Last I remember, MIT was #1; Cal Tech, Michigan, Cal Berkeley, Stanford and Georgia Tech were all up there too.

Rice has a great bioengineering program... but just like Duke (only known for BME), the overall engineering program is not top notch.
but this is because of research funding, not because of the quality of faculty. all of the Rice engineers (mechanical, chemical, electrical) I know are very, very good. they focus on teaching quite a bit.
unfortunately, R1 institutions like UT, or even MIT, berkeley, etc... a lot of the professors actually pretty much suck for teaching because all they care about is getting the next grant. I can say that most of the engineering profs I had at UT were truly horrible teachers. I'm not hating on them because I made bad grades or anything... and I actually enjoyed talking to these profs outside of the classroom setting, and they are great people. A lot of them just really stink at teaching because it's really not their focus. and of course, their teaching isn't what gets them to be the top 10 program in the country.....

btw, this is awesome for UT.
but i don't think we're going up from 10 to 6 because nanotech centers are becoming the norm for top research schools. we're just keeping up with the joneses...

Not that I would want to ever live in Georgia or anything....
but apparently the way that the state of Georgia has tried to "keep their talents in-state" is to waive tuition for students graduating in the top (?)% of their class. I work with a guy who grew up in Georgia and went to GTech for free.
that is a GREAT free education for in-state residents.
