It clearly touched the OSU player, and his body language said "I f'ed up!" from the second the ball was redirected to after it went out of bounds. We busted a well placed directional kick coverage, and we shanked a punt. We didn't do our defense a lot of favors, but they couldn't stop a wet fart this evening. That wasn't Brandon Weeden and Blackmon torching our defense.
I'll say this, outside of AP's two egregious whiffs, our tackling was considerably better though our ability to get off blocks was suspect and we were out of position time and time again.

You are mistaken if you think the offenses Texas faces this year aren't as good as last year.
OSU is averaging more yards and points than last year. Baylor is just as good as last year with Griffin. WVU and TCU replacing Missouri and aggy from last year are trade ups. Tech is Tech. KSU is about the same. ISU is about the same. KU sucks. OU is the only team I would agree with you on being worse than last year.
I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

So everyone thought Diaz was the next defensive genius last year & now he is a moron. Harsin was an idiot last year that was barely a step above our last idiot & now he is a borderline genius. Which is it? Do the Jimmy's & Joe's mean more than the "x" & "o's"?

Every team WVU included will continue to gash us if our LB's crash the gap on every snap and immediately take themselves out of the play. Santo's and Edmonds do a decent job of tackling when they haven't run themselves out of the play which is usually almost every down. Unfortunately most of our defense has zero confidence in themselves right now.

The biggest issue I see is 3rd down. This unit just seems allergic to 3 and outs. I would love to know Texas's stats on 3rd down. Just an amazing amount of 3rd and longs given up. The secondary is should be good enough to win these battles, but they want to make me relive that 3rd and 18 from the OU game over and over. It was fixed after RRS last yr. I am just praying it happens this week, because that will make a huge difference

BIGTIME in the end zone holding an explosive OSU to only 2 TDs on 5 trips. Add that to the 2 point conversion stuff and the D accounted for 14 points DENIED to the Cowboys, 17 if Diggs comes up with the INT.
I'm Done With This Defense....
