If Davis is gone, what is next?

    that's a dumb reason

Yeah, DKR, Mack Brown, I can see why you'd think that. moon

    Stuck in Mexas

  • First of all, when Malzahn was hired at Arkansas, Frank Broyles was quoted in the Arkansas Democrat as saying his offense wouldn't work in the SEC. Of course, that has proven not to be true.

As stated above, the thing that really impresses me about Malzahn is his ability to adapt. In his only year at Arkansas, the quarterback depth chart consisted of sophomore Casey Dick and true freshman Mitch Mustain. After Mustain had a bad outing against South Carolina, Malzahn did away with the QB position and installed the wildcat formation so he could the ball in the hands of his best player, Darren McFadden. A move that nearly won McFadden a Heisman trophy and carried Arkansas to a 10 win season.

After a disagreement between Malzahn and Houston Nutt, he left the next year for Tulsa. He stayed at Tulsa for two years, and his offense was ranked number 1 in the nation for both of those years.

When Gene Chizik took the Auburn job, he hired Malzahn as his OC. In his first year, he took an Auburn offense that was horrific the year before, at least as bad Texas' offense this year, and molded them into one of the top 20 offenses in the country. In the process, he made Chris Todd into a serviceable QB. The year before, Todd had a year similar to what Gilbert had this year. Of course, this year speaks for itself.

Another note on Malzahn, his previous 4 quarterbacks before Newton combined for 125 touchdown passes, and that is only having one year to work with each QB.

  • I think everyone is barking up the wrong tree. The rumor is that it will be a "big splash" name. I'm sorry but a couple of college OC's with less than a half a dozen years experience each and zero national title belts doesn't exactly yell CANNONBALL to me.

Sooooo... if you want to run Pro Style why wouldn't you look for someone with pro experience? The new OC will come from the NFL or will have been in the NFL. That's my guess.

That's not the most critical of thinking.

  • If Malzahn is hired, I hope we go full court press for Manziel. Seems like he fits that kind of offense pretty well.

Well the idea came from Geoff Ketchum (he proposed the idea on his radio show today), so go easy on papa horn.

  • I'm not sure why it's being passed off as a bad idea. We got a pretty good DC that had NFL experience, who is also set up to be our next HC.

  • True, but he cut his teeth under Saban at LSU and won a title. We had a not so good DC with NFL experience here as well as a solid DC from the NFL who's about to be run out of Ann Arbor.

I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.

I would think more in terms of college game and how it impacts recruiting in terms of said "splash" hires.

One thing about Coach Brown that has been proven out many times, recruiting is the key.

GG set state records and he has much better measureables than Manziel.

that's worked out really well so far

  • Muschamp should also have some input. A good OC candidate knows that Mack will retire in the near future. No serious candidate wants to be knocked off just because a new HC will want his own staff.
Muschamp being the next HC would make a good candidate more comfortable if Will were involved.

  • There are a ton of great candidates out there but Im all about Malzan. Anybody remember the 3-2 game between Auburn and Miss St the year before? the guy brings balance, creativity and he gets the job with whatever players he has at his command.

  • The question is are you hiring for longevity or for a turn around. Most any guy who comes in and turns this around gets a head coaching offer the following year at 2-3 schools.

Malzahn helped an anemic Auburn offense become decent two years ago, but Cam Newton has made their team what it is today - not Malzahn.
Hogerson is up and coming and will get head coaching offers within a couple of years at Texas.
Major has been an OC a couple of times, but little is really know about his ability to develop talent. Would love him as QBs and let the OC take another position on - like RB or WR - probably not OL - too much for 1 person to handle.
Chow really excelled at BYU, did okay at NC State, had the best players at USC, but has dropped off with UCLA - except against Texas this year. His problem is he in not very personable - does not interview or recruit well.

Love the idea of the Wisc OL coach coming here.

Full press indeed since Manziel is scheduled to enroll at collie station in the spring...also Manziel is actively recruiting people to join him in aggieland from the 2012 class.

Texas will have missed out on Drew Brees and Johnny Manziel because of inept evaluation.
